Nintendo discussion thread

Lol are you guys seriously having a sperg off in here? That aside Nintendo has been really shit on their hardware as of late but I like the games library they’ve had.

It’s the most solid it’s been in years, and well fuck we have taiko no tatsujin on it.

Although re-released Wii U titles for the switch being priced at the same exact 60 USD price tag is a huge slap in the face to those who were loyal to the company since the Wii U era.

Pikmin is totally not like lemmings or that Krusty Fun House game at all. I kinda like the Gamecube Chibi-Robo game it was different.

Soooo, now my PRO CONTROLLER is drifting too. Fucking Christ Nintendo.

I already had one that did that as well. 🤔

You know it's real bad when fucking Arlo gets upset by it. This is something that has a 99% failure rate on all switch lites.

The man who defended the wii-u for 5 years only to turn around and say it's shit right when NEW PRODUCT TO CONSUME was announced to replace it.

And what's worse is that he defended the wii-u but never got past the tutorial stage for MH3U which outside of Xenoblade Chronicles X was the only other worthwhile game for the system.
lmao, Arlo. He seems to be dropping his fanboy crap as of late, at least. He trashed Mario Kart Tour and outright said exactly what was wrong with it. Not that that's hard to do, the game is practically Final Fantasy ATB levels of garbage. Games you give a 1-year-old child who just likes to press buttons and make things happen. Mario Kart Tour does look pretty on a phablet with a bright OLED screen, but that's about it. You can't even go offroad, it'll just automatically steer you back on-course.

Yeah really, they couldn't even offer like $10 off a downloadable copy to anyone who bought them or the DLC. I'd really like to pick up Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but I bought the Wii U version and its DLC, and it just sucks that I can't even get a discount. It never even gets a discount to half-off, because Nintendo knows Mario Kart games will always sell well.

That battle mode was fucking pathetic and the lack of block fort even in the Deluxe Switch version is a fucking crime on top of making MORE DLC after releasing the Deluxe version which was supposedly the completist of complete. Excessive DLC killed both Mario Kart and CTR for me.

Don't forget that Lamborghini ad or whatever where they added the realistic cars that completely clash with the game's art style.

I never really cared for Mario Maker, because the whole basis of it is reducing mario to a series of assets when there hasn't really been a true sequel on par with the original 4 games yet. In general it made mario feel soulless this was especially true after they bumrushed 3 NSMB games within a few years time and none of them are really fondly remembered.

I can kind of get behind that. Course World is almost universally shit, with the better ones just being puzzles. So many high-ranked levels are autoscrollers that like, play a song or something for Reddit upvotes and Youtube views, and so many random courses are just from kids scribbling a thousand enemies on the screen and not much else. So few people attempt to make courses that you'd actually find in a Mario game, and the ones I made barely get any plays due to just getting lost in the shuffle. Once you see the few gimmicks Mario Maker lets you make, it's easy to just shelve the game for good. If you want good custom courses, look up SMW romhacks made with Lunar Magic.

Since you mentioned NSMB, I once read something (so don't take this to the bank) about how the NSMB games were developed by a B-team, or like new developers or something at Nintendo. You can kind of use those games as a litmus test to separate the sycophants from everyone else. The only NSMB game I'd ever go back to is New Super Luigi, since that was actually fun.

Tropical Freeze makes me wonder why they were able to make 3 classics during the SNES era but struggled to crap out a single DKC game within the same amount of time. More work was involved with the SNES games because while everything was 3d rendered they had to convert shit into sprites and early texturing and modeling software was not as easy to use as today. Like they could have done two new DKC games for the wii-u at least.

Rare made the first three DKC games. That's why they were good.

NSMB2 was used to train new people for future games. that does not apply to the other titles however.

I don't get why you're complaining about 8 Deluxe's DLC, BOTW Link's the only thing that's been added, and it was released as a free update. I fucking love Mario Kart 8, but I do understand where you're coming from with 8 for the most part, however this one complaint is really fucking spergy.

