The Final Fantasy Thread

First of all, you are NOT in the minority when it comes to hating 13, dude. Have you even read the thread?

As for your question, it all comes down to personal opinions. I know, cliche response is cliche. But I, for one, enjoy the mythos of 13 and find myself getting invested in the characters, so I can go along with the stories, plot holes and all. However, from what I can tell, you'll probably hate the sequels too. So yeah, stay away from them.
How is it gameplay-wise? I played the demo of XIII-2 and the impression I got was that it has an identity crisis where it can't decide if it's Final Fantasy or God of War.

Again, it all depends on your personal preferences. There are some QTEs before and after boss fights, but they're nowhere near God of War level. So if that's what you're concerned about, don't be. How far did the demo take you?

It's been a while but it went from introducing Serah and the new kid to that golem type monster. I think.

I actually found XIII-2 quite enjoyable, mostly due to the monster recruitment and fusion systems. It was very fun to do. The DLC Recruits are really cool, and include things like Gilgamesh from FFV and Ultros + Typhon from FFVI

Ah, alright. One new thing that's annoying is called wounding - you basically take permanent damage that can only be healed with wound potions. There are also these extremely tedious puzzles you have to do later on in order to solve certain paradoxes. But other than that, it's not much different from XIII.

Yeah, the monsters as party members was a neat addition. I also though the music was really good.

Big fan of IV, VI and VII, so-so on VIII. My interest started going downhill hard after X and I haven't played any of the more recent games. None of the more recent stories have really grabbed me.

Regarding Cloud as the prototype of the angsty hero: for what it's worth, he wasn't as angsty as people seem to remember. The PC version of FFVII I had gave him lines like "Let's mosey" (eesh) and while he wasn't the brightest bulb in the socket, he wasn't 100% all-self-pity either. His character arc was more about uncovering the disturbing underpinnings of a seemingly straightforward person, and again, we had the unreliable narrator aspect. But Advent Children went out of its way to angstify him for fan expectations and now Cloud is Emo Poster Child #1.

Squall, on the other hand, got on my nerves. There was the orphanage thing and the father thing, but a conversation with Squall at the beginning of the game would sound pretty much identical to a conversation at the end. I pretty much play FFVIII only for the villains. Seifer's obsession with becoming a knight hero (and the way it all goes horribly wrong) makes an interesting storyline, and I always wanted to know more about Fujin and Raijin. By contrast, the heroes were meh.

VI is definitely the best of the classic-era games, though. Each character had their own distinct backstory and, for the first time IMO, you really got the sense that this was a fully-populated world that was really at risk.

Also ... Gogo's Theme. Always makes me smile.

My favourite Final Fantasy game is VI. I honestly would have liked a sequel to it, because it would have been interesting to see how the world would have fared without magic and such, but looking at what Squeenix is doing these days...I am just glad the game recieved a better translation for the phones.

I disagree. I think Final Fantasy 6 ended very well and that the epilogue of all the characters having to rebuild the world of ruin without magic just isn't as interesting as the story of Kefka's rise and fall.

Plus magic is such a key component to every single Final Fantasy game, I can't really see a game without it.

The devs of 7 later stated in interviews that the reason why they portrayed Cloud as more angsty in Advent Children was because of how popular the character was in Japanese magazines. And there they portrayed him as the archetypal emo poster boy, so they just followed what was popular.

It really shows you where their priorities were. Especially when the movie only focused on Cloud, Tifa and a few others. And the rest of the arguably more interesting cast was given the shaft and only had maybe 5 minutes of screen time.

I remember playing a demo of FFVIII long ago as a kid. Not a big fan of the series but I loved playing the Tactics Advanced games and I would love to give the other games a try.

Have you heard of the Saga series? I was thinking something similar to that in terms of plot and gameplay (Questing around, that is). However, I do agree that Kefka cannot be topped and it would be really strange seeing a RPG without magic (As interesting as that sounds).

Strange, but it could be interesting, but it has to be pulled off correctly... maybe some other system to replace magic which could honestly go either way or you can always have fun with technology.

Actually... I shouldn't even be replying as I've haven't yet played FFVI... just merely watched my older cousin play it sometimes.

Eorzea Cafe in Tokyo, Japan. I don't usually drink, but would like to taste the White Mage drink.

Eorzea cafe I think also has a sister restaurant called Luida's Bar which is Dragon Quest themed. The menus are in a similar style and they have a bunch of replicas on display and cute food shaped like the monsters and creatures of those games too.

I've played most of the Final Fantasies, albeit the online titles and a few of the sequels. X is one of my favorites, if not my favorite, though I loved VI and VII as well. VIII gets a lot of undeserved hatred. Really, all of them are great imo.

Save for V. Well...I enjoyed V, too.

VII got a lot of sequels but I always wanted to see an After Years of VI. Hell, VIII could have done with an action RPG or two as a sequel, or a total remake. A lot of people loathed the Junction system. I think it was a nice change of pace. Not always ideal, but with a little dedication and card playing, you could max out your characters fairly early on without much leveling.

My favourite pre-PS1 FF game is IV, followed by V.
I like all the installments that were on the PS1 and PS2 to varying degress. My top three are X, VII, and XII but the order changes from day-to-day. Whilst I have all three XIII games, I haven't finished the first one yet, so I don't really have an opinion on them yet.

Spinoffs? Tactics, and the two Tactics Advanced games are my favourites. Ivalice is by far my favourite FF setting, but that's probably because I enjoy following politics and reading Shakespeare.

The trailers for XV look interesting, but I really, really wish Squenix would stop trying to shoehorn JRPGs into what they imagine Western audiences like.

I wonder if this one is permanent or just a limited time event.

I don't know but if the Dragon Quest counterpart is any indication, if it is successful, it's probably there to stay. After all, Luida's Bar was originally built for DQIX, but because of the ongoing releases of games, it was a good reason to have it stay open if the restaurant was popular initially. At least that is from my understanding.

Finally finished VIII today; I've been wanting to see Disc 4 since I first rented it from a video store back in the day (lol). Still my favorite, kinda sad that it gets so much hate :(

Honestly I really love the old early 3D from the PSX pre-rendered games. I remember reading that they tried making VIII more "European" with their capacity for new graphics (e.g. Squall's feathery hood, everyone's textured hair/clothes). They did a much better job than this current art style in XIII and the extended VII stuff...it's like they forgot how to draw white people after VIII/Tactics. Snow's weird nose bridge and emaciated twink Cloud just aren't doing it for me :/

I'm actually enjoying XIII's story/mythos but the gameplay is killing me. I'm terrible at video games, I need the option to grind it out if I'm stuck. I got sick of reconfiguring all my Paradigms every time I switched a party member and after they said "ok lol have the whole sphere grid" I just put it down. And how many times are we going to flash back to the same "omg Serah's a L'Cie everyone frown" filler scene?

Yeah, having to constantly recreate your paradigms sucks. That and the whole "if your party leader gets KO'd it's game over" are my biggest complaints about the gameplay.
