DSP "real criticism" thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
The biggest improvement would be to cut down the pre-stream stuff a lot. For reference, his prestream for Sea of Thieves was a little under an hour and a half. Thirty minutes of that was just silence, get shit set up before you start streaming. Secondly, please stop snorting. See a doctor about it or add a mute button for every time you snort like a pig. Third, don't talk about your bowel movements or toilet related topics. It's childish and not funny at all to listen when you make the "steaming turd" joke for the fifth time.

DSP and Chuggaconroy are two lets players who began their careers around the same time. One of them went on to pioneer the genre as an immensely well-loved, "legendary" figure in the community and the other one is DSP.

Theres a million things that separate the two even beyond the styles of videos they make. But if you boiled it down, the one thing missing from DSP is passion. DSP never strives to inspire his fans with the things he loves himself, and his focus on slogging through the newest game for relevency is a short sighted cash grab that gets him nowhere.

On the other hand, Chuggaconroy plays the games he loves whether or not its popular or relevant to the market. He makes it a point to pour in as much passion and love into his work, making a let's play thats inviting and informative so it inspires his viewers to buy the games themselves. He works with other creators to make original art and graphics for every project, he embraces his awkward personality and makes it his own; Chuggaconroy makes it a point to improve himself. He's been doing this shit as long as DSP, but you never see him get cynical or angry at the world.

Is it :autism: of me to mention Chuggaconroy? Sure. It's :optimistic: of me to even expect anything of a similar quality when Phil chooses to live in his own mediocrity. Im just saying the bar for let's plays are that much higher, and the video I linked is a testament to that quality

Edit: tl;dr DSP is the total opposite to Chuggaconroy, and the standards for a let's play are too high for the shit Phil makes nowadays

Chuggaaconroy is GOAT. DSP is WOAT.

Know the difference. It could save your life.

One thing I find very annoying about him is when he repeats his "jokes" 2 or 3 times right after he just finished saying it and in some cases he will drag it out through the playthrough. The Ballpark Beef Franks one in CVX is a prime example, it was never funny the first time.

Yes, a big load of this.

This habit can easily be fixed if Phil would be aware of it. Maybe this point can reach him when we call it by name: Childish behaviour.
It has the quality of "Look daddy, I made a joke. Oh I've done a good! Here is the joke! Oh the joke! Do you perceived my joke? It's funny, right? The joke! *snort*"
He is the only adult I know who speaks like that. And it's embarassing.

Furthermore, It's one thing to tell an unfunny joke, but it can still be worth a chuckle if the teller doesn't exxagerates and let the joke stay on its own. Everything can be funny if sold in the right way. Even Phil has some legit chuckle moments - and then he repeats it over and over again and kills the whole joke, until it's not funny anymore and you hate him for even starting it.
This goes hand in hand with his habit of laughing about his own jokes. 99% of the time it wasn't even funny to begin with. It's the laugh of insecureness.

But again, these are things that can easily be fixed if some awareness exists.
Just like how Kat tries to not show her teeth because she's gets called a horse (which isn't very nice :c ).

Okay so for whatever reason Phil (or Dave, btw what is with that?) has become a favorite. Not sure why, like many I cut my teeth on Ian Brandon Anderson so many years ago and ended up finding the dark underground world of laughing at crazies and so here I am.

That said...

1) Get off that stupid fucking couch, get a chair- hell even a gaming chair, and sit up straight from time to time.

2) Stop looking off to your right, you could game on something that's not fucking up your neck and back by being way out in rightfield compared to your camera's location.

3) Move away from using the name Dark Side Phil, DSP sounds much much better. Especially at your age.

4) Grading your video to be more vibrant and natural would make watching you much, much better. I think colour/white balance would be the easist and offer the most benefit but that's just me.

5) You should never have a "part 188" of any single game.

Sorry for the rant, but he seriously pisses me off how he gets marginal success with how cancerous he is to the gaming community. I honestly think that someone with his history (no such thing as bad publicity) could be more successful than he is now. He peaked early, but never adapted to technology changing. 10 years is an eternity in the Internet. How long did it take for him to switch to direct capture?

1) He should edit videos for youtube, turning 200 videos into one 2-3 hour video, or even two 1.5 hour videos. Every time there is a break between videos it gives the viewer a chance to "change channels." A lot of YouTubes don't watch, but listen, or are doing something else on one monitor while he plays on another monitor. If he has 1 video playing for 2 hours I'm less likely to change to something else. Plus, a longer video can run multiple ads on it. Clean up dead air, snorts, burps, and backtracking. Make himself look better.

