I have mixed feelings about Olsen. I think he can be grouped together with people like Lindsay Ellis, Hbomberguy, and Contrapoints in that while they're all serious intellects there's dishonest motivations for much of the content they produce.

In a way they've kind of screwed themselves because obviously Anita Saarkesian and her orbiters are the leaders in this SJW movement, so if they're receiving magnitudes more engagement than she, it must be down to white supremacy or the patriarchy or something.

Likewise his video on 'why jumpcuts are here to stay' changed my views on youtubers.

He's an insufferable dick, particularly when he starts whinging about how low budget movies have insufficient catering. Yet he's genuinely essential viewing.

I don't want to get stuck in the rut of trying to defend Olsen. Rather I want to put him in his proper context. When I write he's an educated guy that has a coherent worldview that's not an endorsement. Rather Olsen, Ellis, Contrapoints and the rest, are in a different league from someone like Saarkeisian, they are actually able to articulate complicated ideas in ways that are easy to understand. Yes some/most of the ideas are bad ones, and need to be challenged, but he's in a different league from a lot of the lolcow's discussed on the farms.

I agree with your point that it's valuable to have someone popularizing other people's ideas and it's all well and good if you like that element of Olson's work. I just don't know how Lindsay Ellis and Dan Olson debating whether the music in a Disney movie is diegetic or non-diegetic makes them particularly smart, much less "serious intellects" of any kind. I personally think they're mostly lazy and pretentious despite the value they might have in introducing people to basic film concepts. They're very good at making themselves sound smart even when all they're doing is overthinking children's entertainment though, so...I guess that's kind of a talent.

I'm the exact opposite; I think he says a lot of rather obvious things using the Hambly Method where he'll stretch out something apparent as far as he possibly can. The Book of Henry "analysis" is probably the peak example of it. "The child is adult-like... and the adults are immature?!?!", phenomenal deep dive into the material there, Dan.

He's certainly competent as a presenter, sure. I have yet to see anything that demonstrates any substantial knowledge of movies or even a unique perspective on anything.
