UN Government Shutdown Megathread/Updates - News of the ongoing/halted Goverment Shutdown from 12/22/18 -1/25/19

Here's the news of the Government Shutdown as of 1/22/19

It's been a month now since this shutdown started which started back in December and no deal seems to be coming.

"The longest government shutdown in U.S. history entered its 32nd day on Tuesday with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expected to call up legislation to advance a proposal from President Donald Trump, which Democrats have already said they’ll reject.

The president said in a Jan. 19 speech he would support a mix of immigration-related proposals in exchange for $5.7 billion to build a wall or other barriers along the border. Trump’s supporters, including Vice President Mike Pence, pointed to the offer as evidence of the president’s willingness to strike a compromise with Democrats.

Pelosi’s Democrats, meanwhile, plan more votes of their own in the House to reopen the government, with a new offer of $1 billion for border upgrades -- but not a wall -- on tap this week.

So, as I see it, Donald Trump is announcing a temporary (apparently this can't be stressed enough) end to the Longest Continuous Government Shutdown in American History in order to prepare for something else, like the real war (negotiations between Trump and House Democrats), or for some extralegistative actions.

Any Democrat, Mainstream Media, and Twitter celebration (especially the #TrumpCaved bullshit) is completely premature at this point.

Especially since The Trump Wall clearly wasn't a hyperbolic promise, but a real one. And if there is only one person in the world who that promise is important to, it is Donald John Trump Senior.

Donald Trump won't ever cave on the wall. If nothing else, his own ego couldn't allow it.

There is also something everyone seams to be forgetting.

Mexico was supposed to pay for it, though. Why are we going to all this if Mexico is gonna pay for it?

A continually porous border and lack of any disincentive to just popping over will, yes.

It will still be somewhat porous even if the wall is built. Trump has already said that it won't be a continuous structure. I'm curious about just how much of it needs to be built by 2020 for him to legitimately claim that he has fulfilled his promise to build the wall.

It needs to be done to secure our border, full stop.

The higher you build a wall the taller the next ladder will be.

The right are being as overly dramatic as the left right now. The last week and a half, starting with the Gillette ad, then Buzzfeed, then Covington, then Roger Stone, all the shutdown drama, now this.... the autism has been ridiculous. If that twat Ben Shapiro starts to talk like a Chicken Little, the sky is falling, and starts shitting loudly on Trump, then I think the autism has salted the earth for generations, and you can only recover by watering the crops with Brawndo.

Or the blood of exploded border crossers?

Exactly. A lot of black-or-white thinking in American politics this thread...

The Wall is symbolic (thanks, apple, for autocapitalizing it) at this point. It is not a method of defense. It is a statement. Any fortification built by man or nature can be overcome by an attacker dedicated and able enough to do so.

I am willing to take away money from meaningless social services to pay for a giant middle finger to central and South America. Yes, it can and will be bypassed by people clever enough to do so, but something that says “fuck all you goddamn beaners I hate you so goddamn much” that can be seen from orbit excites me and fills me with a sense of patriotism. However, since I am from Texas, I instead wonder how it will benefit the eventual second Texan revolutionary war.
