That's how you know he doesn't really like her or care for her, how many times have you heard a friend or family member you care about insult themselves? Your first reaction if you truly love or like them is to console them and say otherwise, but if it's someone you dislike or don't care for you just let them insult themselves or (like Eric) you laugh.
