The art is nice but the writing is pretty bland. I'm not sure what this is trying to be. At least Oh Joy Sex Toy is bizarre in how bad it is.

Yeah, the art isn't complete garbage. At least this artist knows how to shade and color. The writing on the other hand is very...meh. Not too entertaining. Maybe if I was the intended audience I'd like it more, but it's just okay. Not mind-boggingly terrible, but not good either.

so what, it’s a picture of lesbians interacting normally without any gaudy pride flags, down with cis shirts, or ugly traits.
this is the kind of “representation” that i’d consider good. so what it’s humanized wall-e and eva? consider that they could’ve made wall-e a fat troon with vitiligo carrying around stim toys, but instead chose to make wall-e an average, if not cute, girl. also, i could instantly recognize the characters.

i mean this is honestly generic kawaii anime girl humanization number 1274738293. although not as bad as the oftentimes offensive vitiligo caracatures that tumblrites create, these designs are all exactly the same and are overdone.
i might be biased just because i really hate this art style and method of designing characters. slap some identifying clothing and change the hairstyle/eye color of one anime girl and bam! new humanization.
i’m sure a lot of tumblrinas see this problem as well and try to counteract it by making their humanizations as ugly as possible because they lack the skill required to draw multiple distinct and unique, yet still attractive characters.

so really we’re stuck between generic moe shit or generic sjw shit. at least the sjw shit is fun to laugh at, though.

I’ve mostly seen it happen to Narancia, Mista, and Buccellati when it comes to Part 5 characters, Giorno sometimes too.

The main excuse that’s often used is that “They’re traveling a lot so they’re bound to at least get tan.” 1.) It’s usually way darker than a tan, and 2.) They travel by car most of the time, I doubt you’d get that dark by sitting in a car.

Besides, Narancia, Mista, and Buccellati are all Italian, a place where lighter skin tones are most common, and Giorno is European and Japanese, so that wouldn’t work either.

Narancia was shaded a little darker in the PS2 game and I believe his figurines, and Mista did get a little tan in the anime which imo fits him, but they're all Italian, except for Giorno who's the child of a pale Japanese woman and a pale Englishman. So I can get around giving them a bit of a tan on account of them being outdoor-sy Italians to be honest.
But we know that that's not what those people are doing.

More proof "SJW" artists don't know how tans works. It's a slight darknening of the color of your skin. Most of these characters have fairer skin or darker midtoned skin. Yeah, you'll get a tan, but it's not going to look like a black person. The only extreme tans that these people are seeing are people who purposely use trashy tanning booths.

In real life, a tan is the darknening of your skin in response to the sun as a form of protection from the harshness of the sun's rays. Most normal people who get tans usually get a slight variation because people usually wear susnscreen. But even without that, no tan is that dark unless you do it on purpose. You would have to be in the sun for hours. And even then, you'd probably get a sunburn after that (but I don't want to give people any ideas).

They should just admit they wanted the character to be black because they wanted them to be black. Not hide behind that flimsy excuse.

While I agree that the original isn’t egregious enough as some of the other examples presented on this thread, I think you’re selling the Japanese one too short. Despite some of the admittedly typical anime shorthand, there’s actually a lot of attention to detail and nuance that the Tumblr one just doesn’t have.

For instance, the hair style and visor aren’t the only things nodding to Eve - the cloak is also being used to emmulate the teardrop shape of the original design, even going so far as to use the shadow of the hood to recreate the shape of Eve’s screen face. She even has prosthetic limbs, but it’s clear these aren’t included in the Tumblr fashion of being used solely for “representation” brownie points, but to recreate how Eve looks when she’s in motion - something extremely important but often overlooked in a lot of humanized rediesigns of non-human animation characters. The Tumblr one has none of those things, best exemplified that the Wall-E redesign needs to have their name plastered on a hat to get across who it’s supposed to be.

Between the two, I’d much rather see more from the anime one. It takes into account the feel and nuance of hos the moves and behave rather than simply character looks and how they move, which shows a lot more consideration than just slapping a white bob and a turtleneck on a black chick and calling it a day.

That's a rule in all online avatars. The more stylized and cutesy/cool the avatar is, the uglier the real person is by comparison. This is why you must embrace your unflattering traits and create an online avatar to match!

I really don't think the anime one is that bad as a design. At least you can easily tell who she is. If I saw the sjw one alone without context I'd think it was some humanized homestuck character

the quality of the japanese one isn’t bad, and yes the character is recognizable. but it looks like every other kawaii anime girl redesign.
admittedly the black one has a pretty lackluster outfit, but they were going for simplicity. eva is a smooth, simplistic design, and instead of opting for making her look super robotic and over the top like the anime one, they went with a streamlined futuristic look. also, dark skin genuinely looks good with a bright colored bob imo. she doesn’t need fancy complex robot parts and a shit ton of flair as a human because imo it just doesn’t fit with her minimalist design.

also, while the eva redesign is generic, the wall-e one didnt even need the logo on the hat to be recognizable. the wall-e one is definitely the stronger of the two. i think you’d have to be completely unfamiliar with wall-e to not recognize the color scheme and overall design.

i dunno, maybe i’m just tired of seeing well-portrayed diversity being posted here. those redesigns are definitely cute. pandering, sure, but it matches wall-e’s color scheme. it’s autistic to see something someone made gay in a tasteful way and screech about it despite it being well-executed.
speaking of which, ree’ing about someone drawing a character 2 shades darker than they really are is just as bad as the autists that scream “whitewashing!” when a character is drawn 2 shades lighter.

find me a vitiligo infested morbidly obese huge lipped butch lesbian wall-e and then post it. now THAT’S the good shit.

Some of these are okay. My biggest problem is that these people don't understand that olive skin tones exist and they aren't that dark. If they pulled up reference photos it'd be easy to correct.
As for Josuke he's biracial so I doubt his skin would be dark at all.