2) Twitch has a strange culture, especially with it's chat, with copy-pastas, emote spam, and of course the memes. Phil focuses on deleting a lot of these messages and banning people permanently on first time offenses. It forces people off of the platform to an alternate stream (Hi Tevin!) to watch (without increasing his viewcount) and chat freely about what is going on. Phil might see his viewership increase if he didn't force people to seek alternate means to chat with other viewers about his kahntent. Following this idea, is he needs to embrace "detractor" memes. He is an entertainer, he should use that as a shield, and laugh at himself. He might enjoy what he's doing a little more. It might also help develop a thicker skin so shit doesn't rile him up so easily and feed the trolls.

3) He needs to pick a story and stick to it. Either he will only play a game on the day that it's released, or he will take review copies and play games early. He's talking about buying the "premier" State of Decay so he can get 4 days of it early, which will work with his "schedule" so much easier. He needs to acknowledge he has a 10 year history and all of us autists have everything archived and can call him out on his bullshit. He only refers to his 10 year history of "I've been here for 10 years" but he scrubs everything so it's hard to see how he's evolved.

4) He should stream what he enjoys, instead of new releases. He might be more relate-able and can probably chat more if he's playing something he's familiar with, instead of playing something new and trying to process what is happening on the screen, because his reactions are terrible. Even if he has no interest in being a professional at any game, at least playing something for longer than a week might make him above average at it which would be more interesting to watch.

I cut 3 points from this because I was getting really long winded.

TL;DR: Salvage YouTube with editing, adapt to changing trends in technology and culture, make fun of himself to take the piss out of the detractors, and be less hostile and toxic and maybe he'll get some lasting views.

I'm not quite sure which thread would be appropriate for this comment, but I feel the need to say it somewhere.

So I was farming Mercy sprays on twitch (for the uninitiated, you connect your battlenet account to your twitch account and watch a cumulative 2/4/6 hours of charity streams to unlock stuff) while listening to youtube and playing comp. The past couple streams I've done this on, I've muted the stream and kept the tab active, ENTIRELY uninterested in whatever's going on in the stream. I don't watch people live because of personal preference, and I'm probably never going to look these people up again after the BCRF charity drive is over. But as my queue is loading, I look over to my laptop and see this dude playing lucio, holding a weird ass air canon thing. A couple people in chat say something along the lines of "came for the sprays, stayed for the antics", so I decide to pause my video and see what's going on. He's playing on a special "lucio controller" (air canon and glove), and has even made a special Mercy controller out of ribbons specifically for the charity event. Later on he showcases his D.Va flight controller, his Genji fidget spinner controller, and I learn he's played Widowmaker on a baguette controller. He shouted out other streamers or people in chat, some of who(m?) had similar content to him. As he's playing, he's so, SO sweet to everyone in chat, even saying "aw thanks [my twitch name], glad you're here" when I mention he's got me hooked, and doing his best to keep up with what's going on in chat (saying goodnight to people, congratulating people on things that have happened, laughing at jokes, etc.) Sure, most twitch streamers give shoutouts, but he genuinely seemed happy that so many people were watching, interacting and donating (all donations during a charity stream go to BCRF btw). He wasn't the greatest player, especially with the ribbon controller, but actual OW gameplay hadn't gotten me interested in the other streams. Granted, the gimmick pulled me in, but his personality made me stay, and I fully plan on watching him again.

The guys name is Rudeism btw, if you want to look him up.

Now contrast that with a Dave stream/video. I haven't ever gone to his channel directly, but I've sat and watched direct re-streams/re-uploads. I have NEVER been interested in watching him live or unedited/without commentary, and I'd be totally up for supporting him if/when he became a better "entertainer". Right now? Why would I bother? The way he presents himself is the WORST way to view him. His "interaction" is giving brief answers to donation questions (NOT just any questions in the chat, afaik), and if the chat isn't asking him questions or talking about something HE SPECIFICALLY wants to talk about, then there's long stretches of nothing but complaints, or silence. His attitude has gotten better (forcibly because of the twitch tos update), but he still acts like any other opinion outside of his own is on par with 9/11 conspirators.

If he's not good at games, refuses to edit, and doesn't have a pleasant personality, why would I ever bother watching him directly??

Its basically the only reason he has this entire subforum and such a huge "fanbase" (meaning mostly people that either hate him or just follow him out of sheer curiosity)
Even Chrischan and a lot of other people with a bad hand in life because of disability or whatever circumstances are better at self improvement than DSP.

I think thats why so many people get mad and autistic at DSP. I give people a lot of leeway if they've had a bad lot in life, disability, you know all that nasty shit. So most cows on this sight I don't laugh at, morbid curiosity is typically it.

But Phil? Worst thing that happened to him is that stupid wolverine figurine.

