Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

What is the thing that got you in the Pokemon
Got a DS with a flashcart and 200+ pirated titles for my birthday. I’d played a few minutes of a gen 4 title at some random family friend’s house a year or two before then, so I like to joke that it was fate that I inevitably stumbled upon White. Really, I think I was just trying to go through all the games on the cart in order and White’s icon happened to be near the top. I probably would have moved on to other games if I hadn’t immediately fallen in love with the big scary dragon on the title screen and the cute animals you had to choose from five minutes in. (I chose the pig and loved him dearly.)

It may have also helped that we had a huge stack of original cards from pokemania, as well as a comparably-old Psyduck plush, at home thanks to a family member’s previous obsession. Maybe this is just genetic. Who knows!

and your favorite Pokemon overall?
I will cry if you make me choose

I don't remember getting into Pokemon. One day Pokemon just existed everywhere when it wasn't the day before, and my older brother was playing Pokemon Blue and I had see an episode of the show on TV.

Ninetales. It's perfect in its simplicity, but complex in its subtlety (but unironically).

Getting both FireRed and LeafGreen as a tyke for my clam shell GameBoy Advance. To this day, I always go back to them if I want to refresh myself to play Pokémon again.

Your favorite Pokemon overall?
Cinccino. Wanted a name for GameFAQs back in the day, and went with Minccino because it fit better alliteratively. Water is my favorite type, but when it comes to a personal mon (or something I'd love to have irl) it would be Cinccino. Total cutie of a mon, and I enjoy the niche success I get from using it competitively.

Probably the first time I've ever heard that. How?
Sony consoles are very popular in my country for whatever reason. I know several 2000's kids who had PS2s, PS3s and PSPs growing up but not a single one had a DS, Wii, Gamecube or even Xbox. The only non-Sony console that was popular in my area was the 3DS, but that was a couple of years later.

The most popular monster catcher here was a PSP game, Invizimals. It was much more advertised than Pokemon and had more merchandise like toys, cards, tazos and collectible stickers. I was an Invizimals fan before I was a Pokemon fan, when I first saw Salandit it reminded me of Griffonator Pup:

Mincinno was my first shiny, I caught it while grinding for Elesa's gym in White. I had already found a shiny Lickitung and Chimchar in Battle Revolution but you can't catch Pokemon in those games so they don't really count.

I saw Charizard on a box when visiting a game shop. Pokemania hadn't taken hold yet but the magazines had been hyping up the games and anime. I picked it up, picked Charmander and remember how excited I was to show my friends how it changed.

Butterfree was my favourite from Gen 1. It's still a good design now and it's clones are usually pretty fun. Giving it Compound eyes so it had a point was nice.

I always report videos that have gay shit in the thumb nail or title, make sure everyone reading this goes to the video reports it for Sexual content and write about how it's about exposing kids to sex, it's a kids' game and faggot shit should never have anything to do with it.
Dangerously based, I got sick of the troons after they started in with sylveon and hatterine being trans icons because of their coloration.

Thing that got me into Pokemon was the cartoon. I was already heavily watching Saturday morning cartoons and I got hooked in immediately. I was the kid that wanted all the toys that came with shows - though my Mom and Dad made me pay for what I wanted myself so I usually only got one or two things per. I heard from older kids at school that not only the Pokemon Red and Blue games were a thing, but Pokemon Yellow was coming out and it would be like playing through the show with my favorite characters! So I saved up and got it, and that was that.

Fave overall is Misdreavus/Mismagius. I lucked into catching one with a modest nature when I first played through D/P/P and it ANNIHILATED everything in its path even through the Elite 4 and Cynthia. I've loved it ever since.

I’ve always been a tabletop autist and loved the TCG because it was simple enough to get my friends and siblings to play with. I liked it better than magic because up until gym challenge it was easier to find packs at my local target than it was to find magic, which was around the time that their standard was the masques block and invasion.

The troon that went REEEEEEEEE LE CHIKORITA HATERS ARE LE HECKING SEXIST made this absolute slop

I'm pretty sure chikorita gets hate not because of sexism, but because of how it sucks for every single major fight, and even minor fights like with team rockets poison types. I might be sexist idk.

