Agreed. I'm already working on saving up for the holidays, and the best motivation I have to resist the temptation to prematurely spend any of it is to think the words "Don't Be Chris!". Works every time.

I'm just watching and enjoying my funds increase with my job until November when my student loans go into repayment.

He was met with massive resistance from both poverty groups because they saw it as a slippery slope when the government decides what they can and can't buy their their stamps, and surprise surprise a beverage lobbyist who wanted to keep the government money sliding into their profit margins.

This one always drove me crazy. Laws wouldn't regulate what adults can and can not eat; Laws would regulate what adults whose existence depends on the state can buy with their ration money. Some of the stuff in that article is vile and should not be on any diet.

What stuff is that?

Cheese Whiz poured over Cheetos...
Just added another page to my recipe book. (Well, not entirely, I'd have to think about it a bit and decide what kind of cheese sauce and what kind of cheetos to use, but basically, yeah. *yawn*. (Though I still can't eat solid food yet :( ))

Hey, if that's the best they can afford with their SNAP, then go with it. Despite that Fox News horseshit claiming that people on Food Stamps are buying lobster every day, you don't get that much in SNAP funds to make it through the month.

There's a similar problem in the UK, where it's possible to be working full time and yet still not afford to be able to feed your family adequately. It sucks balls, because the government's unwillingness to help the poor eat well winds up impacting on the National Health Service when these people wind up getting sick. Sorry, little off-topic rant there. I work for the NHS.

I let one of my personal IRL lolcows live with my wife and I a few times for a few months at a time. He didn't have a job just food stamps so that's what he paid rent with. For three adults it doesn't go super far. Thankfully we're both employed so its not like we were relying on his EBT. On the other hand though you can buy some stupid shit with it. I can totally see not managing it properly and just having mountain dew and pizza rolls to live off of for a month or so.

I'd worry about thread derailment, but I think this particular thread is hitting its natural end anyway. Yeah, EBT is usable for some really stupid shit. Energy drinks are a new one on me. If you need a buzz, coffee is arguably less bad for you and certainly more cost-effective.

The argument you'll hear is that the gubmint shouldn't be able to tell me what I can and can't buy. To which, I'd point out, the government isn't telling you what you can't buy, they're telling you what THEY are unwilling to buy with THEIR money*. Anytime you give someone money, you can specify it's to be used for x, y, or z. It's your money to give, and if the person taking it doesn't accept your terms, they have the choice not to take it. If you're taking government money for food and necessities, it's unfair to complain that they expect you to use it for food and necessities.

I'll also throw out that I think my definition of "food and necessities" is pretty damned broad.

*Yes, in a roundabout way, it's actually our money as taxpayers, but since the state is cutting the check I'll describe it this way.

It is a more complicated issue. Almost all EBT recipients receive actual money as well from other sources. If you try to restrict what they can buy too much, it is easy for them to substitute their payments between EBT and money. There is also a large secondary market for EBT, either the benefits themselves or just shit bought with it. Government micromanaging of benefits isn't going to be particularly effective.

In my opinion, if you give people money or goods, they are going to find ways of using a lot of it for things they want (services don't really have the same problem as they are not transferable). It might be frustrating but it is going to happen.

If they can sell EBT for real money, then I don't care about regulations on what they can spend it on. But if it's too difficult to turn it into real money, then a lot of regulations on what they can spend it on are going to be a real dick move.

we're getting to the point where this discussion should probably be split to the welfare thread, but i'll just say that both bacon and sugar will fuck your heart up and make you obese and nobody cares if you buy those with food stamps.

Guys, why are we discussing EBT?

This thread is getting boring and I want to go back to saying how we're all better than Chris. (:_( :alog:(:_(
