Olson teamed up with one of the biggest psychos on the internet (which is saying something) to upload illegal shit to 8chan to try and own them and instead was found out nearly instantly. I have mixed feelings about Olsen. I think he can be grouped together with people like Lindsay Ellis, Hbomberguy, and Contrapoints in that while they're all serious intellects there's dishonest motivations for much of the content they produce.
In a way they've kind of screwed themselves because obviously Anita Saarkesian and her orbiters are the leaders in this SJW movement, so if they're receiving magnitudes more engagement than she, it must be down to white supremacy or the patriarchy or something.
If you watch certain of Olsen's videos in isolation, eg the 'fievel goes to video game hell' or 'a christmas tale' videos, you learn a lot of critical theory that can be applied to movies or video games in a very short time. Likewise his video on 'why jumpcuts are here to stay' changed my views on youtubers.
He's an insufferable dick, particularly when he starts whinging about how low budget movies have insufficient catering. Yet he's genuinely essential viewing.
It's easy to laugh at someone like Marzgurl or Spoony1, ripping Dan Olsen ups your game.