Also has anyone else realized that grass types in general aren't that great (at least in casual playthroughs), despite being one of the 3 core types, especially in the first 3 gens. With bad movepools, bad coverage, bad defensive type, alright offenses but a lot of types also resist grass. It definitely has gotten better as the gens went on, with better moves and better pokemon, but it still falls behind the other 2 elemental types.

It might be one of the few times where a type is way better competitively than in a casual playthrough, cuz grass types are pretty good in a competitive setting. But as someone who almost never plays competitively, who really just needs attacking moves for STAB and coverage and maybe one or two status or boosting moves, grass pales in comparison to fire and water, in my opinion at least.

I've noticed. Grass-types have a lot of bad match-ups, a lot of them tend to have nothing but Grass and Normal moves, and the types of stall or support tactics that usually make them good in competitive aren't efficient or useful for casual story mode play. If you actually go through and rank the starters in each game based on how efficiently they'll get you through the story, the Water starter often the best choice in most games, and the Grass starter the worst choice. One Youtuber who does in-game tier lists makes it almost a running gag to mention that Grass is ass and that contrary to how a lot of people feel about wanting all the starter types on your team, you probably don't need a Grass-type (but you'll always want a Water-type).

I once saw this page from a Gumball comic posted somewhere that I saved. The author must have also noticed the type discrepancy, because they directly reference it in their Pokemon parody.

Sceptile is a good grass type starter

Prove me wrong
Depends on what our standards are for good. It's fast and decently powerful, and it's got some good type match-ups for Hoenn given the Rock Gym at the start and all the Water-types you'll be fighting late in the game, so that all makes it good enough for a starter Pokemon. Its RSE movepool is basically just Grass and Normal moves and some middling TM coverage, but it's much better in ORAS. But overall it's probably the least good Hoenn starter for getting through the story quickly, since Blaziken is pretty powerful and Fire/Fighting gives it some good coverage by default, even against the Water-types given several of them are part Dark or Ice, and Swampert is the best of the three since Water/Ground is an amazing type combo, it's bulky enough with that type that its mediocre speed doesn't matter much, and there's no Hoenn specialists for its one weakness (Grass, ironically).

>Rock Slide Tomb + Earthquake
>Two TMs that wrecks everything it's weak against

<middling TM coverage
wat
You don't get the TM for Earthquake until just before the last Gym. And almost every starter learns Earthquake, Even Meganium gets Earthquake and I don't see anyone saying it saves it. If your starter's one good coverage TM is Earthquake that you don't get until the game is close to the end then yeah, that's kind of iffy.
>Rock Tomb
Ah, yes, Rock Tomb. Because that's what I want. A 50 base power move with 80% accuracy and 10 PP. I don't think there's a greater example of mediocrity. That's so middling they had to buff literally every single one of its stats in Gen VI. A super-effective Rock Tomb hits for less damage than a neutral Leaf Blade with STAB. Fuck, it hits for less damage than a full-power Return. You can throw it on Grovyle for a while to use against Bug and Flying-types since you get it so early (from Roxanne), but what's the use case in the long run, making sure you OHKO Masquerain?

Absorb is its best stab move until level 29 in gen 3 and even then it pales to what Swampert and Blaziken are doing. You know, things like 'natural eq, water/ground typing with no serious grass types, and being able to run EQ/Surf/Ice beam' or 'Fire/fighting with enough speed to make it count'

Damn, I always forget to look through what level they learn things by level up. Yeah, your only STAB being 20 BP until you're over 3 Gyms in is pretty bad.

But since I've been saying mean things about Grass-types, I'll give a positive. I used the in-game trade Lilligant in my last playthrough of Black and she was great in both the story and Battle Subway Super Doubles. She actually, literally gets nothing but Grass moves, but her Special Attack is so high that she can still just melt anything not double-resistant to Grass with Energy Ball and Petal Dance. And since she's got room on her moveset anyway, you can give her Giga Drain to use on weak targets and the extra healing can be quite nice.
