That logic is prevalent among artists. The argument goes that if you can't draw purely from muscle memory, it's not your drawing. At best it's held in the same regard as training wheels and at worst it's considered synonymous to tracing. I would be surprised that using mathematics to measure everything isn't held in the same regard, but no one has done that since the ancient Greeks.

Of course references are cheating; after all, the one thing that professional artists (ie concept artists in the field I'm assuming he wants to get into) definitely don't say is how important reference images are, because you can't always trust your mind when trying to come up with an original concept. Nope. They came up with everything ever straight from their heads and didn't get references for proportional accuracies or anything like that.
