Shrek to be rebooted by Minions creator - AND THEY DONT STOP COMING AND THEY DONT STOP COMING AND THEY DONT STOP COMING AND THEY DONT STOP....

Like the Spider-Man reboot, this strikes me as one of those things where they’re making a movie because the slot is allocated.

It sounds entirely pointless. Quite apart from anything else, the reason the first one was so acclaimed was because it was a clever subversion of Disney. Now ironic kids’ movies full of innuendo and pop culture references are the norm. When was the last time someone made a non-subversive fairytale movie? All I can think of is the live action Disney remakes. In a world where Disney themselves are parodying Disney Princesses, what place is there for a Shrek remake?

What if the subversion is in non-subversion?

Ironically the original film is both subversive and non-subversive. That's why it aged so well.

You are right. Despite the key subversions like the beautiful princess becoming a permanent ogre, our hero being far from that, all the jokes towards fairy tales and Disney and especially the dragon being a helpful ally, it still holds a fairy tale plot. Princess in tower, powerful curse, unwanted marriage, happily ever after. It knows what to change.

It even had the classic Disney-style storybook opening. Which took itself quite seriously before seguing into a shit joke and Smash Mouth.

I like the first Shrek because although it is definitely filled with all the malice and bile and rage of Katzenberg at Disney, it does still feel genuine. There were plenty of fairy tale spoof films that followed it but none of them seemed to have any heart to them. It's weird, but the film still holds up pretty well because there was some earnestness to it underneath the defiant middle finger. The same could be said with the second film, really.

And then the series got way too popular for its own good and the other films were pretty directionless and unfunny.

It's even a pretty conventional buddy-buddy romance film with Shrek not wanting to be with Donkey at first, then Fiona not wanting to be with Shrek, then as they travel they learn to appreciate one another but due to some kind of misunderstanding they go their separate ways. The lead finds out how stupid he was and saves the day/ gets the girl in the last possible moment and it all works out. It's a tried and tested formula

I have a feeling that there's gonna be a lot of pot shots at Game of Thrones. Not looking forward to this either way.

That Grinch movie looks awful, a story that intend to forsake commercialization is already doing product placements on TV.
Don't forget its use of absolute normie-tier "memes" in its internet marketing. Illumination is pretty much the poster child of shallow pandering to base consumerism.

Illumination is a front of Disney to get revenge on Dreamworks to tarnish he legacy of Shrek.

Illumination is just a money machine. Their formula is to make the film as cheaply as possible, plough money into advertising and then rake in the money off the back of the fact that parents have actually heard of the movie when they're looking for something to keep the kids quiet. As long as the movie's good enough that people can sit through it and will do so again for a sequel or four, that's all it needs.

I mean, they struck an advertising deal with Mazda to use The Lorax, a film with a strongly environmentalist message. That's the level of artistic integrity we're talking here.

I don't think this was really necessary, but I'm not going to assume it's shit only because of Minions- the problem with minions is they're fucking everywhere and draw attention from other things and are awful.

I mean, it probably will be shit, but it's not certain.