This just reminds me of LobosJr right know. The guy who runs mostly Souls-like-games with challenges and mods. Just today I couldn't stop comparing him and DSP and thought about why Phil's streams are materialized cancer. There are lot of reasons but right this moment it boiled down to way too "serious business" which @Lurkette pretty much gave away.

Lobos has a lot of fun and is always positive towards his chat and he's super thankful for donations (which go to a good cause right now) and I think I never heard him moaning about difficulty spikes. He's simply a very nice person who enjoys his job (yes, streaming is his full time job) and you can see and feel it. It pretty much doesn't matter what he says, it's "unpossible" to take him seriously but he also takes his chat that way: It's not serious business, every comment is cool. The stream is about having a good time for everyone. I rarely watch streamers these days because they are too boring, but I always come back to Lobos when I see him.

Then we have DullShitPhil, the embodiment of narcissism, a back full of negativity, moans all the time when something even slightly inconvenient happens, everything is awful. He usually won't talk to his chat except he lectures them like a senile grandpa. He has no fun, he shows no fun, everything he touches appears like he wants to trash it immediately. And this is his full time job. It pretty much doesn't matter what he says, everything sounds negative and awful and you just know that some of his "jokes" on others behalf is his true opinion, hidden behind an uncertain laugh.
Games are serious business, guys, the game has to bring the money. And don't dare to say anything slightly negative in the chat, it could bring down the business, the lawsuit is on its way guys. Ask an inconvenient question? Banned! Make a joke on Phil's behalf? Banned! Have the wrong username? Banned! The stream is about Phil making money. The audience suffers and won't have fun because Phil is unable to let his history with detractors and trolls slide. The exact antithesis of what makes a stream good and supportable.

EDIT: Man, do I repeat myself each month or does this just happen because Phil won't stop making the very same mistakes over and over again?

EDIT2: HAHAHA. And just when I wrote that, Lobos made a DSP reference! I'm crying right now  I put it in the right thread.

Exactly! I watch people on yt to ESCAPE my life, to DISTRACT myself, why the fuck would I spend an hour of my life listening to someone bitch about their problems before a game? Especially when its "guys I can't afford this nice house I live alone in please help"

I distinctly remember being in a legitimately terrible spot (very close to homeless) while he was moving across the country to a beautiful home with leanna, AND STILL BITCHING ABOUT MONEY. Ive...resolved my emotional issues over him, but I'm still baffled how he can't see what a privilege his situation is, and how so very, very far from "paycheck to paycheck" he could be (and I'm betting IS considering his penchant to exaggerate) if he made just a couple changes. Like selling this house and moving back to CT, he'd cover most of his house debts.

Don't worry, this entire subfourm is people repeating themselves about Phil. At this point its mostly for the catharsis.

My problem is that he has the potential to "redeem" himself or to make a ton of money off his dumb fans but he does neither out of laziness.

He really struck gold with the taxes thing but since this is DSP we are talking about, it allways has that "unintended accident" feel to it. There is a lot DSP could do to maximize profit, such as:

- Actually put games behind paywalls, popular ones even or fan mentions.
- Read troll messages and pretend to be angry
- Acknowledge regulars and paypigs more often (Such as Swagginz, Koz, etc.) in order to make them feel a little bit special so they keep throwing bits to keep their special status.

Keep in mind, many of these are just scumbag tactics but if you are going to be an asshole then be the best asshole.

Phil, stop using the word 'reactionary'. You don't have the slightest clue what it means and it immediately outs you as a fucking moron every time you do. The only definition the word has ever had is exactly the same meaning as people who describe themselves today as 'progressives' when they call people they don't agree with 'REEgressives'.

The word was invented during the French Revolution as a descriptor for those opposed to revolution. It has always meant those who wish for a return to an earlier social system whether political, economical, social, religious, etc. or a refusal to change with society. It is usually a pejorative term although people who view a social revolution as going to far may describe themselves as 'reactionary' in a positive manner.

It has never meant: 'Duhh, I'm reacting to things,' 'The wind blew and I shivered, I'm so reactionary today,' 'Wow, mom just poured me juice. Come watch my reactionary juice drinking.'

Although, funny enough, when you describe your kahntent as 'my kind of reactionary gameplay' it actually does apply somewhat. For example the way you talk about how your racism used to be acceptable is definitely reactionary. The way you want all the new Street Fighter games to go back to being exactly like Super Turbo 2 is reactionary, while the franchise itself has never been reactionary as it has always progressed with each iteration. The way you refuse to change or grow as a person is reactionary. The way you filmed your videos pointing a camcorder at your TV and refusing to use a capture card was reactionary. The way you refuse to optimize your YouTube videos, by editing them, to increase average watch time on your videos is reactionary. The way you refuse to learn how to optimize your use of titles, tags, and descriptions for search and discovery is reactionary. The way you disabled comments on your videos because the new way they were being used in TIHYDP's made you butthurt is definitely reactionary.

