I'm trying to think of a game that fits these qualifications from the last five years, but I'm coming up dry. For the most part the only games that have gotten censored over here are fap games with lolis or first party Nintendo games. I find it hard to believe the people who made something like criminal girls think that pulling the voices out of the groping minigame is somehow better suited to their creative vision, they were making smut from the start.
Yet it's also hard to believe that Nintendo of Japan forced their RPGs to put in bikinis and the other fairly tame sexual content Treehouse got rid of. Tokyo Mirage Sessions was one of their bigger controversies, yet that game was made by Atlus, based on idols, and went out of its way to hire a character designer from pixiv known for cute girls. It would be one thing if the localization had extra scenes or extensive story changes that they may have wanted to do in the first place, but it's hard to see the team feeling great relief that some outfit had to get a half assed edit to show less skin. Especially when you check out the artists and see them constantly posting lewd stuff in their spare time.
I'm inclined to think this is a straight up lie. Which isn't to say that publishers never force more sexual content in, Suda51 has talked about that. But this notion that Japanese devs are chomping at the bit for localization to come along and start making cuts seems absurd.

What producer would say "This game is great, but make it more gross." unless they're working on a horror game? It makes no sense.
That kind of surprises me. I always assumed publishers wanted a lower rating to increase the audience. I'm interested in whatever interview or talk he mentioned that.
And on the subject of translations being closer to the artists original vision. The only games where that might apply are Japanese games that were censored in Japan and uncensored elsewhere. The Evil Within 2 and Resident Evil 7 having more violence in the western release for example. But I've yet to see anyone complain that those games were changed for the west.
