I said this before, and I'll say it again: My favorite moment of the entire Sequel Trilogy, hands down, is the Finn and Poe escape in The Force Awakens. That moment made me like those characters immediately.
While not a particularly well executed moment, or one that I even particularly enjoyed watching when first seeing the movie, in hindsight I think the Finn vs Kylo fight was probably the real last dying gasp of the franchise before it violently shat itself to death.
An ex stormtrooper, the lowest of the low and a joke both in and out universe, insanely out of his league, confused and terrified and not knowing what the fuck to do, who has spent the entire movie trying to run away from this fight he knows he cannot win, finds himself standing between an enraged sith warrior and the woman he loves who is lying unconscious on the ground before him.
Despite knowing how utterly boned he is and how all hope is lost, he fires up his stolen lightsaber, something he has no semblance of training for, and charges in to a fight he knows he cannot win because after everything he has been through and all he has been running from, he knows it is the right thing to do....
....then he gets unceremoniously shunted aside so that a mary sue can prove she is the bestest and strongerest jedi ever, and he is then casually discarded into the "dumb and goofy black sidekick" bin