Unless you enjoy sounding like a buffoon and describing yourself as opposed to change and the advancement of society, then by all means keep saying it. Because I know how stupid you are here's a TL;DR clip for you Phail:

Edit: Here, let me help you out Phil, I know how lazy you are. Here's a link to synonyms for the word 'reflex': http://www.thesaurus.com/browse/reflex
they much better describe your gameplay style with words like: unthinking, involuntary, and knee-jerk.

I have known of chronic snorters who had their uvula removed and it completely resolved the issue. It may be something for Phil to look into. It improves sleeping too for people with an abnormally long or malpositioned uvula.

He won't have throat surgery because he would lose money from not being able to work.

His Persona 3&4 playthrough is basically everything that's wrong with him. What he needs to do is fix these things because it's hurting him:

1. Ego. Phil doesn't understand how the internet works. If you don't want to be remembered for being stupid, trying to scrub away your past, making a huge deal about it, and saying you don't care while stalking the farms is not the way to do that. If you get mad at people on twitter calling you out, don't go to their pages, stalk them, and block them. That whole twitter fiasco he had could've been avoided if he kept his stupid mouth shut. Not everything is worth replying to, and Phil doesn't get this. He needs to learn to live, laugh, and let go. It's the same reason people bring up the masturbation incident. He flip flops between caring and not caring so much, but you know it bothers him. He just can't help but feed the trolls. I recommend he gets an ACTUAL functional person to be his mods and PRs because he obviously can't do it himself.

2. Paywalls. Phil needs to stop with the paywalls and not giving anything in return after getting money. I see it all the time with people who never had money before. They get super greedy because they never learned what it was like to actually need/use money responsibly. I can tell that Phil is probably a guy with limited experiences with money (probably got mom and pop to buy everything for him) and seeing how YT & Patreon could get him some extra cash he dove in not realizing the consequences. This is why Project 7 and his Persona 3 playthough ultimately failed and burned a bunch of bridges for him. Phil's inexperience and ego drove the workers, his friends, and ideas to crash and burn. If you can't work on a timely schedule, don't offer to do shit for money, it's not that hard. If he really wants to make money he should learn to be responsible and not cry "MUH TAXES" when he can't go out everyday.

3. Editing/Polishing. Phil needs editing. It is a must. The guy is not interesting enough or entertaining enough to carrying a 5 hour stream of a boring game. His ego is way too large to think about anything that might hurt him. Also, due to fact he bans you for even the slightest test on his ego makes his chat a hostile place to be. To add onto that once he finished uploading his videos, they're all vids of him playing the game awfully and not doing anything fun in them. And to make it worse, when something fun does come up (like a legendary Pokemon or subboss) he kills it because he doesn't want to enjoy it. Therefore his audience can't either. Once again, if his ego doesn't like it, no one else can. Also, he needs to cut the snorting and coughs, it's annoying.

4. Lying. Phil thinks he can lie on the internet and not get caught. It would be hilarious if it wasn't sad at this point. He either needs to own up to what he said, or not. It's that simple. If you promised a full playthrough of Persona 3, do it. If you dislike the game so much, give people a refund and apologize. Don't pretend you never said you wouldn't play it.

5. Lastly, Time Management. Phil has too much time on his hands. He's accustomed to being lazy and it shows so hard. He has 30- 2 hour pre-streams to talk about his life, streams for an hour and then quits. How does this make any sense? Because he doesn't want to do it. He wants to be lazy because he knows he can shill out for money later. Slowly, it's been killing him, but it's not efficient. What he needs to do is stream once or twice a week for long periods of time, or stream everyday for short periods of time. This is HIS JOB. And he needs to start treating it like one, but I know he won't because he has no manager.

Sorry for the rant, but he seriously pisses me off how he gets marginal success with how cancerous he is to the gaming community. Supposedly it took him five(!!) years to do it and he bitched about how "complicated" it was to do so and how he would need to use headphones.

One of the funny things about this guy is how he claims his streaming/recording is his "job" but he treats it like some kind of half-assed hobby where he gets to LARP as some tin pot despot of a banana republic. Like, anybody with two brain cells to put together step back and think, "Gee, everyone else's streams have better video and audio quality, so what's the incentive for people to watch my shitty camera captures?".

Don't try to ask about green screens either...

Please for the sake of your health, go outside for a few hours or put on some loition. Staying in your house like hermit and leaving out once a week or none at all is obviously having a negative effect on your health. It will be miracle that you'll make it 50.

Can anyone tell the difference?
