I agree with most but the "new, young & talented" crop of "Pros" have no love for the medium as well as being egotistic pricks. It's plainly obvious most do comics as a stepping stool for movies/tv/animation. Hell, the
prime example of how blatant this exact problem is, just got a tv show for a book that sells less than 1K issues.
I'm aware of who Maggs is, because I remember seeing those tweets when they came out. And I've seen quite a few more, and I couldn't help but wonder why this exceptional troon had such an inflated view of itself. And I kept trying to find something they'd created that I was familiar with, and all that came to mind was '
that shit that you find in the budget rack bagged together with ten other comics for three bucks'. And looking through some of the material, it seems like it's just overpriced birdcage liner. I wouldn't roll up one of those books to beat an ugly dog, much less read it.
I mean, those sales numbers are sad. If Maggs were a musician, her audience would be a few close friends, parents and siblings, and some folks that confused the name with a more popular musician and just decided to stick around for the bar's drink specials. Those are... really fucking sad numbers.
I'm no expert, but I know for a fact that top titles right now have sale numbers that got D-list books cancelled in the 1990's during the comics collapse. They're literally doing worse than they were when the industry went to absolute shit, and I think the only reason that Marvel book IP's aren't being piecemeal-leased out to independent writers is because Disney is keeping them around to squeeze every dollar they can out of the movies- and I honestly think that eventually, Disney will sever the comics side- even though it seems like every 'comic pro' is working from their apartment (or their friend's couch) and emailing in their work.
I'm still very confused about the industry's tactic of attacking their audience/customers. No matter what industry you're in, this has never been an effective tactic. A lot of these comic professionals seem to think their work is their personal hobby and they aren't beholden to the opinions of paying customers.
We've watched these irrational hacks smear their own feces on their faces, call it war paint, and then proclaim we're cowards for not wanting to high-five them for it.
Soon, I think the entire Comic Book Movie craze is going to end, just like the zombie movie and WW2 movie crazes. And when that's all over and done with, I'm pretty sure this industry is dead. Spider Man will be Betty Boop, just some old character that was a thing back in the day, now you can get Wal-Mart floormats for your car with his image.
Hopefully, there will be talent out there that's watched this all go to shit and won't let our children down.
