So, anyone get to keep/lose any life long friends along the way?
Growing up, none of my friends were into Pokemon. That meant I had no access to trade evolutions. Gengar existed only in my dreams and Scizor was never gonna happen. So when I first played through FireRed I decided to give Drowzee a try because I knew I wouldn't be able to get Alakazam but I still really wanted a Psychic type.
I named her Ellie. She wasn't as strong as something like Kadabra, and I fucking hated that. This was back when all I cared about offensive ability, when the concept of tanking was non-existent to me and every move had to be damage-dealing. But the more I used Ellie, the more I kinda liked watching my foes struggle to KO this beefy half-elephant in between getting put to sleep with Hypnosis. Then she evolved into Hypno, wiped the floor with Koga, got Calm Mind after Sabrina, gave Blaine the bird as his Fire attacks struggled to put a dent in her, and saved my ass in the final battle against my rival.
Reflect to boost defense. Hypnosis until the opponent fell asleep. Calm Mind to boost special attack and defense. Dream Eater to deal damage and regain health. It was so fun. So unlike all my other Pokemon experiences, which were just spam the highest power attacking move until I won.
Ellie had gone from this "last one picked for dodgeball" Pokemon I only kept around because I couldn't get something better, to my favorite team member. I even liked her more than my Venusaur. When they announced Diamond and Pearl I was so excited to bring her into the new games and keep playing with her in a new world, on a new system, and unleash her trollish, tanky tactics onto a new generation.
And then my mom accidentally included my FireRed cartridge in some old games I wanted to sell at a garage sale.
Godspeed Ellie, whenever you are. You opened up my idiot child mind to different play styles.
