This is actually really bad advice for the record. Updated information says while dealing with depression antidepressants should be a last resort. Lifestyle changes like change of diet, more outdoor activities, developing a better base of coping skills, talk or group therapy, etc. are better long term then starting off with medication. This is because many patients will rely purely on medication and not try further lifestyle changes and the risk of side effects can outweigh the benefits.
This doesn’t apply to things like schizophrenia or bipolar, etc. When it comes to pure depression many people experience situational depression rather then something like majot depressive disorder, which needs about two years of persistent symptoms to be diagnosed. It isn’t that he’s entirely wrong, it’s just a generalized statement with outdated information. Also when it comes to medication it’s generally psychiatric not psychological, so that can explain some of the miscommunication.
