A lot of people do business in China. If you are clever and know your way around the market, the country and its people are essentially money pinatas waiting to be cracked open. You might have to give them several good shakes to deal with their... idiosyncrasies, which probably isn't worth the stress for many, but there's some serious dough involved. A family friend told me how one of his associates dropped his programming job to go traveling around the world, then returned back to the mainland to operate his own freelance travel agency. Except, "travel agency" implies what he's doing is official; he does it all through WeChat groups and cash only to avoid pesky things like regulations and taxes, and now he's making more money than he could have ever made from doing code.

Seriously, the amount of money middle-to-upper class Chinese folk are willing to just throw away is nothing to cough at.

I have heard up to 4 suspected cases in the Irvine area, if the CDC is not wrong about the virus not spreading during incubation then that is the only way this doesn’t end in disaster at the campus. The Chinese are spooked and all wearing masks. The confirmed case was a 50 year old from wuhan in the Long Beach area. I have heard no update on his condition.

On a side note, the Chinese have horrible standards of hygiene even on campus. Chinaman roommate of mine was sick for a whole month and refused to see a doctor. Getting me sick with the flu in the process, as well as a cold. By the time I convinced him to see a doctor. The Chinese doctor he saw told he had a cold and that was nothing he could do besides eat less fatty food. He is sick to this day...

i don’t think a corona virus could swap material with a filovirus. Both are RNA viruses but filoviruses are single strand negative sense RNA and coronaviruses are positive sense. I can’t see how recombination or reassignment would work (correct me if I’m wrong!)
However, if Ebola does undergo a mutation which increases the chances of air bourne transmission we are in very deep trouble. The strain which hit the USA (reston strain) was at one point thought to be capable of droplet transmission and as far as I remember they did some experiments to show that monkeys could catch it through very specific scenarios which resulted in droplet contact to mucous membranes.
The most likely mass casualty pandemics IMO are a novel flu, something like this coronavirus but with a higher fatality rate, or if we are being really imaginative, a haemorrhagic plague. There are plenty of epidemiologists and geneticists who think that the Black Death and the plagues mentioned previously may actually have been a haemorrhagic virus like Crimean Congo fever/Ebola. The epidemiology does not fit a rat bourne vector at all.
On the data we have right now this is not a species threatener. That data is certainly incomplete and it may change. If it ends up being contagious during incubation that will be a big deal because it’s going to hit an immunologically naive population that’s basically the whole world. A lot of people will be infected, but perhaps in the west very few will actually die
When that happens you often find the pathogen ‘mellows’ after a while. A good example of this is zika. In africa zika was endemic and most people got it as kids if they were going to. So very few women of childbearing age get it. Once it hit South America and the South Pacific it ripped through a population who had no defense and women of child bearing age were exposed. Give it twenty years and it’ll be an endemic childhood fever with a vaccine, much like rubella, and complications will be rare tragedies.
The best thing this virus can do is shake people up and increase international disease surveillance budgets. Because this may not be so bad, but one day one of these things will be very nasty indeed and we need much better plans and international cooperation to avoid a bad outcome.

There are good places and bad places in both countries. The entire country of China is not the mirror image of some videos you see on LiveLeak. Is it corydalis? I know that's popular for pain and it's one of the only tcm things I tried where I actually felt like it did something. Oyster shell seemed to help with muscle spasms too, I figure there's probably magnesium in it or something.

I'm curious if anyone has ever separated the wheat from the chaff to see if there is some merit to some of the single ingredients. So much of TCM is like "you MUST make the exact formula, in this exact way for it to work" when I suspect if any of it does anything outside of placebo effect it's down to the properties of one single ingredient. I always wonder if it's the esoteric nature that draws people to it though, like "well this seems complicated and specific and magical, there must be something to it!"

Went to Home Depot this morning and had my mother with since she needed to go to the Walmart next door. While I was getting three of the reusable respirators with p100 filters an asian woman came down the row and snagged a chunk of the N95 single use masks from the shelf. While I was eyeballing my mother and grinning the woman whips out her phone, takes a picture of one of the N95 boxes then calls someone and start talking to whoever is on the other end in what I'm guessing is chinese. Then she gets off the phone and takes all the rest of the N95 boxes. She had somewhere between 20 and 30 boxes.

When I get up to the front checkout the lady manning the register asked if I was buying the respirators because of the China thing. I told yes and commented about the lady clearing out the shelf. She told me that last night someone had bought 800 masks and what they had put out this morning was the last stock they had.

Wouldnt doubt its the same for all the Home Depots in the city I live in and we're nowhere near any of the reported cases yet.

People are short-sighted. The time to buy this shit is before there's a problem. If this thing is as infectious as we're lead to believe I choose to believe I'm already rolling around in it and just deal. Yes I will smugly take the comparatively sterile society I live in for granted actually!
