Ever notice how whenever one of the "Game Journalism" outlets inevitably self-destruct (like Joystiq), undergo a mass layoff (Giantbomb), have their parent company crash into a dumpster (like Kotaku), or otherwise implode (like The Escapist), there's always some group or another waiting in the wings to give these people a place to fail at? Austin here has been at like 2 different places, but everyone in whatever the fuck the Game Journo version of the Rat King is has been through several.

I don't understand why when you have a bunch of people whose sole accomplishment is to nosedive every platform they've ever been on and whose opinions are about as popular as Chron's Disease, attached to a market model that is provably hemorrhaging money, you'd just keep doubling down with these assclowns.

Nobody sets out to become a "games journalist." Nobody ever got asked what they wanted to be when they grew up and answered a "games journalist" any more than anyone would have answered "I want to grow up to be a pederast."

It's a position you fail into from being a completely worthless human being.

There's an unproven business meme that SocJus types use to convince corporations to support them. The meme is that by focusing on diversity instead of the core product they can bring in more women and PoCs (Asians count as white), which would outweigh alienating say 10-20% of your existing userbase. I know of no examples where this strategy was implemented successfully, it's almost always resulted in failure. The meme is relatively new, so executives are likely not certain how effective it is.

Personally I think the biggest misconception is with the idea that women and PoCs are not involved because of "toxicity" or "representation", and not because they're legitimately not interested. It did not take special diversity efforts to make Yu-Gi-Oh or DBZ popular among black kids.
