DSP "real criticism" thread

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
He needs to stop being such a massively thin skinned asshole to every new person who pops into his chat. His current business model relies too heavily on people showing up for the first time, and IMMEDIATELY buying into his bs and becoming bloated paypigs. Which is insane, as not enough people watch his content, those who are new often ask questions (which leads to princess Swag banning them), and generally being uninterested in anything people say that doesn't involve mindlessly praising him.

He loses so many potential sources of income because he is incredibly anti-social and paranoid. Phil needs to calm down, not be assmad 24/7, and make it so people who do stumble on his stream, don't immediately decide to leave because you obviously don't give a shit unless your'e in his inner circle of whale paypigs.

Real talk:
You always ask for "real criticism" and you never use it. You still do the same shit when I started this thread.

Not only that, but you also cherrypick a select few posts (only two that I remember from the last time you asked for criticism) and pulled your typical lol shit. When you ask for criticism, you don’t get to just block out the stuff you don’t want to hear. That’s not how criticism actually works.

Take pride in your job Phil and get your passion back. Half ass reading cheers, falling asleep during streams, half ass sub and patreon goals, etc etc. It's your full time job, you wouldn't act like that if you had a boss.
If he actually tried, he might get back his passion for gaming. Patrons choosing cool games to try, sub goals to do fun things (dying hair blue like ninja) etc. It could rrally lift his spirits...if he changed his mindset. I changed my mindset on a few silly things and here i am enjoying life a lot more. He is probably too scared of change

Oh, I almost forgot.

Please, in the name of all things holy, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop using the word, “interactive,” to describe your streams. This is easily the most retarded thing you’ve ever picked up and started using often. You’re stating the obvious, Twitch was designed SPECIFICALLY for streamers to be able to INTERACT with their audience. Interactive is not a synonym for, “you give me money.” You fucking schmuck.

While I 100% agree with these ideas - and pleased you are enjoying life more - I don't think he will be able to get his passion back for gaming... It's too far gone

When was the last game D$P genuinely seemed to enjoy??? Maybe South Park?

He has played games on the same couch for close to 5-6hrs a day for ~10 years (and barely leaves the house). I think it's impossible to stay motivated and passionate for that life choice.

He doesn't achieve anything - and therefore his life has no meaning (in my opinion)

Also he doesn't play games for fun - it is 100% for $$$$.

And he doesn't care what other people think - even berating fans who give him $100s if not thousands of dollars

Finally, with (my) likely conclusion he is a narcissist; it's likely his brain is wired differently than a normal person... So he's not as capable as facing reality. His "spirits" / self esteem is fragile underneath the surface

Part of getting his passion back for gaming is learning to laugh at himself. If a game glitches, dont get mad or depressed, laugh.

Example: "Hahaha look at the glitch, always happens to me haha" and then move on without anger or indignation

To give another perspective on this point here, I do agree with you but have to clarify something for Dave, I hope some can agree.

His little outbursts of rage, indignation, depression and mocking (to his chat) aren't by definition problematic as people do know how to take a joke and can laugh over normal human emotions. It's the way and especially amount which gets annoying. So we go from a harmless "Haha yeah" to "Holy shit this guy is a piece of shit". The longer someone repeats anything, the more it paints a picture of the person who says it, so even if I would give him a slack and say "He's just joking", due to his way of speaking and general history I have big problems detecting the joke.
You hear it in his voice which shows no glimpse of irony, you can hear his wording which is often enough literally "I'm not joking here, I'm serious". Is this supposed to be fun for anyone?

He enabled the 2 standards people hold him too all by himself just by taking him and his "work" waaay too serious and by not knowing when to stop (shitty jokes).

I'll give an example. In this subforum in at least 3 threads we quoted his "I did a skedaddle-or-whatever and uploaded RDR2 to YouTube" tweet. The immediate reaction to this, as everyone knows he takes pride in his language and takes himself too serious, was amusement on your behalf as you don't know what skedaddle means and tried to sound cool (or so). We think you're an idiot.
In any other case, if it was the tweet of someone else who we think is a fun person who does not take himself too serious, we would think the wrong use was also a joke.
Now it's time to defend Phil, guys and girls. Prove to me: Has he used "skedaddle" on his stream, on multiple occasions? I could see using this word wrong on purpose (the joke could be, he finds the right use by trying and he adamants nobody tells him what it means).
Hey Barkeeper, skedaddle me a drink.
I hope this chest contains a skedaddle.
He skedaddled my hat away.
Wooow, you see me skedaddled.
Oh oh, the sky looks skedaddled today.
My favorite color is skedaddle-blue.
Holy fucking skedaddle!
This is a skedaddled situation.
Wait what, don't get me started on YOUR skedaddle.

