Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

So when is the last time any of the comic publisher employees actually discussed comics? I'm really having a hard time finding anything even as banal as "this month's X-Men was good"
In all honesty, the comic book creators that come the closest to doing this are typically the big hitters in the industry like Tom King, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, and even terrible businessmen highly criticized guys like Joe Quesada and Brian Michael Bendis - presumably because they have actual work and deadlines they have to meet so their Twitter feeds are mostly sharing updates, articles, and WIPs from their current projects while occasionally responding to fans who are sharing fan-art or books made by their colleagues.

Of course when you dig hard enough you can find political sperging and such, Lord knows Bendis has a hard-on for his diverse Mary Sues, but it's harder to find comparatively. Then there's also outliers like Christopher Priest or Baba Tarr of nuBatgirl fame who don't even seem to have social media outside of Babs having a Tumblr that is used exclusively as a portfolio. Hell, after scanning through several twitters, I'd even argue that CG spergs are a minority even among the extremely liberal end of comics since, with the exception of the occasional Trump/politics comments, the ones who have a modicum of talent seem like they care more about getting their name out there over worrying about people on Twitter.

Incidentally, outside of CG sperging I've noticed people like Tess Fowler and Pia Guerra spend the rest of their time gushing about non-comic media like TV shows and podcasts than they do even promoting comics their friends made - if they ever do it all. I've found more retweets of people's Patreon plugs than I've seen comics from friends or colleagues. I guess the comic industry is only a tight-knit family to the extent that everyone else is supposed to lift their fatasses up.

Yeah I meant the CG related employees. Seems like they don't really have work to show off, or even like comics at all.

Reminds me of those punk bands in the 80's who pretended they hated punk.

I'm still curious those nightly Google Hangouts Tamra mentioned. Could be nonsense but no one really mentions it.

It seems Marvel finally did it, they canned Jon Malin because of his politics. This is not a guess, he's a very good artist and most of the stuff he's worked on has sold pretty well (unbelievably well by [current] Marvel standards).

His contract with Marvel was do for renewal and rumor is Marvel isn't renewing with him because of his political stance.

Just in case you're skeptical of whether or not Malin was let go because of his politics let me show you his art work:

He's too good of an artist to work at current day Marvel anyway. Quality art isn't what they're after any more. Only surface traits.

Besides the indie companies, there's thankfully a lot of money in crowdfunding for comics and other art projects.

JCF, this guy will be writing Captain America:

I don't remember if I posted this before here, but while I was making the Kieran Thread, I kept being reminded about this video:

He gets so close there at the end to a realization about the professional world. Then his brain went and imploded.

You think for one second that any editor will want to work with someone who is toxic?

Oh honey - it's clear you know jack shit about the comics industry outside your little bubble. Go look up Jim Shooter vs. John Byrne, Rob Liefeld vs. Image Comics, Stan Lee vs. Steve Ditko...

The comics industry isn't about getting to work with people you like. It's being forced to work with someone because their art/writing sells a fuck ton of books. This continues until someone quits due to animosity, or sales dip low enough that the company shuffles people around to put fresh blood on the book to boost lagging sales.

The comics industry isn't the land of rainbows and lollipops you think it is, sister.

A lot of us lived through the 90's implosion....we know that "diversity" didn't make that happen.

So did I sweetie. While diversity wasn't the main cause - that was the fault of gimmick covers, a flood of #1 issues, constantly late books, and terrible art and writing - it didn't help either. Go check out DC's "Bloodlines" and Marvel's 1993 Annuals - they introduced a fuckton of new characters of various diversities, and 99% of them sucked so bad, they were either sent to Comic Book Limbo or killed off in Infinite Crisis and Civil War. Diversity means fuck-all if the characters suck donkey dick.

This echoes your situation, because a lot of the hacks in comics now are essentially those "new characters". Brought on as a gimmick in order to lure in new readers, but in the end, you've brought nothing fresh, exciting, or innovative to the table. So now you're all slowly getting "killed off" and condemned to Comic Book Limbo. See Gabby Rivera + "America", Chelsea Cain + "Mockingbird", Ta-Nehisi Coates + "Black Panther and the Crew", Aubrey Sitterson + "Scarlett's Strike Force"....

Like @E. Knee as Weapon - Cont. said, it sounds kinda amateurish, but I think they're taking exception to the mission statement focusing once more on selling comics, this pretty much means that things that don't sell are gonna get cancelled quickly, guess who's writing the shit books that remains unsold?
