Gab's going all-in on Bitcoin.

Get ready for the "Bitcoin, money of nazis" thinkpieces?

On second thought.

Why the fuck isn't Gab just a Mastodon/Pleroma instance?

The ActivityPub-based social network being "free of nazis" is a goddamn fucking myth. It's just that a few of the megaservers have a tendency to serverblock not-totally-libtard servers. That shit doesn't even cut you off from the whole network, it only cuts you off from those servers.

Both Mastodon and Pleroma are FOSS. Just fork one of those if you think you can add useful features.

Gab the social network doesn't need to exist. ActivityPub already handles the whole free-speech thing, even if they don't advertise it.

Gab the software project doesn't need to exist. I haven't seen one thing it actually imrpoves on over Twitter, let alone ActivityPub.

This is going to be fun because Gab is essentially boomersville at this point, and Torba has been busy convincing people who can't figure out how to set an avatar picture, that they need to buy crypto in order to fight the Chinese hackers/deepstate/Soros/globalist cabal.

It seems that a lot of younger, more savvy Gab users are migrating over to Pleroma/Mastodon which is a far more functional setup than the ongoing dumbster-fire of Gab.com.

Snail mail money is legit. Here's the latest email:

Gab Community,

Gab.com is the fastest-growing, and most controversial, social media company in the world. The cause of the growth and the controversy is the same: Gab's moderation policy, which mirrors the First Amendment. Gab now has over 840,000 users and is growing very quickly.

JpbZnku6tPfBrdiKoGGwFRZFR99Dj4HNwE9lpShV84CShP_sSz__-Cv-6IQr3Y5BPiZyuLpW4-5-kzKrHw=s0-d-e1-ft

Gab's vision is to provide a global utility that uses American law to protect free expression everywhere, including in places like Iran, China and Russia. As official censorship is enabled by mainstream Silicon Valley companies, such as Google (e.g. Project Dragonfly), increases, users around the world are becoming increasingly annoyed with platforms that sell them out to their governments or enforce local content and publishing restrictions, such as blasphemy and hate speech laws.

In the long-term, the existence of Gab will promote liberal democracy and openness in closed societies, as the expansion of free speech rights has always done. The interesting and controversial conversations that bring users back to a website for more interaction, the absence of which are causing Facebook and Twitter's growth numbers to atrophy, will continue to bring users to Gab in the years to come.

Today, December 15th, is Bill of Rights day. On this day in 1791 the First Amendment was ratified for a reason. Gab feels it's important for at least one major social networking platform in the U.S. to be the home of the First Amendment and free speech online. We refuse to waver on this mission.

How can you support Gab?

Gab has been no-platformed by every major payment processor online. We have been blacklisted and rejected by multiple banks on our journey to bring back payment processing to Gab. We are hopeful that we will find support from one liberty-minded bank in the future, but for now there are a few other ways you can support our mission.

GabPro/ Donations Payment Option

Thank you, and remember to speak freely.

CEO of Gab.com

That's because behind all the crying and faux-altruism, Andrew Torba just wants to make money.

If Torba gave a shit about creating a true "free speech platform", he would have forked some of those other projects that aren't as vulnerable as Gab is. He would have been more concerned with improving the site for its users than with how he can make money off those users.

He doesn't understand that the masses don't give a shit about him making money. Just like the masses don't give a shit if Twitter or Instagram make money. They just want a cool site to interact on.

He's also seriously misgauging his userbase if he thinks those tards are going to go all cryptocurrency for him. They aren't. Here is a better audience for that shit and a bunch of people chimped out about a completely voluntary miner.

Boomers can barely figure out how to post on *chan boards, or set avatars. Let alone figure out something as complex as a bitcoin.

He's alienated everyone by acting exceptional at every opportunity. The only reason anyone interesting uses Gab is to troll the older MAGA/Qanon folks. He's in for a rude awakening if he thinks he can fund his crappy ass site by trying to talk granny into buying cryptocurrency.

Anytime Torba talks about Free speech being his priority, my mind automatically goes to DSP saying he streams because he loves video games.

Both of them just happen to squarely land in that hilarious intersection of absolute insincerity and absolute incompetence that in my opinion make the best careercows.

Heh, this is right after bitcoin dropped in value by like 50%.
:story:

This guy is such a retard. :story:

Why did he use a San Francisco-based company in Coinbase when he could have used dozens of other Bitcoin exchanges that aren't even US-based (Coinmama for example is based in Israel AFAIK)?

It's almost like he's deliberately choosing these places for maximum martyrdom value, rather than sustainability.

He's a retard, but I wouldn't have considered coinbase to be likely to be at the beck and call of the racketeering enterprise apparently currently controlling all access to the banking system.

He's been screeching for a while about Silicon Valley and their agenda against him.. so he chooses Coinbase..?

Come on man. That decision can only be made by a lolcow.

Coinbase might be being pressured by their card processor. Though it makes me wonder if a card processor would pressure a company to drop a client from all services, or just the services that touch the card processor. (ie could they keep Torba on and just send him ACH payments?)

The only thing I'd previously seen people kicked off coinbase for was gambling, and the UIGEA more or less forces their hand on that. Just kicking off random people whose political opinions they don't like is fucked.

I agree, but when it comes to Torba, there is always more to the story. The guy is a master at being victim to convince his users to send him money.

Torba floated the idea of making Gab invite only a few days ago, and was strongly rebuked by the "community". Shortly there after the site began to intermittently crash, which Torba naturally blamed on an army of bots operated by the "deep state" or a hostile foreign power. Of course the only way to combat these nefarious bits of code was to make the site invite only.
