New Nerd video:

It's okay, had a couple of chuckle in it. The rant in the end started funny, went stale and became funny again.

It's... Mediocre. Everything felt tired but, since I was unfortunate enough to own this game as a kid, I'm glad he did it.

Chapter closed.

The only other shit games that I played he hasn't covered yet would be Awesome Possum and Toys (based on the Robin Williams movie).

It's pretty funny he finally got around to reviewing it but other than that a pretty typical nu-AVGN episode.

And he missed the obvious Pitbull joke the entire time!

The last AVGN review I really liked was the one on Earthbound from roughly a year ago. Can't really remember his stuff from after that, though it's also been quite some years since I had been a regularly watching him.
I liked his video on Jurassic Park Trespasser, it was cool because he interviewed one of the developers who gave insight on what amounted to a very ambitious failure.

I’ve been a huge AVGN fan since need the beginning. I’ve always loved James’ work. To this day, I’ll queue up one or two of the “seasons” videos in the background as noise when I’m working. I was so much of a fan that I had actually attended one of the premiers for AVGN: The Movie. Unfortunately, this happened to be in one of the cities which he didn’t attend to (I think he stuck to the west coast), but he did allegedly buy 100+ bottles of Rolling Rock, one distributed to each person in attendance who was of legal drinking age. I thought that was a cool touch and the sentiment made the film more tolerable.

As someone who enjoys watching the autism of Internet celebrities, I’ve always admired James for his ability to steer clear of bullshit that could be used to defame him. As many others have stated, he could’ve easily flipped shit in 2016 because he said he wasn’t going to hate-watch Fembusters, but he didn’t. He ignored the criticism mostly entirely. Wow. Maybe he lurks a few threads here and understands that if you ignore it, if can go away.

My favorite Nerd episode is probably Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties. The script, James’ genuine sense of bewilderment, and the weird nature of the “game” itself meshed so well together. I find that episode hard to top, just classic. Of recent memory, I also thoroughly enjoyed Hong Kong 97 for similar reasons, it really seemed like he enjoyed the odd nature of the source material, and was able to flesh out a decent script to compliment it.

If I’m honest, I’ve felt that the Nerd episodes slowly started to disintegrate in quality following the Barbie (The Making Of) episode. Not that the Barbie episode wasn’t good, quite the contrary, it was fascinating to me and I’ve always been interested in James’ recording methods, it’s just that every episode that followed has its “special” formula exposed. Early AVGN was incredibly formulaic, but after that episode, a lot of the magic was lost on me.

I cannot stand 95% percent of the James and Mike Monday’s videos. James sucks at game, whatever, but he’s trying to have fun. It bothers me when Mike does that passive-aggressive coddling thing with him after James finally succeeds in doing something “easy” after numerous attempts. Any of the ROM hack episodes display this behavior. Watch these videos, and then watch the SMB ROM hack videos where Bootsy absolutely wipes the floor with Mike. It’s like Cosmo getting pants by that random dude in that Super Mario Maker stream, such an ego getting crushed, fabulous. Mike couldn’t get along with Bootsy because Bootsy was quite clearly better at gaming. Mike so desperately wants to escape from his ancillary role in Cinemassacre.

Also, I can’t find a source for this, but I recall reading on Reddit some years ago that it was James’ call to distance Bootsy from Cinemassacre because Bootsy was using his own Twitter to sperg about Trump.

My dude, just watch this: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0058A651EB882B48

This is a billion times better.
Yeah but AVGN's video is just 24 minutes, a fraction of the time it takes to watch that old Goon LP. I mean it's basically the difference between a review and a full commentary track.

And again it's cool that Rolfe got Seamus Blackley on for the skits and brief interview, the guy is a legend in the gaming industry.

Episode was honestly ok for me. Not bad but could've been better.

Also in case you all don't know, James Rolfe lent his voice for some Chris Bores video:

I just watched the collab with Gottfried and I. I dunno. Shilling for a credit card really feels like its crossed the line. I was hoping it was a joke, but then I remember Gottfried used to do insurance, not cards.

I'm gonna call it. I like James. If I knew him in real life, we'd probably be friendly. But the AVGN is dead. The era is over. If you weren't there, you won't get it. I think the Tiger episode was the finale way back in 2016. It had all the fixings, it was mostly funny, it had information, and it was on a target that fucking deserved it. But otherwise, that is really it. Guy's just not relevant anymore. Frankly even if you pay attention to the beer bottle it looks like its just filled with water since there's no froth or anything. He sobered up, started a family, bought a house and made a movie. Now he's just another actor.

I dunno why that level of success feels so much like failure when I look at it. I can't thank him enough for the fun I had with his early videos but now its just, damn. The shill part is depressing.

All internet stars sell out at some point.

Lurking the Nostalgia Critic, I see that the new episode is funded by RAID SHADOW LEGENDS...and you just fucking know that Doug has NEVER EVER played RAID SHADOW LEGENDS.

RAID SHADOW LEGENDS

That game is fucked. I know jack shit about it except for the fact that everyone is taking shots at it including even its own shills. Its hit shill critical mass. I can fucking market shit better than these people. AVGN should redeem himself by doing an episode on just the game's marketing.

You do realize that if James published a video criticizing Raid: Shadow Legend, thousands of people would download it just to see how bad it is. People are smart enough to ignore commercials for obviously bad products, but turn the product into a meme and suddenly buying it becomes the hip thing to do.

Shit, what if that was their plan all along?

That's true, though now would be a prime time for him to gather footage, and release a video on it after it shuts down.

Y'all realize that if he does a sponsor reading for a product and then turns around and shits on that product, he's probably never going to get another sponsorship, right? And at this point in his life he can't really afford to be making videos for free.

That honestly made me see Patton Oswalt in a new light. Fuck Dane Cook, he's always been an unfunny hack, but I used to genuinely like Patton. Him being such a spergy sjw faggot without even knowing what the fuck he was talking about made me completely lose interest in his work.

I have mixed feeling about Patton Oswalt. He's a crazy sjw for sure but I remember one time he was fighting someone on twitter. He popped in the guys twitter account I guess to get more ammo and found out that person was terminally ill. He backed off and promoted the duded gofund me page.

I know that's not much but considering how fucked up sjw's are, I think that was really capital of him to do.