It's called "joking" and being light hearted. And it works best when you don't laugh at your own jokes (it sounds super insecure, kills the joke, and I'm not even taking your ear bleeding annoying laugh into consideration). If you have to give a hint of it being a joke cuz you seem to think your audience is stupid, wink to the camera or some shit. The cam isn't just there to watch you masturbating, it's for interaction with the audience.

I watch AvoidingThePuddle aka Aris and noticed a lot of similarities between the two. Both are: out of shape, were part of the FGC at one point, burp in the mic, and shit talk their own chat.

The difference those, is Aris doesn't come off as personal as DSP. Everyone that watches know he's joking and it doesn't come off malicious one bit. Aris actually has charisma and charm to him; he's an actual funny guy and will make skedaddle like jokes to his expense. At first he comes off as an asshole but the more you watch him, the more you get it.

Phil takes this streamer "job" so seriously that he doesn't come off as funny and charismatic that he ends up being the joke. A good example is when he likes to announce at the beginning of every stream to not do this and not do that. Aris will get a long @ question from chat and he will shit talk him, but everyone knows he is joking and to not take it personally. With DSP it feels almost personal just to protect his ego.

Anyway thought I would put my two cents in there before I head to bed because I found a lot of your post very agreeable.

edit: Also to add, Aris really makes you feel part of the stream. He will gloss over only the really dumb questions that get donated. He also participates with the chat and he gets usually 3k+ viewers. Makes you feel part of the stream when there is a decision he wants to make during a game too, since he actively reads it. Which DSP will not do and he has the slowest chat i've seen for the amount of viewers he has. Unless of course you donate.

So on the surface, they seem really similar, but those differences make or break it. So
-actually participate with your chat
-don't take yourself seriously
-don't treat your viewers like garbage
-stop trying so hard to be funny

Makes me think about why Dave brings up Pewdiepie (beyond obvious drama trolling) and I wonder if it isn't because not only is Felix more successful than he'll ever be, but if you watch his new content, it doesn't even look like work. He doesn't even interact with a chat, dood!

But even doing youtube videos, he feels like he's having a legit conversation with his fans more than Dave does when he's actually talking to his fans. Dave, of course, doesn't understand that this is key.

I do think his problems are deeper though, and that he's basically incapable of treating other people in anything more than a transactional manner. He holds grudges for "deals" his parents didn't hold up their end of. He seems to want a relationship for purely transactional reasons. Any friends he's had were tossed aside as soon as they weren't of use to him.

His problem is that the more he interacts with his fans, the less they like him; this is why he was more popular back in the day. When he started out, the game and his own skills caught all the salt and hate. Now that he's aware of his fans, they get the same treatment as everyone else in his life.

This is the true damage the detractors did back in the Youtube days. They made him aware of his audience, and he began addressing them more and more directly. Twitch only made this worse by literally making it possible for him to see who pays him the most. That's why he uses "interactive" the way he does; to him, the only kind of interaction that exists is a transaction.

One other thing he needs to cut out. As soon as he cuts out the prestream music and starts talking it becomes.
"Hello hello, welcome everybody, I'm darksydephil...it's "this date" and the first stream of the day...blah blah blah"
You get the rest. He does this every time he streams and it becomes so tacky. It's like, get to the fucking point dude, talk about what you wanted, do your shoutouts and start the game.

He really needs to find friends again or somewhere else to socialize; you do not use a prestream (which at best is some last minute set-ups and should be no longer than 10 minutes) as a replacement for that and a floor to complain about non-problems. Socialize Phil and maybe try for connections, it's not as hard as it sounds like and at worst at this point you get a few more detractor vids if you get led on. Hell, why not own up to being seen as a joke? It'd make you more money.

I've said this before but he should play games he actually wants to play, not whatever new games that come out for the day 1 views.

The popular and skilled streamers got all those covered, so by playing the same games they are, you're fighting for scraps. He should try playing games that he never played before like Fire Emblem games on GBA/DS. Awakening should be easy enough and is a good gateway game into the franchise.

He should also stop dropping games because something new came out or isn't getting views. Nobody likes a quitter.

He needs to stop blaming games for his bad gaming, and just learn the games controls OR just have fun. Honestly I think he's less exceptional than speedrunners but that's not really saying much.
Another thing is he shouldnt think everyone is a troll. It only feeds his paranoia which shows in the streams.

That's the problem. He's only playing games for money. I don't think he even wants to play games at all unless money is involved.
I can't think of a single game he enjoys anymore at this point. Shit, I don't think he likes playing games.
