Man I loved the first Shrek movie.

Like the Spider-Man reboot, this strikes me as one of those things where they’re making a movie because the slot is allocated.
It sounds entirely pointless. Quite apart from anything else, the reason the first one was so acclaimed was because it was a clever subversion of Disney. Now ironic kids’ movies full of innuendo and pop culture references are the norm. When was the last time someone made a non-subversive fairytale movie? All I can think of is the live action Disney remakes. In a world where Disney themselves are parodying Disney Princesses, what place is there for a Shrek remake?
Ironically the original film is both subversive and non-subversive. That's why it aged so well. What if the subversion is in non-subversion?

It even had the classic Disney-style storybook opening. Which took itself quite seriously before seguing into a shit joke and Smash Mouth. You are right. Despite the key subversions like the beautiful princess becoming a permanent ogre, our hero being far from that, all the jokes towards fairy tales and Disney and especially the dragon being a helpful ally, it still holds a fairy tale plot. Princess in tower, powerful curse, unwanted marriage, happily ever after. It knows what to change.

I have a feeling that there's gonna be a lot of pot shots at Game of Thrones. Not looking forward to this either way.Like the Spider-Man reboot, this strikes me as one of those things where they’re making a movie because the slot is allocated.

Don't forget its use of absolute normie-tier "memes" in its internet marketing. Illumination is pretty much the poster child of shallow pandering to base consumerism. That Grinch movie looks awful, a story that intend to forsake commercialization is already doing product placements on TV.
Illumination is just a money machine. Their formula is to make the film as cheaply as possible, plough money into advertising and then rake in the money off the back of the fact that parents have actually heard of the movie when they're looking for something to keep the kids quiet. As long as the movie's good enough that people can sit through it and will do so again for a sequel or four, that's all it needs.Illumination is a front of Disney to get revenge on Dreamworks to tarnish he legacy of Shrek.

Shrek 1 and 2 are sacred cows and is made better for the fact its composer did the Metal Gear franchise.
