SCIENCE LESSON!
A mask's effectiveness is based on pore size. An average corona virus is 125 nm. To us science people, that is 0.125 microns. (That's small). Surgical masks run the gamut between 5 micron filters and 0.1 micron filters. So if you buy the wrong mask, it kinda doesn't matter.
So for all you Kiwis, the mask if you want 100% protection is an N95 mask. Remember this number. I know all about masks because I used to work with high-grain, lead powder in my research, so I had to wear a respirator. This means it filters out 95% of particles. But this is really only if you're in the 'danger zone'. That and they're fucking expensive, hard to breathe in. What you DO want is an ASTM Level 3 mask. Like if you're in Wuhan, N95 all day e'ryday. But it filters out 98% of shit at 0.1 micron. Whatever you do, just don't buy them in CVS. I mean, if you're really scared, by all means by the N95 masks. I might buy a package or two if shit hits the fan.
The problem is if the Chinese are NOT handing out masks that are rated at least ATSM Level 1, then its not gonna do shit. I'd recommend as follows:
- N95 - I am in China right now oh my god the zombies. Or you're ultra paranoid.
- ATSM Level 3 - I'm worried, but I'm not in a hazard zone
- ATSM Level 2 - I'm worried but I'm not worried enough to spend that money.
- ATSM Level 1 - Just in case, even if I don't use them they aren't that expensive. (95% filtration at micron 0.1)
- CVS Masks - I have no idea what I'm doing lol
Just a reminder, N95 masks are very expensive, uncomftorable and pretty silly if you're not dealing with sick people all day. Which is why I recommend the level 3 ones.
Chinese healthcare works collapsing from it is frightening because they aren't giving them proper PPE.
