Andrew Torba / Gab (Gab.com / Gab.ai) / Dissenter (dissenter.com) - An incompetent captain sinking millions of other people's dollars.

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
What pisses me off about these things is that The fact that It's either GAB or twitter. You either deal with far left wing echo chamber or a far right.

The average normie only cares about Facebook and sometimes Instagram. Twitter and Gab are designed to be honeypots for losers. That’s why Twitter is seemingly always one bad quarter away from shutting down and Gab will have to keep finding new hosting every few months.

Gab is launching a sister project called Dissenter which is apparently going to require a browser extension and allow users to comment on any page. The comments cannot be moderated by the site owner.

Torba spreads himself ever thinner with an enormous ensemble of products that seem to have no real value or market penetration.

Gab.com is pleased to officially launch its sister product, Dissenter.

Dissenter is the comment section of the Internet.

Dissenter creates a free speech comment section for any URL on the web. Users can access comment threads on a URL by searching for the link on Dissenter's web app at dissenter.com. Alternatively, if users install the free and open-source Dissenter browser extension, users can see comments being made on any URL they navigate to displayed in a sidebar in their browser.

Dissenter.com thus extends Gab's reach, and its free speech platform, across the entire internet. Anyone with a Gab.com account can access Dissenter, and utilize it to express themselves on any content on the internet in any way they see fit, as long as their chosen form of expression is legal in the United States.

Dissenter has become a necessary tool due to rampant corporate censorship of ordinary internet users, whether that takes the form of YouTube demonetizing millions of videos and removing comment sections, Facebook and Instagram banning British activist Tommy Robinson for his political opinions, or Netflix banning comedy shows at the behest of Saudi princes.

A free, open-source utility that allows people to dissent from orthodoxy and express what they are really thinking, without fear of reprisal, is essential in order to wrest control of the Internet and public discourse from Silicon Valley tech giants.

Gab.com and dissenter.com lead the way in keeping the Internet free. All people are welcome to use our products to express themselves freely.

Finally, Gab no longer requires an invite code to join. Tell a friend. :)

Thank you

How does he possibly think that's going to work? Gab got carpet-fucked, how does he think it won't happen again?

Torba's mindset is such that, they get removed from CDNs in the US for corporate reasons, so they move to a country with hatespeech laws because reasons.

While it's true that Iceland, Netherlands, Switzerland, et al have very strong anti-espionage laws and journalist protection laws, they do not have strong laws protecting 'defamation' or 'hate speech'.

Such things have been tried before, like Third Voice.

If this was anyone but Torba, I'd think it was a good idea and be looking forward to it, but that idiot will completely fuck it up.

Funny thing, it scared the hell out at Vice and it menaged to get the attention of Styxehenhammer666. http://archive.is/Lih99

Users of far-right social network Gab can now comment on the entire internet
By David Gilbert Feb 27, 2019

Gab, the social network of the far right, has extended its free-speech platform with a tool that allows users to bypass “rampant corporate censorship” and comment on almost anything, the company said Tuesday.
Called Dissenter, the new service lets users comment on news articles, YouTube videos and even individual social media posts — even if those sites don’t have comment sections or have comments switched off.

For example, movie review website Rotten Tomatoes announced that it was switching off comments on the new Captain Marvel movie this week, over concerns that trolls planned to leave negative comments following remarks by the film’s star Brie Larson.
However, Dissenter users are already giving their opinions on the movie and Rotten Tomatoes decision.

I installed Dissenter and it's an OK idea, but the execution is miserably bad.

1. The share button just does not work. A furry made a playful comment about the KF and I wanted to share it, but the Share button just takes me to the top of the page. There's no way to get a perma-link to anything.

2. The thumbs up button does not work. Liking a comment does not increment the score. Pressing it twice throws an error. It doesn't even change the color of the button or anything.

