A google search for gregsmithattorneyslc@gmail.com goes nowhere so that immediately throws this into question. Also, while Gregory Smith is a real attorney in Utah, he appears to be a criminal defense attorney, which would put this WELL outside his area of expertise. Finally, Defamation is very hard to prove, for reasons that letter actually states: They have to prove the defendant knows they're lying. The admin at 8Chan doesn't know he's lying. Fuck, we barely know anything at this point.

What's more, that letter is incredibly poorly drafted. Asking that part of the apology be on twitter with the Hashtag #PeterCoffinWasRight? What the fuck? Plus they switch gendered pronouns at random, and several words are misspelled.

If that isn't the attorney and if Peter is misrepresenting him, he's in deep shit. At BEST he can hope for a bill for the attorney's time. At worst...well, he might wind up spending more of 2015 in jail than Chris.

And if that IS an attorney, well then shit just got real.

I mean, I know people who are pathological liars and create fake online identities for their "significant others" but this is a level of insanity I've never seen. If Peter Coffin's "wife" is actually revealed as fake, he's going to have a psychological break.

If she's real she's already stated she has borderline personality disorder. If that's true the only thing good about peter's life right now might be his sex life. All his strange behavior could be accounted for as the result of manipulation and nagging by his weird girlfriend.

Note: 8chan itself is beyond a shadow of a doubt entirely immune to a bullshit defamation claim based on posts by its users, under § 230 of the Communications Decency Act and basically every case involving that law in the last 10 years or so. Only the individual posters would be liable, and only then if they fit the "actual malice" standard, since they're remarking on content Coffin put up in public entirely of his own volition.

ETA: Also, why would a DUI defense firm be sending a defamation complaint? Is Peter now posing as a lawyer or has he had need of their services in the past? I find it hard to imagine even a low end law firm sending something this amateurish, but who knows?

That said, I agree that it seems very improbable that an actual law firm sent out that email. I'm leaning towards the idea that some troll sent it as a prank, though Peter Coffin has sent out bogus legal emails before.