I was a Nintendo kid. The SNES is still one of my favorite consoles. I started to stop giving a damn about Nintendo around the time the GameCube's lifespan was ending. They just seemed to focus entirely on gimmicks instead of putting out a quality console that could compete with the others on the market.

They also seemed to have forgotten that today, video games are no longer seen as something only kids enjoy. Nothing wrong with a lighthearted game, but when the others offer a much wider variety of choices, they become the preferable option.

Nintendo relies far too heavily on it's own brands, and third party developers are left in the wayside. If you're not into Mario, Zelda, Pokemon or Smash, your choices are more limited.

I truly believe that the Nintendo Switch is the best thing Nintendo has made in the last decade or so, barring the online being trash, because it has some level of unique function with it being a workable portable system in addition to being a normal console. I want them to continue to expand and improve on this concept.

I generally don't care about the other consoles having better specs because to me they're just shitty PCs with some exclusives that most of which I don't care about and the rest I can probably find on PC eventually especially as Japanese developers have started to realize that PC is an actual platform. I don't buy that many games anymore so having a wider library doesn't fully matter to me and I can find plenty to play with my Switch (or any Nintendo console) and my PC.

I'm not even this massive Nintendo fan, I only truly care about Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, and Smash as far as series go with moderate interest in BOTW styled Zelda. I liked Splatoon 1 a lot and thought it was fun, though I unironically find using the wii u gamepad more comfortable due to gyro working so smoothly with it over a normal controller and normal console aim is shit so I couldn't get into Splatoon 2 very much.

Their online is embarrassingly garbage though, like I was eh with it because it was free back in the Wii days, but this shit is just terrible on the Switch.

I don't think as many people let Nintendo get away with everything as much as people like to claim they do. Nintendo obviously buys out revewers, but everybody does and review sites aren't worth shit. Most everybody has agreed that Link's Awakening is disappointing and Nintendo has made a lot of mistakes with the Switch.

Joy-cons were a huge mistake. I know most people were hoping the new Switch model would fix it but it's somehow worse. Switch Lites should have been recalled (or never released in the first place.) Everybody who bought them and has Joy-con issues should be refunded.

That said, in the future I'm forgoing a Sony console and going with only Nintendo and PC.

I still play Splatoon 2 regularly, I just hate how often I get disconnections and how ass the meta got when they released MPU. Get rid of snipers, MPU, Clash Blaster and nerf the dick out of the Booyah Bomb and Splatoon 3 should be set.

Who else is looking forward to Animal Crossing New Horizons?

Nintendo is one of those companies I have very mixed feelings on. I don't hate them outright like I do Electronic Arts or BioWare, but I'm not a diehard fan of them like I am with Rockstar or Capcom.

As a guy who grew up on the Playstation consoles and generally likes edgy M-rated games, I'll admit that Nintendo is a company that I utterly detested throughout the Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U eras. They had piss poor third-party support and relied too much on kiddie games. The only Nintendo exclusives that I actually liked from those days were those Resident Evil Chronicles rail shooter games. Everything else that may have started on the Gamecube or Wii (RE4, REmake, and House of the Dead: Overkill) eventually got ported to other consoles.

But given Sony's new censorship policies contrasted with Nintendo's loosened censorship policies and the Switch going out of its way to court third-party developers, I think Nintendo is slowly getting better as a company.

Their biggest issue now is the fact that they're so reliant on gimmicks for their consoles, they end up nerfing the hardware too much. I blame that on the surprise success of the Wii, which won the 7th Gen console wars right out of the gate solely because it was cheap and had a gimmick that was fairly novel for the time.

If Nintendo can drop the gimmicks and focus on a console that can compete with Sony in terms of both hardware and third-party support, they can probably win me over. Bonus points if they can make a dark and edgy M-rated franchise in house (aside from Bayonetta, which was originally a third-party franchise)

I still don't like their team of lawyers constantly screwing over the emulation community though.