3. You get a 500 error trying to edit a post.

4. As per Torba's usual work the UI is fucking garbage and looks like some shit a curry sweatshop worker whipped up in a weekend. I think it is specifically his love for small, plain fonts with inappropriate and inconsistent spacing that makes it miserable to look atit.

5. Sharing to Gab looks like this. Instead of just having a tab for Dissenter links or, you know, a permalink to the actual post, it does this.

Basically it's just Torba's standard operating procedure. It's looks and operates like a cheap piece of shit.

This thread is a good start, but doesn't fully delve into what a shitshow Gab is or how hypocritical Torba is. Torba "reluctantly" implemented a block feature and then proceeded to block everyone who was remotely critical of him, so that all replies to his posts were from sycophants and no one could call him out directly. He does the same on Twitter. He then has the gall to make posts like this to promote Dissenter. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Also Rob Monster, head of Epik, has been active on Gab himself and trying to push any number of products on the gullible userbase. He's made himself into a lolcow in his own right with how he's handled himself there. He starts off with BSing about how Gab is likely being throttled by ISPs(it isn't, it's just poorly programmed) and how his free VPN can save users from this.

When called out on this blatantly dishonest marketing and accused of being a grifter, Monster responded rather aggressively. After all, there's no way someone who mysteriously shows up in the wake of the Bowers shooting offering a free VPN and marketing it in a highly dishonest way could be using it as a means of harvesting data.

Monster has shown a pattern of replying to criticism in this way.

Monster seems to have way more influence than he lets on, and appears to be using Gab as a means of making inroads in Alt-Tech more generally. He comes out very clearly that he wants control in any "partnership" he might create and gets very pissed when he gets turned down. Both Brave and DuckDuckGo appear to have shot him down.

So the shady stuff Monster's been involved with in the past would seem to be more relevant as he's not just a domain provider and seems to be trying to cash in on Gab dummies as well. I would highly recommend staying away from anything this guy's involved in.

Couldn't he have hired someone who was capable of actually writing something functional?

There's actually been a lengthy downward spiral of functionality on the site. GabTV and Topics being the two main removals.

It really inspires confidence when development cycles result in steady degeneration and loss of features because the entity doing maintenance is so completely dysfunctional it can't even keep software operational much less improve it.

This may not be the right thread to ask, and I apologise if its been asked before, but what's the main roadblock for starting one of these Twitter/YouTube/Facebook clones? Do you need big investment or can anyone smart enough do it themselves?

Has @Null ever thought about doing it? Not worth the headache?

Social media, all of it, is indefinitely unprofitable. YT runs at +$1bn/yr loss, Twitter runs at a loss. They're all propped up by either (a) angel investing by evil companies that desire to twist your mind, (b) selling your data like fb/google does.

Based on a careful observation of Gab since its founding, the entire site is almost certainly a pump-and-dump operation where Torba got the thing built very cheaply and quickly and put in minimal cost and effort in making it functional while focusing on advertisement and getting donations/investor dollars from tech and financial illiterates based on bold promises and political pandering. The site is nowhere near as active as Torba claims and he's inflated user counts with bots. The recent Dissenter launch is almost certainly heavily bot-inflated given the dramatic rise in members in specific groups on the site without any noticeable increase in activity and engagement in them, and the Dissenter app also almost certainly has heavily inflated user totals. Torba takes advantage of the fact that almost nobody reports on Gab apart from the random puff piece from sympathetic but uninformed right-leaning media outlets and the SPLC, which has found a number of very shady things that are probably true about the site but nobody on the site will believe them for political reasons. https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2019/02/14/no-way-gab-has-800000-users-web-host-says

I wouldn't be surprised if they have more legitimate accounts than believed, although there is no way they have that many active accounts. For instance, I have an account there just because, but have basically never used it because it turned into a toilet nearly immediately, and I don't even mean Nazi/alt-right shit so much as just not having any content at all.

Almost all of the people there I liked have gotten out of there anyways. The only people there now are either Torba cultists, bots, or a handful of new people suckered in by the "buzz" Torba's been trying to stir up around Dissenter.
