Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

So, apparently Galenkin (the guy behind steamspy) put out saying how in 2019 steam didnt get many new games, thus seems he wants to imply this is a sign of Epic kicking steams ass and becomin actual competition
"Restaurant A only has one type of burger! Restaurant B has more than that, therefore they win!"

"Well, Restaurant A uses 100% black angus beef and make their own buns from scratch in the kitchen, and their servers and cooks are all state certified with food handlers permits. Restaurant B uses cheap ground chuck and gets day old buns on discount from a thrift bakery, and most of their employees are crack addicts and don't even wash their hands."

"THEY STILL HAVE MORE THEY WIN!"

Edit: Not to mention it's not even true. Even without the shit asset flips and meme games Steam has a much larger rate of new games coming out than Epic does, largely because on Steam you can literally just pay a fee to market your game, whereas Epic has much more stringent standards. Don't get me wrong, I hate the load of shit theat plops itself onto Steam, but I'd rather have to sift through 1000 shit games to find 100 good games than take Epic's tiny library. Fuck, I've outright found fun free games on Steam made by devs who just wanted to make a damn game!

Galenkin: "Steam's platform is filled with nothing but shovelware bloating the store!"
(Steam removes shovelware in order to stop and decrease bloat)
Galenkin: "LOL look at how little games Steam's been getting this year, must be due to Epic creating competition."

Apparently water is wet.
I find it fascinating that he is blocking people now, usually he tries to half-ass it with an excuse and ignores them (He did that to me a couple times, when I had a Twitter)

Adding this in:

Apparently Tim Sweeney is blocking people who are critical of EGS.

You gotta love that one of the biggest cheerleaders for that platform has absolutely no ability to defend it on its own terms and has to pay the dumbasses that believe criticizing the platform in any way is racism to do it for him.

I mean, I cannot really fault them on this one. If im not mistaken, Platinum has been kinda struggling even with Nier Automata and Astral Chain specially since the later is just for the Nintendo Switch.
Nier is owned by Square Enix and Astral Chain bombed. Platinum just helped develop Nier Automata and square fronted loaded some of the development costs, but platinum doesn't have a stake in the IP and doesn't get royalities or w/e.

Platinum doesn't seem to be able to properly make an action game without some form of major oversight at this point. If it's entirely in house they make retarded decisions about the gameplay or decide to make shit QTE Movies. They really need someone to hold their hand so the project turns out well. There's also the fact that they can't seem to do proper level design and make most of the levels hallways.

Valve had 30,000 games/DLC/Whatever as of 2019. As of today, Epic has 232. Valve has 100 times the content Epic has with more features.

The guy who runs Steam spy is ass blasted steam never hired him and is a whimpering simp of a human being and is perpetually asshurt at Steam because Steam keeps countering his metrics.

So i found this kind of quote on plebbit of all places:
Kids being bullied in school for having the default stuff, so much so that the term default has become an insult.

Children are manipulated into giving away their parents money, but fortnite and streamlined that shit into an art-form so finely tuned and effective that it makes 80's toy companies weep into their check book.

So i did a bit of sleuthing, including asking a few acquintances who are middle school teachers. According to them this is actually rather common and a relatively recent phenomenon, while the "default" doesn't appear as an insult here, they do say that kids are often bullied for not having the newest skin, premium stuff in Fortnite and especially so for not playing it which is seen as if an outcast. Skins are seen as far more important bragging rights than being good at the game in particular.

I wonder how Timbo Sweeney would feel about the fact that likely a significant portion of that income is from kids being bullied to buy shit on Fortnite, since there's no way that EGS itself with Fortnite removed is profitable.

Not give a single fuck and cry how Valve is greedy with their 30% cut and how people should think about the poor devs. Ignoring that from said 30% you as a customer can use various payment methods that Valve makes sure are covered, while Epic essentially says "fuck you puppet" and makes you pay an additional 5% for using something besides Paypal/Your credit card.

This isn't new. Its basically just 'bully the poor kid'. I got bullied for going to a rich school and I had poor people sneakers. This is just the same thing, different era.

Also Timbo doesn't know how to feel because he's autistic.

Fuckers should have listened to the wisdom of Mr. T.

Table the label. Be your own brand.

So, it seems that EGS made 680 million in revenue in it's first year. Finding revenue numbers for steam is a little harder, with the best I could find saying it hit around 4.3 billion in 2017

With that said, assuming the standard revenue split, Epic's takeaway from that would be around 75 million. Do we know how much they paid for exclusives?

Well, I believe Pheonix Point got around 110% of what they originally wanted from the kickstarter, Control got around 9.5 mln I believe.

I think you might be misreading revenue. Revenue is the amount of money that passes through the company, also called "turnover", it doesn't account for the significant losses that they're experiencing. If you assume even a careful 500k paid by them on average for every game on EGS store, they're left with less than 80M in potential profit assuming even if they'd pull 30% from all games, which after taxes, advertising, upkeep and everything else means they're extremely deep in the red.

It's practically impossible to calculate their income or loss (not that income on the first year is feasible for most companies), but even using low-balling figures what they're doing isn't viable in the short term, and game devs pretty quickly are learning that there's quite a bit of animosity from their communities for signing exclusives. For those that don't care about the product they put out (Ooblets, for instance) and only care about their paycheck, they will obviously still go for that paycheck, but they will never produce anything worth your time anyway.

Psyonix, shortly after the Epic buyout, is now completely removing Mac and Linux support for Rocket League across all platforms.

Their reasoning behind this is because they'd want to move onto "new technologies" (never mind the fact that this game will still be supported on Windows 7, a defunct Windows OS), and that people who currently owned the game would need to switch to a brand-new OS in order to play it. This is also following off the heels of the previous blueprint scandal that was mandated by Epic in order to maximize profit for the storefront.

Anyone who can no longer access it only has the option to try and refund the game through Psyonix in order to take advantage of Steam's current refund system and make Steam look bad, despite the fact that the people on these OS's don't want a refund, they just want to play the damn game, and even then you're shit outta luck.
The link they supported doesn't take you to the ticketing page, and even if it does, tickets are being auto-closed. Meaning no refunds, period. And even if you were to refund it, you're only getting an estimated number pertaining to how much you paid for the base game, because for some reason, they can't be bothered to check for this info on Steam, nor send the refund through Steam.

It's merely healthy competition.
