Dwarf Fortress in summary for normies: A top-down overly complex rouge-like, combined with a management sim and no graphics (unless you dl a tileset). You control a colony of dwarves and try not to die too quickly. Deaths are inevitable though and losing is FUN.

An event in my current game:
After getting my fort up to around 170 dwarves, I got too relaxed and didn't seal off EVERY cave entrance, leaving one small area overlooking a cave lake open so my dwarves could fish. Eventually a forgotten beast in the form of a giant, winged snail that shoots webs, took notice and by the time I tried to block off the staircase it was already flying up it and scared off the dwarf hauling stone.
So with my two military squads (one archer based, one melee based) I put them in the hall entrance to the caves to await the beast. It showed up, webbed all my melee troops, archers shot it, lightly injuring it and keeping it at bay for a while, eventually it charged through, slaughtering both squads in a few seconds, this pissed off the rest of the fort which then zerg rushed it. As you can imagine it was a bloodbath.
Finally a lone miner got tired of it all and walked up to the beast and simply lodged a steel pick-axe into its brain, killing it instantly.
