Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

And the glitches just keep on comin' ladies and gentlemen. This one's similar to the "evolved egg hatch" glitch but with even more practical use.
Can also be useful for other gender-based evos like Meowstic. Also something something troon joke.

I think it's such bullshit that in raids they can still break out and escape after a hellacious battle. If I waste the ten minutes killing some giant fucker i'm entitled to catching it.

Or ya know, at least make the prizes at least better - Like if you fail to catch the big ones, you at least get a better reward.

...

Now that I think about it, it's kinda weird that they didn't make a specific kind of ball for dynamax catching, you think that would be something interesting to get in the game.

I don't know the exact parameters so don't quote me on this, but I think it's a near if not guaranteed catch on most raids if you're the one hosting it, with the only exception to this rule being special G-max event raids like the Snorlax one currently. I know this for sure since I failed to catch one G-Snorlax I hosted, but any other time I've caught raid mons I hosted with very low catch rate balls without fail, like for example I hunted for a hidden ability Hatterene to catch in a Dream Ball (which for all intents and purposes has the same catch rate of a plain ball) and must've caught and reset over a dozen times both with G-max and Dynamax forms and I didn't fail the capture once.

With that in mind it kind of makes the raid system lopsided, because why go through the trouble of going to someone else's raid when your catch odds are significantly butchered compared to the host's?

It wouldn't affect Meowstic, it only affects Pokémon that can be one gender as a pre-evo, but can only be the opposite gender as the evolution. Salandit and Combee are the two main examples of this, they can be male, but if they evolve through the egg glitch, they become female. I think if you do it with an egg with a female Kirlia as well, evolving it into a Gallade, and turning it into male. Meowstic can be male or female, the only difference is the form, so Espurr evolving through the egg wouldn't do anything different.

I seriously think Pokémon main games should have stopped after B2 and W2 at least temporarily? I mean they could potentially add new pokemon via the anime
would they be added to later games at some point, or are they just there to tease the player with something they can't have?

More than just a break, Game Freak needs a product that isn’t Pokémon. They’ve had three games I can think of since the days of Platinum that weren’t Pokémon - Harmoknight, Tembo the Badass Elephant, and Little Town Hero. None of which made much of an impression except for LTH, which was seen as a direct cost of Pokémon funds.

Game Freak are the undisputed kings of the monster collector genre, but that’s all they’re known for or, to put it bluntly, good at. They don’t even seem to have a network of experience for when they need to do online or something. That’s why I want Nintendo or someone else to scoop them up, so the company can cover them between Pokémon releases.

They have 18 games that aren't Pokémon under their belt (Archive), and none of them are particularly popular. The only ones you might hear about here and there are Pulseman and Drill Dozer. And their latest attempt was an outright failure. Considering this, I don't think Game Freak has any chances outside of Pokémon.

I've pretty much finished the game (aside from going to kick the shit out of Hop one last time), and so, late to the party as ever, here are my thoughts. I'll break this down into good and bad like everyone else has:

The Good

The Pokemon - I really love the new Pokemon this gen. I think this is probably the strongest new wave we've had in a long time. For the first time ever, my final team consisted entirely of Pokemon from the region the game is set in. If you're curious, my final team was Cinderace (first time I've ever picked a fire starter on my first playthrough), Hatterene, Boltund, Corviknight, Drednaw and Obstagoon (technically Zigzagoon and Linoone are Galar forms rather than new Pokemon, but Obstagoon's totally new, so I'm comfortable saying it's a Galar 'mon). Despite the Dexit controversy, I never personally felt like I was missing out on anything because there's still a good variety in the game, but I can see how some folks might. The fact you can catch loads of great Pokemon early on is really good too.

Pokemon appearing in the overworld - This was one of my favourite things in Let's Go Eevee and I was so happy to see it return here. I thought it would only happen in the Wild Area, but it happens everywhere. It's one of those features where I'm going to miss it when I go back to play the older games.

Leveling of wild Pokemon - The fact wild Pokemon scale closer to your team's level was so refreshing to see. Not only did it make late game replacements to your team much more viable because the Pokemon you caught were actually worth a damn, but it also meant the few times I had to grind, it didn't feel nearly as tedious because I netted quite a lot of EXP from taking on strong Pokemon. On the same note...

