Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

In other news Lauren is still trying to become relevant https://boundingintocomics.com/2019...l-arroz-accept-renfamous-challenge-to-debate/ Is likely hoping that the woke crowd that go to conventions will help her out. Here's some big words for someone who had already ducked a debate challenge.

Debating comicsgate with the idiot that (practically) got kicked out comicsgate and Ben Henderson (who was that again?) I can’t see this not being entertaining.

Btw you guys (cg spes) can ignore her y’know? It’s like they learned nothing from the Melissa Morgue incident.

IDK enough about Ben and his ability to debate, but JDA is probably the wrong person as he has been shown to be a massive sped. He might be able to bring up some interesting points about book publishing and diversity, but i would like to see Blake Northcotte take the challenge. She seems to be smarter, better articulated and way less mental than JDA and comes with the bonus points of removing the REEE muhsoggyknee and REEE Vox day accusations. So they might actually have to debate her points.

Those topics Lauren put up is obviously designed to get under EVS's skin, but they are massively ret.arded and i would love to see her try and debate them.
  • Merits of 2nd crowdfunding - only one i know is RCMs European style book that looks like you picked it up off a bathroom floor and jawbreakers. His 2nd earned him $150k more in sales +15k charity and allowed him to perform a pilot run to see if he could personally handle Jawbreakers numbers - answer was no. Sounds like it has pretty good merits.
  • Grifting - Books are being delivered and updates and progress has been shown on those that are running later than their estimated delivery. Now she can defend the grifts of sammich boys, B Clay Moore's and the other guy who is 5 years overdue and won't address the customers. Add in the current industry scams and you've got a real winning topic here.
  • Dolls - Unlike Lauren, EVS and his wife seem to have a healthy marriage and talk to one another, so she already knows about Rose Tico and EVS buying SW junk to make money on his YouTube page.
I would say stick to something you're good at Lauren, but well...

I will be the first to say that Dan DiDio should never have given Bendis they keys to DC's flagship character, but I thought he did a decent job on the first issue of Young Justice. At least he was able to write Bart Allen/Impulse (mostly) in character though bringing Conner Kent back makes me ask, "Why age Jon into a teenager?"

I'll also be honest and say that I'm mostly buying it for Pat Gleason's art.

It's a testament to Abnett that he's able to get those kinds of numbers with Aquaman. But you have to wonder if he makes more money doing Black Library stuff.

Abnett is and always has been a fantastic writer. Go read his Guardian's of the Galaxy and Nova. It was fantastic. As opposed to the Bendis shit fest that came after it. Or his long run on Legion of Superheros. Starling may be the best writer for epic cosmic shit, but Abnett is close behind him.

Rating this post agree just isn’t enough. Abnett and Lanning basically created the Guardians of the Galaxy you see in the movies*, they managed to beat Waid at his own game on Legion, and pretty much everything else Abnett picks up is gold.

*Yes, they didn’t actually create any of these characters (except Cosmo I’m pretty sure) but they were the guys who wrote their modern personalities and put them on a team together.

Oh, no argument. I've found his stuff to invariably hit at least a seven on a 10 chart.

The number for some of these books (specifically Naomi) still aren't out,
Yeah, I am going to take an educated guess and say those numbers will be ass as well seeing that everything with Bendis attached to it is tanking. Plus, how does a book called "Naomi" featuring a nondescript black woman on the cover draw any prospective readers? It's looking like it was a bad idea to hand over so much of the creative direction of your company to man 15 years past his creative prime and his crack crew of never-was hacks.

I am curious about how much bleeding will it take before they pull Bendis off Superman. Anyone want to try guessing a number?

It would depend on the contract he signed with DC. Bendis went over to DC specifically to "write" Superman and publish his own shitty line of books. It wouldn't surprise me if he had some guarantees in his contract that locked him on those titles for a set amount of time. If that's the case--and I'm just speculating here--DC really can't do much except maybe cut costs by giving him a cheaper artist and less promotion.

As far as I can tell, Bendis seems to be suffering from the same writing crutch as Tom King. Neither author is writing the characters, but writing about the characters with the metatextual subtlety of a brick to the face. Its that weirdly passive 3rd person tone to everything that's really off-putting. They spend so much time having the characters talk (or think) about what they're doing that it ends up undercutting the drama and stakes of what's actually taking place. The comics Bendis and King write aren't exciting. They don't tickle that adventurous spirit that we all have. They are, instead, dull exercises in navel-gazing by a bunch of middle aged men who are trying to ape Alan Moore, but have no idea why Alan Moore's metatextual stories actually work.

Fuck you, Tom King.

My problem with Tom King is I often just feel like I’m getting the same exact metatextual message over and over. With someone like Moore or Morrison, yeah they clearly have certain ideas that come up over and over again in their work, but each book you pick up feels like you’re getting a new angle on those ideas, like every story is an argument in favor of a grander thesis that is their worldview. But with King, books like Vision and Mister Miracle are just giving me the same exact “wow isn’t average suburban life unsettling?” vibe over and over again. It’s boring.
