I love the gameplay of Zelda 2 but the cryptic nature of where to go is a turn off.

This became a meme really quick.

Hot take: you can play a game however you want. If you play Doom in a source port with mouselook you're already playing with a massive advantage compared to how we played it back in the day. And I would never go back.

Telling people how they should play is being a cocksucker.

This is why I love the New Blood devs: https://mobile.twitter.com/DaveOshry/status/1210984555722747904

Buy Dusk if you haven't already.

Unironically treating "beating" a 40 year old game on the fucking NES as a point of pride when you're a 40 year old man is one of the cringiest things I can think of. This is like scat fetishists gatekeeping fart fetishists and saying they don't truly love the asshole unless they like to smear poop on themselves.

Come the fuck on.

I beat Castlevania 1 without save states (although I did use them to memorize certain parts) and cheese the fuck out of Death with Holy Water because fuck that boss fight. I still beat the game.

I've noticed Gamergaters are conflating "rewind" functionality with game journalists complaining about difficulty. Yes, a journalist who deducts point from a game because he's too fucking stupid to press "B" while jumping should be shot in the head to preserve the gene pool. No one's arguing that. But you can't tell me Mike didn't use the Konami Code, type in the password that lets you skip to the end of Metroid or Kid Icarus, use a Game Genie or read fucking Nintendo Power when he was a kid. There have always been ways to cheat at games. Rewind is obnoxious, but I'm not going to throw a kid under the bus because he used the rewind function to beat Ninja Gaiden 2 when I (and Mike) would have done the same.

Depends if you really treat it like a giant achievement or just mark it as a neat thing you've done that's connected to your childhood. In the latter case, yes it's childish but several orders of magnitude below modern manchildren.

Actually, I'll double post and give my opinion about the AVGN and his partnership before the year is up. While the videos are definitely more miss than hit (though I really liked Pepsiman for some arcane reason) with some of the worse ones he ever done (looking at you The Immortal and Life of Black Tiger), I like that he is now more informative rather than angry. Also, James trying new ideas is a thing I can respect, as opposed for doing the same angry routine over and over.
Besides AVGN, I really like Rental Reviews. It has a good balance of not being overly cynical but also not shilling, with the guys having good chemistry. I recommend watching/listening to Super Mario Bros. The Movie rental review, it has a lot of interesting tidbits that are kinda genius. Kinda sad for Monster Madness becoming a podcast, but it's still an interesting listen.
Overall, I feel like James Rolfe is one of the very few Youtube first generation that actually made a good life for himself rather than devolve. I hope he keeps up the good work and improve on the AVGN.

Not gonna subject myself to two hours of undiluted Mike Matei, but if I had to make a blind guess it's weed.

Depending on when that clip is from..he apparently played this game for 8 hours straight and from what I saw in a later stream. it is not..a good game.

Imagine Mike being invited to "Guest Grumps", on a live stream or something, and as soon as Mike sees they mainly use emulators
(there are instances where they got caught doing that, can't recall wich ones but they have accidently shown the HUD on both Znes and Kfusion) and walkthroughs verbatim... Mike would spaz out on air and show Arin who is the new king of the "D club" XD

And then Arin would suck him off right then and there as Suzy watches.

Possible unpopular opinion, but I can see where he's coming from. Part of the experience of playing old NES games is the crippling difficulty of a lot of those games; a player who is able to defeat a game on original hardware is clearly playing on a different level than someone using an emulator and cheesing save states or rewinding.

That said, yes, the way he phrases this makes him come off as a bit of an insufferable prick.

No, every gamer get's that, just some of us are old cryptkeepers/soft gamers that's mostly in it for fun. 10 years ago i would beat Psycho Fox, no continues, today i don't have time nor passion. ofcs, i only savestate the beginning of the level.

(For the Master System, think Kid Niki, real awkward floaty jumping! But who can hate on a game with such a title?)

All right, that bit at the beginning made me laugh. Who the hell has a Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever movie poster? There was a case where the licensed video games were far more entertaining and memorable (and profitable, probably) than the actual movie.
