Steven Universe - Now a Griefing Thread

Decent film, felt more like a general tv special but I can appreciate the budget being put towards something that was entertaining and gave me a light chuckle or a pang of genuine sadness here and there.

I can accept the retreads if only because it definitely seemed like it was intended to be Spinel's movie, but only left the last act for her to really be explored. That's about the only flaw I'd point out, that and keeping Pink in line with the general tone of 'it's all her fault'.

Don't really know where it's supposed to go from here or even where it CAN go in the span of a single season. In the likelihood that it turns out to be mere padding, I'll comfortably consider this movie to be a satisfying conclusion and go back to watching Mao Mao.

Im assuming the last season will be kinda a mirror of the first: slice-of-life episode wrapping up the side character’s stories and such mixed in with some minor but important main plot stuff. Now obviously your enjoyment of that will depend on how much you liked the slice of life stuff, but I think it’ll be nice to see.

Plus, if you don’t want to see that, you can just consider the last season finalize/movie as the end. This last season will probably essentially be an epilogue.

Viewership numbers are officially out. The movie got 1.57 million viewers during the commercial-free broadcast, a number that the show hasn't really surpassed in recent times (the Wanted and Jungle Moon specials got about 1.52 million viewers and 1.11 million viewers respectively while the rest of S5 barely reached a million).

I know CN is one of the few networks out there that also takes online viewership into consideration, so I hope this sends a "positive" message to CN that the show should stay. I can already imaging the shitstorm that would occur if SU got the same kind of cancellation OK KO got.

CN really took a weird-ass way in brodcasting the show, I remember.

It was done weekly until CN decided to switch that out for a REALLY inconsistent bomb format, so much so that the crew reworked the show's episodes to make them fit the fucking format. With Disney choosing to release new episodes of it's Disney+ shows and Netflix experimenting with weekly releases I can only hope that it can bring SOME normalcy to the release schedule.

Finally had some free time and watched it.

Honestly, I liked it! Spinel was easily the best part of the movie. I loved her voice, her design, her backstory, how she moved, everything about her was awesome. You can tell whoever animated her worked their ass off, because she moves insanely fluidly and her expressions were always great. Also, she fought with a scythe, which automatically makes her cool in my eyes because I'm weak for scythe users in media. She was a treat to watch and I really enjoyed her. Like Alto said, she definitely made this movie go from "it was okay" to "Oh, hey, I actually liked that!"

The rest of it wasn't bad. Greg was great as usual and the fusion between him and Steven was amazing in all of his 80's-Elvis-Rock-God Glory. Another thing that I really liked was how damn good the animation in general was. Everything was really expressive, dynamic, and fluid, and there was a lot more effort put into shading and lighting. It was a real step up from the usual animation and I liked it. I think Takafumi Hori helped work with the art direction for the movie, so the boost in quality is probably like half due to him whipping the crew into shape, with the other half being the boosted budget. The songs were okay, but aside from a handful were mostly forgettable.

In all, it wasn't a bad movie and was definitely better than Season 4 and 5. I probably won't watch it again, but I did enjoy it.

Ngl though

That reprise at the end of the film with the diamonds got me teary eyed. Wonder how good Pink's voice would sound harmonized with the others too. Just the music and how it sounded like an old timey radio song at the end of it was just so good.

It was an okay movie though, I'm more of a music nerd than an animation or film one so I like it mainly for the music sung.

I didn't realize that Charlyne Yi was part of SU. She was a terrible part of House MD... Literally the worst actresses in the history of the show, and they made her a recurring character at the very end, right when the show went to shit... (Coincidence? I think not.)

If Spinel was made to be a court jester how tf was she able to get her hands on a bio weapon?
I asked that question myself actually. You mean to tell me that, after hearing the message, she went to homeworld, grabbed one of the venom injectors (and the scythe) without anyone noticing (or probably caring) and even knows how to use it by making her finger a horn?

It’s already been pointed on Twitter and the like but Spinel has more of an Oswald-like feel to her, even more so when you take Epic Mickey into consideration.
Anyone else seeing all the normies talking about how its based off Cuphead though

In my opinion,Spinel's character designs and her actions in SU the movie are probably similar to Chucky the Fool from Discworld 1 (Video game) .

I think they should have taken written the Diamond Empire as either having some extra redeeming qualities as an institution or at least the "Gems need to consume planets to make more of their kind" should be more key in the final confrontation between Steven/Pink and White. Otherwise, the show more or less made ultra genocidal supervillains get talked into being nice using plot magic.

I liked the movie well enough. Disappointing that it didn't really push for something new, but it's a nice recap of the series up to this point without being just a long clipshow episode. I like it in the same way one could enjoy a Pokemon or Sailor Moon movie. You're not watching it because it's critically good--it's just fun. Spinel was delightful.

The bomb format is fucking awful. There would be literal months between episodes and it would end up being a shitty Townie episode.

Anyways I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. It's only really worth watching for Spinel who pretty much carried the movie on her back. Everything about her was done well and I'm upset we probably won't ever see her again minus some one off cameo. Greg as usual is based and the Steg fusion was amazing. Few nice songs here and there and the animation was spot on but other than that the movie was kind of pointless. For a movie, it felt like nothing of substance happened. It was just retelling us what has already happened and once again taking a gigantic shit on Rose/Pink for like the 50th time. Overall a solid 7/10. It really makes me wonder what they will do in season 6 I mean what is there left?

The "community" is handling the movie well.

Personally I'd gone for the "initiating an apolcalyptic civil war without any long term strategy for peace," being a bigger sin then "personally neglegent of loved ones". Pink was always inconsiderate and shortsighted this doesnt really change anything. It's just an exploration of how Stevens arc is often about wronging the errors of his mother and in doing so validating her virtues.

Really enjoyed Spinel however, her animation style is fun and her endless sense of anger of being abused is suprisingly on key. She's right to be livid and bitter but that doesnt change the fact it's gradually killing her.

Personally, what I find a bit odd about Pink Diamond is how the SU fandom doesn't seem to get is that the pedestal was supposed to be broken, and the whole point of her character was that everyone is idealized and saw her better than what she really was.

Yet, you have people constantly pointing out how "Pink did a lot of questionable things and might just as well be considered the true villain of the show" as some kind of smart observation.

Given, Steven went from completely idolizing her and believing the hype, to accept she abandoned Spinel for 6 thousand years, shows that was the whole point.
