ReetardERA has a warped worldview where everything is simply black or white. There's no middle ground, there's no nuance, you're either good or you're evil. Liberals = good, conservatives = evil. People who vote liberal = good, people who vote conservative = evil. Individual circumstances don't matter so if a person voted for Trump simply out of fear of losing their job while being the primary income-getter for their family they get thrown in the exact same pile as everyone else. And all of it is only encouraged by the dipshit moderators, who gleefully ban anyone for not towing the party line immediately. Specific individuals (cough, Excel Spreadsheet, cough) even go out of their way to try and bait other users into admitting their non-liberal opinions because the thought of having to interact with someone holding a dissenting opinion completely terrifies them.

What this all leads to is a harmful universal "us good = them evil" mentality that goes unchallenged because the site is an echo chamber and ultimately leads to severe delusions and paranoia where ERA users unironically believe that half of America is evil and hates them and wants them to die just because they don't have a penis or aren't white.

At this point they're no better than gangstalkers.

This is a person who lives in constant fear that their neighbor or someone standing in line at the grocery store with them might have voted for Trump. There is absolutely no way in hell they could hold a real job. It's obvious daddy is the only thing keeping her from living in a cardboard box.

As much as ReetardERA refuses to accept it the bottom line is that the amount of people who buy movies/games/books/whatever solely based on the main character's race/gender/sexual orientation is microscopic. The vast majority of consumers simply does not give a solitary fuck what the main character is when choosing their products. Videogames aren't Hollywood and voice actors can't sell a product singlehandedly. While people will pay money to watch Sam Jackson play a badass, no one is forking over money because Troy Baker is the lead character unless they're a family member, friend or stalker.

Then of course there's also the issue of context. The reason straight white men are the default option in games is that you're free to do whatever the fuck you want to them during the course of the game and no one is gonna complain. The same is mostly true for black male characters as well but women are an entirely different story. Just look at the outrage over the reveal trailer for the first game of the Tomb Raider reboot back in 2012 or whenever where people thought it implied Lara was about to get raped (which, it was a woman on a secluded island of evil mercenaries so I'm not entirely sure what they expected). Imagine Uncharted 4 if they swapped Nathan and the black lady's roles so that it was the white dude beating the shit out of the black lady multiple times over the course of the game without any repercussion. I'm sure that would have gone over realllllll well. Anita sperging about there being female hostages in Siege (which had always been a thing in the series but muh narrative) is another good example. As long as people are going to throw fits any time something bad happens to a female character in a game then developers are going to continue to make male ones the default. And you can't really blame them either given the 500 page outrage thread on ERA over a dude touching a woman's ass (and immediately getting knocked the fuck out as a result) in VC4.

As the saying goes, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

True equality would allow for female protagonists to have their arses handed to them just as much as the male ones, but the current climate just doesn't allow for it. I'm sure some people like Vela who keep demanding representation will still be complaining if their diverse protagonists have to go through any hardship. Nobody cares if you mow down a battalion worth of faceless men, but god forbid you harm a single woman.

It wouldn't matter that much if it wasn't the focus of the game and marketing involving "a game with a female black lead". Games with female leads have been around for ages, but you don't see people praising Beyond Good and Evil for having a lead who isn't a white male, but for it's merits as a videogame.

Their issue isn't with representation, because when they get something they want, they will ask for more, and change the next thing about the game until it's not a good game anymore.

And they won't buy it either way, or else progressive games with non-white female leads wouldn't be the last game of a dying company (and I guess Telltale cookie-cutter approach to all projects didn't help either)
