They camp out in hospitals in flu season? Why? Unless you're in a vulnerable population (elderly, sick, immune compromsed) or have developed a major complication, all you can do for normal flu is stay home in bed, rest, take on liquids and OTC meds to maybe ease symptoms like congestion or lower your temp and just ride it out until you feel better. God knows I've been through it enough times myself to know the drill. There's nothing a doctor can give you that you can't buy over the counter in normal flu years. This is how you spread the illness within a vulnerable population like seriously ill people who are in hospital for other stuff.

Also the whole no primary care system just shows China is still a third world country with the flashy, badly-built facade of a developed nation. Whole place is about to collapse like a pack of cards because despite having developed all sorts of creepy spying systems, cornered the market in cheap and shitty manufacturing and counterfeits and stolen every IP on earth they can't look at successful nations and take the slightest bit of advice about how to construct an infrastructure to run a country for the actual health and benefit of the actual population. Who gives a shit about your high speed trains when you can't breathe the fucking air because of the insane and incessant pollution. Who gives a shit how fast you can put up a new building when it'll fall apart in ruins in three years? Who cares about your space ambitions when you're still eating stupid shit like bats and can;t work out how handwashing saves lives? Who gives a fuck your police come equipped with spooky face recognition spy glasses when your elderly are forced into a system designed to basically spread diseases among them because you haven't implimented the most basic form of effective healthcare which is triaging people to the correct services instead of letting them barrage hospitals with the common cold?

It's like the proverbial caveman with a nuke. China has acquired all of these modern amenities, but never went through the growing pains of actually developing any of it for themselves. The higher-ups have no respect for what they have and are quick to abuse any perceived advantage. Just look at how they treat antibiotics.

Sure. I was brought up very close to Eyam so this is something I’ve always been fascinated by. Basically the epidemiology doesn’t match at all with Yersina pestis. Susan scott went through the parish records and painstakingly recreated the spread of the virus and the deaths. You can actually piece together who lived where in these villages, and how thy e virus spread, and it just does not match a bacterial bubonicnolague at all, but it does match a generic haemorrhaging virus.

People have isolated plague bacteria for bodies but frankly you’d expect that. Plague was around, it did flare up and you’d expect some bodies to have it. But it doesn’t act like the Black Death did. Pneumonic plague does not travel or spread like that. For example Iceland was hit, and Iceland had no rats at that point. Person to person transmission was noted - there are loads of folk tales in eyam about lovers needing to stand forty feet away and a stone with indentations in where villagers left money for food in a pool of vinegar. They weren’t stupid - they knew that it spread through contact and was contagious for about forty days .

However it seems to me that more and more people are genuinely being afraid of new disease or waiting for an apocalypse. I'd understand if all of you lived in China and worrying (as they should, tbh), but people panicking in the US? So much confusion.. are people being dead serious or it's a mere irony? or both?

I understand what you mean. When you read about this everyday.. somekind of hysteria is being created. I think the main reason why people are talking feverishly (no pun) about corona is: it's morbidly exciting. Being prepared is half the battle. What if it's a nothing burger? What if it ISN'T tho
When China quarantines in such a draconic style, people outside china def are gonna have a lil' bit of the creeps.

Also, buying masks and sanitizer and canned foods is never in vein. It's a future investment.

Whelp kiwis, I'm still only mildly worried for myself, but my best friend/crush in Germany goes between various doctors offices and hospitals for her work, and they had a confirmed case in the next town over.
So I'm going to buy her a mask. I know p100 but after a quick look on Amazon I realize I have no idea what to actually buy.
If anyone can pm me with some info on what to look for please do.
I'm also broke as all fuck, but I still want to get her something decent quality.

Someone posted a link on twitter from "the independent economist" saying that the was government closing Wuhan's highways (which they totally are). But the rumor also said that it was to cut them out of food so they would have no choice but to wait to die. And that "they (the Chinese government) gave up on Wuhan"

Nah, you're right. This happens every single time, people freak out and then it's a big nothingburger. It's interesting to watch though, and with some people I always get the feeling they'd love an apocalypse to happen with millions dead, for one reason or other, which is uhh... yeah. Nobody even died outside of china yet, everyone outside of china sick with this is in stable to good condition and quite a few people already were released from hospitals as cured with no apparent lasting damage. It's just does not seem to be that fatal. The infection and death numbers will rise, maybe seemingly quite dramatically so, but this is to be expected. To gain perspective - in the US alone, 15 kids were reported last week of having died of influenza - the common flu. Nobody talks about that because it just isn't as exciting as theorycrafting about some odd new virus from china and listening to random social media rumors about bioweapons and people convulsing and puking blood. The truth is that disease is everywhere and people die all the time.

Try to take it easy, maybe talk it out with a friend, and realize that it most likely isn't as bad as it seems, and even if it were, there could be ways to deal with it. Because while I am in-fact, a paranoid nut-job, I would prefer not to power level that out to the public.

You could try applying water repellent to leather gloves and wear rubber ones underneath, but they are much more permeable and might still pick something up.
