I invite you to take this one level deeper. Feelings come first because, to them, whether they understand their underpinnings or not, perception literally creates reality. Oh no no. You see, asylums back in the day got really little to no funding because of the stigma of mental illness. But due to the lack of understanding, people had to be put somewhere if they were mentally ill and untreatable. Do you resort to charity? The church? Wealthy monarchy?
Fuck no. You put the inmates on display and charge the general public a fee (which pretty much always went into somebody's pocket and not to the care of 'patients', a term which I use very fucking loosely) to watch the crazy from the safety of locked cages.
