Megathread Non-binary genders / Enbies - When Male and Female Aren't Special Enough

Intersex people have had real and unnecessary harm done to them against their consent--and these are the same surgeries trans people willingly inflict upon themselves.

This is a false dichotomy. Adults, because they are adults, should be able to inflict whatever plastic surgery they want on themselves (although personally I am strongly against bottom surgery just because the results are never anywhere close to what they're supposed to resemble). It's when little children are forced or coerced into unnecessary surgery or life-altering decisions about gender that it gets truly fucked up.

trenders try to take labels from other LGBT subcultures without being part of those subcultures?

People really identify as an “e-male”? I honestly can’t tell the diffrence between gender special satire and legit crazy person anymore.

Also I don't get this appropriating culture thing, nobody owns culture.

Is that like a reverse albino or something? Instead of a genetic quirk that doesn't produce sufficient melanin, a genetic quirk that overproduces it?

You mean melanism? It happens, but not in humans. Humans are capable of unusually high melanin production, and specified melanism that effects single parts, but not generalized melanism like big cats and squirrels. It's also a herditary recessive allele.

Saying "black dude with no black ancestry" is kind of like saying you have a cat with no feline ancestry. It's not really possible, unless you're one of those people who gets surgery to change your skin color.

Maybe she's a lesbian in denial?

Although I think you might be right about her being a trans man though since she looks like she's wearing a binder.

Either a trans man or she's wearing a sports bra. Tbh whenever I see people in binders that don't even attempt to pass it kinda pisses me off for a whole variety of reasons, biggest one being if you don't even want to appear male or transition to anything that would require surgery for a flat chest, then why would you bother with one?

I thought it was stupider. Like "black" meaning "of African descent" talking about Australian aboriginals.

Here, have some gender fluids.

Probably :late: but on the topic of intersex people, there's a rather famous case with two twin boys where one of them had his penis damaged quite severely in a botched circumcision. A psychologist known for studying intersex people and for sexual development and gender identity used this case to test his theory that gender identity is mostly because of how you are raised - so he gave the boy a sexual reassignment surgery (the kid and his twin brother were just under 2 years old) and had him raised as a girl, and the two were studied to see the effect.
It didn't end well, of course. He had depression and suicidal thoughts at age 13. When he was 15 his parents told him the truth about his sex, he started living as male again, underwent reassignment to be more male (similar to ftm reassignment) at age 22, got married -- and then killed himself at age 38. His twin brother had killed himself two years prior to that. His entire life was miserable.

So, even though he wasn't born intersex, he's a good example of how private, serious, and tragic the intersex condition can be, and how people on tumblr romanticize and glorify it.

His name is David Reimer, if you want to do some research yourself.

Most of us who discuss transgender topics on the boards are very familiar with David Reimer and Dr. John Money.

Boy, are we ever.

His psychologist also molested the twins, however, so a lot of his trauma also stemmed from childhood sexual abuse and not only from having a fucked up gender identity alone. His case can't really be used to discredit gender identity =/= nurture for those reasons.

Maybe they’re autistic and have trouble realising what they look like? (Surprisingly some reasearch shows FtM identified people are more likely to have autistic traits than even their MtF counterparts - http://healthland.time.com/2011/05/...people-have-higher-levels-of-autistic-traits/)

Kind of like with male autistic tucutes where they put on female clothes and grow their hair long but don’t bother shaving their 12 o’clock stubble.

See, when I look at some alleged “enbies”, I think their psychological problems have nothing to do with dysphoria. It’s more often a manifestation of a mood, personality, eating disorder, or something else that’s affecting their perception. They’re disoriented from who they are and can’t forage their identities for themselves, this could be likely for a multitude of reasons.

A little powerleveling, but for me at least, I was forced to grow up in a household with an extremely traditionalist, overbearing mother who forced the idea of femininity down my throat from a young age, so by the time I reached adolescence, I started to loathe the idea of being “female”, and eventually began identifying with an “enbie” gender, before just realizing that I was a casual tomboy. My mental health being unstable for that period of my life did contribute to my reinforcement of this impostrous self I’d crafted. I did eventually just discover that I’m not a girly girl, and that mentally, I needed a few adjustments, better medication, proper disgnosis, better coping mechanisms. In that time I also came to the conclusion that I was just straight up bisexual, feelings that I’d kinda been shouldering for awhile with the insistence that I was a special snowflake. The wrong form of false discovery led to the right form of self discovery, I guess?

Another example I can think of is Sara Marie “Jude” Karda, she’s an alleged “enbie”, but from what I can tell she seems like she has body dsymorphia, not gender dysphoria, as a result of what seems to be an unspecified eating disorder. Her body is unrealistically thin, and she wants to remain that thin so badly that she basically mistook it for “gender dysphoria” and started claiming “enbie” despite her being comfortable with the female gender beforehand. She even underwent mastectomy, and somehow got on T (she’s canadian, guess given that the docs are irresponsible there). I think this isn’t about her “gender” at all, it’s her discomfort with the size of her body, not her genitals. I do feel like she’s not doing herself any favors by altering her hormones or chopping off her breasts, she doesn’t seem very happy either way. I think this girl needs to find out for herself, but she has a large following of teenage girls as an Instagram “model”, and that in itself makes her influence worrisome.

So to chalk it up, a lot of kids mistake “having a mental illness that affects your perceptive sense” for “I’m trans”, when they’re not trans, not even close. Dsymorphia and dysphoria are two different things, they’re both cognitive but they’re completely different psychologically. A lot of things can ultimately impact the brain to mistakenly identify things, so in some cases I can’t say I fully blame these enbie kids for using it as a coping mechanism for say, bpd or bipolar disorder if they have it, but their toxicity is not helping, moreover probably worsening their symptoms. Whereas if they learned how to properly express their identities without stomping on legitimate lgbt people, they’d probably feel better.