If the pro controller has issues then I'm pissed, Xenoblade Switch pro controller is my favorite controller right next to my Dark Blue Transparent Special Edition PS4 Controller.

These are things I treasure, things I plan to keep decades upon decades. I still have both working versions of the NES zapper despite only owning duck hunt.

I also got the Killscreen in Duck Hunt so I can tell people that I've beaten Duck Hunt.

Mario took me like 1 hour to beat, World Class Track Meet took me around 30-45 minutes to beat, Duck Hunt took 3 hours to get to Level 99 and then beat it so that it will roll over to Level 000 which is the kill screen where everything is bugged so you'll automatically get a game over. But Yeah I wanted to beat everything on that Triple Cart.

Weakest of Weaksauce killscreens is the NES Donkey Kong one. The game just stops and freezes. The Arcade version has an entire tapestry of bugs and glitches that descends upon you in a spectacle. Arcade Donkey Kong and Pac-Man have legendary kill screens.

What do you mean
I started a new playthrough of BotW for what has to be the 4th time (idk why but I keep coming back to it every 6 months or so, it's not the perfect game but I adore it) and I noticed Link does this exact controlling hiccup that happened with my original pair of Joycons where if I tap downwards on the left stick and then let go, he'll just keep walking very slowly with no input. It's more annoying than it sounds, especially when you're trying to fight enemies or are right next to a cliff.

And I double tested. It's not doing that with my other, newer Joycon pair nor my Gamecube controller, so my Pro is definitely drifting. Which sucks considering the damn thing cost more than a brand new game ffs.

Well, that's never gonna happen. You're simply not their audience, and they'll lose money chasing you.

Sad, but true.

Shame that Sony's gone woke and PC gaming is expensive as fuck.

Although, they might not lose money dropping the gimmicks and competing with Sony on a more even footing since Microsoft is likely going to be dropping out of the console wars depending on how their upcoming Xbox Scarlett does. If the market is less crowded, Nintendo might stand to diversify their market and dropping the gimmicks.

Depending on how often you use your PC I don't think it is that expensive or hard to justify a reasonable gaming PC that is comparable or better then consoles. I mean most people have a computer, add a few hundred extra dollars and suddenly it is a gaming PC and you can always make it better whenever you want. Just my opinion, if you're exceptional tight on money then maybe I can see your point, but I've never found PC gaming to be super expensive unless I was just plain lazy and didn't feel like installing anything.

I also still don't see the Switch as a gimmick personally, to me the Wii and Wii U are gimmicks because they're trying to turn control schemes on their head for the hell of it, the Switch is a fairly normal console with a practical and useful function that works reasonably well in it being a portable hybrid system. It actually confuses me how normal the Switch is overall after owning a Wii and a Wii U. The Joy Cons can be somewhat gimmicks with their weird quirky functions that no one uses and Labo is obviously a gimmick, but the Switch as a whole is fairly normal console functional wise. That is why I believe the Switch should be updated overtime like the Playstation with a Switch 2 and etc, but I am almost positive Nintendo won't do that which is a shame.

Sony hasn't gone woke though.

Nintendo games are among the best. I really like what they do. The things I liked about their games in the 80s and 90s are still present today, which is great. Something about the way they polish their games is hard to find with other developers. Though I've been pleased to see Sony stepping up their game over the last two generations.

Microsoft... what are you doing?

Also if you're interested in game design or hope to be a developer yourself someday, make sure you check out Iwata Asks. It's a treasure trove of immensely valuable knowledge and experience.

Yeah well Iwata ruled under multiple weak Nintendo systems that had minimal support. I wouldn't take his word as gospel.

They're not gonna drop the "gimmicks", because they don't have the money to do so. Their devs love them too much too, so I don't think that's happening.
