They made their choice and in doing so completely destroyed its moderators credibility and power. The users throwing the temper tantrum broke numerous rules yet not only were they not punished in the end they ultimately got what they demanded. Era now exists in a state where privilege determines power. On this site, just putting ads on thread lists and the main page (not in actual threads where 80% of traffic is because if adsense robots detect porn alongside ads you get flagged), when our userbase was about 1/10th the size it is now, we made about $200.

Multiply that by the fact they can use adsense in threads, multiply that by the significant userbase, and you're looking at several thousand dollars a month at the bare minimum just by ads. Now add in ad-free premiums.

I hear you, but I have to ask, how many years ago was your ad test though? Was adblockers mainstream back then ? Were mobile app as big as they are now ? Google adsens and Amazon adsens aren't as generous as before because advertisers know internet forums aren't the big fishes they used to be. Reddit, twitter, Facebook, youtube, mobile apps, is where it's at now.

I also doubt ads revenues scales as easily nowadays. Resetera might have 10 000 daily visitors, but I doubt they gain 2x times more than if it was 5000, for example. From what I can grasp and asking people around, it seems a bit more tricky than that.

Now, you're right it must be around 5000 a month before tax, which is already a big deal, let's not lie. I'd dump my job in a second for that (and the free time).

Drivebytrolling is also right about shady deals Cerium might pass to allow people to shill for their products. That might explain why the forum is Nintendo biased to ridiculous degrees. We also have to put random donations in the equation. I'm sure some bored wealthy members give money monthly, outside of the premium fee.

It's quite telling no Resetera members really ask for receipts, especially when half of the members feel like they're in a heavy handed dictatorship. Cerium makes x000 a month from their traffic and doesn't even pay mods a little something or give back to the community ?
