Could someone in theory be a reverse Idea Guys and basically hard reboot Chris?
I didn't want to clutter up the news thread, so here's the long version:
A friend of mine was working her way through college and worked briefly for a pre-paid gift card customer service department. Did you know that there is an entire shadow economy in the USA where employers pay their employees with pre-paid gift cards? It's true. Also, they frequently skim off the top, fail to report the payments, etc. It helps if the employees are not citizens, are not very smart, or have such terrible credit that they can't start a checking account.
My point is, there is an entire portion of the American economy that is based on raping people who are down on their luck. Maybe they're illegals, maybe they've made bad financial decisions, maybe they're just stupid. Once someone has fallen into the clutches of this evil system it is very difficult to get out of. People who have fallen into this hole have basically no advocates. Watch the tragicomic attempts to reform payday loans on a state level. The predators just bribe the politicians. Why the fuck isn't MLM illegal? Again...
Chris and Barb aren't
quite in this position. They have been taken advantage of, financially, by predators, but it was weird internet trolls and not white slaver skimmer dedicated predators. But the prognosis is very similar. There aren't many resources or advocates for people like Chris. Who stands up for the poor, stupid, and borderline useless? Nobody. Because nobody cares about those people.
If you were to like, give Chris a Kiwi Farms themed Chick Tract that extolled the virtues of working to get to a better place in life vs. falling further down the hole of distraction and fantasy, he would circle and underline the second choice and crudely scrawl "i choose this" and the dot above the "i" would be a little heart. Or, you know, maybe he would say that he's
already working to better himself, and then he would keep doing the same idiotic shit that makes him vulnerable to these predators.
Unless you can actually materially control Chris' life, sloth and heathen folly will bring all your hopes to naught. I think Marvin has made a strong case that Chris is capable of sound decision making and clear thinking. Maybe even more than half of the time.
However, Chris is not capable of making sound, long term decisions
enough of the time to do anything but keep his head basically above water and continue to exist in disgusting squalor. He was brought up to believe in short-termism (or at least, that is what he took from his upbringing), and he will pick an appealing, short-term escapist fantasy over sensible, hard-nosed Protestant work ethic every single goddamn time unless you were physically there to wrangle him.
