Getting a little off topic from Alex's recent tantrum, I saw an interesting video on pre-made assets in videogames and I'm also wondering about the 150k kickstarter coming up.

The video is titled The Asset Flip (The Jimquisition) and he had some interesting things to say that coincide with Alex's methods of "development". Here are some quotes that stood out to me:

  • Games that use unity or unreal starter kits and asset packs to make an incoherent mess of a game, laden with engine inherent bugs that haven't been fixed because the "studios" behind these products don't seem to know how to actually code anything. (Spot on for Alex)
  • Some of these games boast proudly to be the work of just one person, but its not much of a boast because you dispensed with the need for programmers, designers, artists, and composers because you bought everything for resale (or in Alex's case, used "volunteers" to do everything for you that you didn't purchase.)
  • These developers have found ways to be even lazier. They've done the videogame equivalent of flipping a house. They buy assets, rename them, and then try to sell them to you. As scummy and hacky as this practice is, its not against unity's very lax terms and conditions, anybody can do this - you can do this yourself if you wanted - you know, if you're a fucking turd. I'll call it what it is, it's exploitation, its abuse of the system, its shameless hackery, and its quite frankly utterly pathetic.
  • To have such little artistic merit, to have such little pride in oneself as a game developer and to have such little scruples as to surrender to the temptation of asset flipping is just truly, truly, utterly... pathetic. What these fuckers are creating is 'product', the most cynical cold-hearted product, that you could ever hope to see.
Of course he states that depending on the situation, ability to buy assets for creation of your game is very helpful, but it is important to note that we are being sold and asked to fund a product that was in many ways not created by the developer who is reaping the immense profits and asking an outrageous sum for the kickstarter. Pre-made assets are great for smaller productions, But to have your main character be bought straight from an online asset store, as well as seemingly all significant works within the game, and you are asking for 150,000 dollars to kickstart that game... what on earth..?

And no, marketing is not an excuse. Marketing is expensive, yes, but he has that 200% covered thanks to youtubers playing his game and his own highly successful channel. No money needs to go towards porting, as of now it is a PC exclusive unless he makes MORE than 150k... I'm very curious as to what this 150,000+ is supposedly going towards.

I'm very curious as to what this 150,000+ is supposedly going towards.

It was supposed to be going towards a veteran programmer (no longer needed), and to replace all the placeholders in the game(which according to YandereDev is everything in the game mess).

I actually looked into his reason for spending all this effort on his meme game he mentioned it on his roadmap from 1 year ago (archive):

YandereDev said:
January 1st, 2017: Have all core game mechanics implemented. Have 1 rival fully implemented.

January 2017 ~ April 2017: Refine the gameplay as much as possible, fix all critical bugs, achieve 60 FPS, officially evolve from "debug sandbox" to "playable demo" that represents the final game.

April 2nd, 2017: Launch Kickstarter, ask for enough money to hire professionals to develop professional-quality assets for Yandere Simulator. Stretch Goal: Raise enough money to hire at least one programmer who is far more experienced and skilled than I am.

April 2017 ~ April 2018: Implement all rival girls. (Hopefully, each girl will only take about 1 month to implement.)

April 2018 ~ January 2019: Implement all other gameplay modes (1980s Mode, Endless Mode, Custom Mode).

January 2019 ~ April 2019: Fix bugs, refine the game as much as possible.

April 2019: Launch the game.

The answer to your question is "ask for enough money to hire professionals to develop professional-quality assets for Yandere Simulator" and "raise enough money to hire at least one programmer who is far more experienced and skilled than I am" but I don't think this applies since tinyBuild's programmer is helping him out.

He always says he'll launch the Kickstarter on April 2nd 20XX, at this point even Osana being implemented is a meme in the YS community, I guess if we draw attention to his Kickstarter claims each year it'd also become a meme (e.g. "I'll make the website when YandereDev launches his Kickstarter campaign", "I'll start streaming when Yandere Simulator isn't a meme game", etc.)

Almost 30 years old. I wonder how his parents feel when they hear that.

That was hilarious though, nice dash Alex.

The parents probably didn't hear it. They most likely soundproofed the basement ages ago and threw the key away.

I actually looked into his reason for spending all this effort on his meme game he mentioned it on his roadmap from 1 year ago (archive):

That roadmap is hilarious in retrospect. When you look at things that were supposed to be done by now: Osana is still not done, 60fps is still not achieved, Kickstarter is still not launched, and don't even bother mentioning the next five rivals.

Maybe Alex writes digits the other way around and the game will launch in April 9102.

I'd be fine with his roadmap being wrong (it's his first big project, he was the only programmer for a while, etc) if it wasn't entirely his own fault.

He refused repeated offers for help with the code--both writing and porting it over. He cuts himself off from professional resources by refusing contracts and guaranteed pay. He insists on wasting time interacting on social media, instead of working with his volunteers and getting a secretary or PR representative. He previously wouldn't allow volunteers to interact, which has caused serious issues with the visual style of the game. He half-asses any research and ignores important details that could easily be solved. He wastes time presenting ideas repeatedly and arguing with people over what fits his vision. He spends so much of his time playing games and trying to sort through cool elements to add that nothing feels streamlined or coherent. He openly admits that he avoided working on the game the moment it began to take too long or became 'unfun' regardless of the fact that he is being paid to do so. Just....UGH.

Happy halloween everybody heres Alex's twitch schedule for september

He insists on wasting time interacting on social media, instead of working with his volunteers and getting a secretary or PR representative.

I asked him this once and his response was:

"It's not a "waste" of time to talk to fans. It's important to address their concerns, to acknowledge criticism, to provide answers to important questions, etc. I really only spend 15 minutes per day answering questions on Reddit, anyway."

Taking his September stream time into account, he (streamed) playing games for a total of 84 hours, 15 minutes and 12 seconds. Averaging 2 hours and 48 minutes a day.
Assuming he sleeps 8 hours a night, there's 13 hours and 12 minutes he can use to work. Let's take the "15 minutes answering Reddit questions" out of the 12 to make an even 13 hours. Seeing how he's still alive, let's give him 3-5 hours a day to eat/shower/jerk off etc.

This means, he's had about 8-10 hours a day to work on Yandere Simulator throughout September, and all that was updated was implementing a bugged headmaster and partnering with Crush Crush. Since nothing was stated, we're assuming no progress has been done for Osana.

I wonder when the breaking point for his fans will hit. Getting 5~10k a month is getting the game no where, and he's asking for 150k more.

This game is digging itself into it's own grave, and I'm afraid it will be stuck in purgatory as long as Alex's breathes.

Holy shit, this with the cuphead meltdown... I think he's actually starting to lose his mind.

This has been going on for a while. He'll always rages when it doesn't go his way. Even if it's something minor. Persona 5 was full of it. Taming monster in Persona 5 ? Fuck them, too difficult to think from the monster's perspective. And of course, no such thing will be in YandereSim because this is stupid.

He's a mini DSP into making. Let's not forget he's one of the worst let's player,

He also needs to be entered as world's slowest talking game developer. Where in the world did he learn to speak like that

I actually thought he spoke like that on purpose for extra creep factor in his yandere dev videos when I first saw them, but no it's genuine and his regular voice. A happy accident I guess.

And I just noticed he didn't stream on the 15 and the 30th and this is because he is making and uploading his youtube videos right?