EXP Candies - Again, this made late replacements to your team much less of a chore to raise. I had to switch out the fairy type slot in my team twice - I started with Eevee, hoping to evolve it into Sylveon, but it was the special Eevee you get for having a Let's Go Eevee save file, and I realised slightly late it didn't evolve. I've documented my woes with Galarian Rapidash further upthread, so I eventually settled on Hatterene, but the one I had in the PC had been caught a while ago at that point, so it was really underleveled. Thankfully, EXP candies meant I could get onto the Seventh Gym without too much dawdling.

Design of some of the towns and locations - I absolutely loved Postwick, Slumbering Weald, Ballonlea and Circhester. They haven't revealed which real-world locations the towns are based on yet (not that I'm aware of anyway), but Ballonlea felt a lot like the New Forest (one of my favourite places in England) and if Circhester isn't based on Bath, I'll be very surprised. Postwick perfectly captured the sleepy English countryside, and I wish more of the region could've followed suit. Beautiful stuff.

The Neutral Zone

This is stuff I was meh about:

Difficulty - Yes, the game's too easy, but I wasn't that fussed because if I'm honest, the last Pokemon game I had trouble with was Soul Silver and that was more because of a lack of EXP and endless grinding rather than genuine difficulty. I still didn't white out until I reached Sabrina. There were some battles I had trouble with in Shield, the most prominent of which was Opal's Togekiss which came dangerously close to sweeping my team. Zacian also one-shotted several of my Pokemon before I took it down, so I will give the game credit for those. The league was a joke though - not even the Kalos league healed your team between every round.

The Wild Area - There are things I like about the Wild Area. It's fun to free roam around a huge environment, and the variety of Pokemon on offer is incredible. I finally caught myself a Steelix after all these years. But there's not enough content to keep things going, and the environment just isn't that interesting when you get right down to it. I think if more minigames had been thrown in, or they'd made the environment a bit more varied and interesting, it really could've been something special.

Story - The story's shit, but I don't play Pokemon for the story, so I didn't really care.

The Bad

The Galar Region - Despite the praises I sung of some of towns/locations above, the Galar region is my least favourite Pokemon region to date, for one simple reason - it feels small. It feels like there's a lot less exploring to do and the way the region's set out is really weird. While most regions go in a circle or a line, Galar is more like a half-pipe. You go up one side of the map, then come back down and go up the other side. It's a bold attempt to try something new, but it ends up feeling repetitive. I also didn't like the overall atmosphere in Galar much, but maybe that's because I'm from England myself and it felt too familiar. After the Alola region (which I loved), this felt like a serious step down in terms of design and has supplanted Kalos as my least favourite region. No more European-based regions please Nintendo, it's just too depressing. Also, England does not have a (sand) desert and I hate desert areas, so this would've been the perfect game to leave it out of.

Graphics/Animations - I'm not a graphics whore, and I usually don't mind too much if there's the odd animation glitch, but I agree with everyone else that this game feels unpolished in that department. Characters will glide to a halt rather than coming out of their step which got distracting after a while, battle animations are very repetitive and the game looks... muddier than Let's Go Eevee which felt much more bright and cheerful by comparison. Also, the way Zacian turns around in that cutscene that was posted here a while back is fucking hilarious. I don't know how that made it into the finished game.

The Postgame - Maybe I was spoiled by Rainbow Rocket and the Delta Episode, but my idea of a postgame is not a walking tour of all the previous gyms with some lame Dynamax battles. However, I will admit I laughed my arse off at the appearance of Sordward and Shielbert (mostly Sordward), and I sort of like how the box legendary is withheld until right at the end of the game, so I will give it some credit.

Dynamaxing - I didn't like this feature at all. It was fun the first couple of times, and watching a Dynamaxed Pokemon explode once it's been defeated is satisfying, but it got old fast. Mega Evolutions did the concept of Pokemon temporarily getting more powerful much better. Dynamaxing feels like a step back and I hope this is the last we see of it.

Conclusions

So those were my thoughts that probably no-one cares about at this point. I did enjoy the game and I'm not sorry I bought it, but it wasn't what it could've been and it's my least favourite Pokemon game I've played recently. To me, this game is sort of like Stranger Things Season 3 - not a jump the shark disaster, but a step down in terms of what's come before. I hope the downward trend doesn't continue, but I fear it may yet do so.

