This is one of the reasons why I have nothing but unbridled disdain for Macleans magazine and will rejoice when it goes belly up. If diversity is really the key to the future success of the industry, then why has it not been working for Marvel these past four years? Could it be the heavy-handed political messages? The atrocious writing and art?
What I find interesting is that article fails to mention DC Comics and its success it has had with
Rebirth. DC is not exactly hurting for diversity right now.
Green Lanterns stars a Hispanic-American woman and an Arab-American man. Mr. Terrific, a black super genius, is headlining
The Terrifics. Ryan Choi is the Atom again. However, their success has nothing to do with their status as minorities. It has everything to do with the quality of the stories. They key here is that DC is respecting is history. Beloved characters like Ray Palmer and Ted Kord are around, but in a respectful way that stays to the legacy theme as mentors to their successors.
Additionally, DC creators have been nothing but courteous to their customers while Marvel's have shown nothing but seething contempt for them. I will gladly spend money the works of Ethan Van Sciver, Patch Zircher, and Sean Gordon Murphy because they WANT my business and act like professionals, not a clique of self-important pricks like the Marvel Bullpen.
Seriously--fuck Macleans. They are part of the reason why the mainstream media in Canada is some a pathetic joke.
