On the subject of single-appearance characters, I somehow doubt modern Simpsons would do a joke about a psychotic guy polishing his gun and getting ready to shoot up his workplace.

Spoiler: 'Marge Gets a Job' - 'I am the Angel of Death, the time of purification is at hand.'

You forgot how that joke leads into another, where Burns implements Marge's various suggestions (Tom Jones, funny hats) with absolutely no change, what I think is a nice satirical jab at such superficial initiatives for improving workplace morale (maybe even within wider society, but that would kind of reaching). Certainly modern Simpsons wouldn't be able do anything like it.

Fuck that, compare this shit to the Treehouse of Horror episode where the teachers turn into cannibals. It was both hilarious and scary. You never actually see the process of the kids getting killed because cannibalism in and of itself is already disturbing enough.