Ah well, back to my Omega Ruby playthrough.

Is that even still alive? I hear that Nintendo DMCA'd it and killed the devs, and even then most of the earlier models weren't updated past their cube models. Is there a good server with a large playerbase?

You can still get it through the Technic Pack as Pixelmon Revolution last I checked - it's pretty damn fun to play if you want to try something different from vanilla Minecraft. I'm kinda sad none of the music made for the original mod has been included though because a lot of them were absolute bangers.

Indeed. When I get back home I can provide you with the launcher download I use, granted you don’t already have it.
It’s actually kind of fun watching these otherworldly creatures become subject to Minecraft physics. I’ve seen a caterpie get struck by lightning and catch on fire once.

If there's one saving grace of this gen, it's the new pokemon. My team was Cinderace, Frosmoth, Alcremie, Grapploct, Runerigus and Dracovish. In the process of levelling (I kept a full team from the start, and swapped out Pokemon as I levelled) I also used Boltund and Obstagoon. The only Pokemon I ever had on my team from earlier gens was Noibat(and arguably Zigzagoon). Even the fossil have their fans (like me). The only outright flop is Eiscue.

I think the new Pokemon are a big part of why Swsh is in 'You are on this council, but we do not grant you the rank of master' territory for a lot of people. Nobody wants to disavow Snom.

The only outright flop is Eiscue.
Eiscue character design wise is pretty gross but gameplay design wise is pretty interesting. He can safely belly dance in tank form and then get broken out into his sonic speed form and sweep pretty hard, his only real issue is that whoever designed Nu Daramnitan has never heard of balance and designed it to be as cancerous as possible and they both compete for the same mono-ice physical sweeper slot.

Galar's roster is, more mixed than usual for me. It feels like for every new mon I like, there's another that feels boring and uninspired. And I say this as someone who's extremely lenient with Pokemon designs, I can count the ones I legitimately hate on one hand (Cinderace now taking that "top" spot, already disliked it by default but the blatant favoritism it got over the other starters is infuriating).

On the other hand, 3 Galar mons have become new favorites of their types for me.

Centiskorch is my new favorite Fire type. It's a giant centipede on fire, that's badass as hell. Bug types always come out swinging with the coolness factor, and Centiskorch is no exception.

Hatterene is my new favorite Fairy, technically my first as I didn't really have one yet and just had Togekiss as a placeholder. The fact that she's actually a midget with a giant hair "dress" is interesting, but what I love most of all is the fact she will beat the ever-loving shit out of you if you so much as shed a tear of emotion and is so feared many call her The Forest Witch. Now that is how you do a truly fair folk Fairy. None of that pretty flowers and hearts weak sauce.

And finally, my new favorite Steel type and favorite mon in all of Galar, Copperajah. Elephants have always been one of my favorite animals, and I've been wanting one as a Pokemon for a long time. Not a dwarf tire thing, not a pig/mammoth hybrid (though Donphan and Mamoswine are awesome in their own right), a genuine big-ass elephant, and Copperajah delievered. Plus, with its lore of coming from what can only be Pokemon's India-based region in the past, I've been getting hefty Age of Empires nostalgia.

This is probably the worst aspect of the game for me. You're not given room to actually explore much of anything outside of the wild area. And even once you learn that, you find yourself simply running laps just seeing if anything different has popped up since your last trek over.

Putting in more caves or making the Dynamax "dens" something you could go into and find stuff would have been a major plus. As is now the entire game outside the Wild Area just feels Point A to Point B. Splitting up the regions with two or three similar open field areas would have been a huge plus.

Mawile cries in the distance
I don't count the retconned Fairy types. And Mawile is questionable as a Fairy type to begin with. It feels more like a Dark type given the lore of its yokai inspiration (a woman with a gluttonous mouth on the back of her head that grumbles spiteful things to her) and they just made it Fairy because it looks somewhat cutesy.

Honestly I question it’s steel typing more. Like, I know it’s because the mouth and teeth are supposed to be metal, but it doesn’t come across in the design at all. Dark/fairy would have been an interesting typing for it.
