As someone who has studied history and maintained an interest in alternate history until recently, Black Panther bothered me on some level because I could not suspend my disbelief. The video addresses many of my issues with the concept of Wakanda being a isolated technological wonderland because, "vibranium." The premise of the film falls apart when one tries to engage it on a level deeper than a popcorn film. I mean, how advanced of a society can they truly be if they choose their king through ritual combat? Bob does not have any appreciation of history nor does he possess rudimentary understanding of the cultures of the continent. I recall reading on another forum how native Africans have a low opinion of African-Americans, whom they see as arrogant and appropriating tribal colours and garments without any understanding of their significance.
I may be one of those "white devils" Killmonger hates, Black Panther comes off as an "ugly american" parody of African culture to me. At least The Lion King treated it with reverence and I would argue is more culturally significant than Black Panther.
