Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I'm only middle aged and I remember the extensive power cuts of '73-74 (just). Mum had us little ones making toast via the gas fire, sitting in the dark, with candles burning for light. I also remember the winter of discontent. One of the (many) reasons I have never voted Labour and never will. I was just a little kid and the politics at the time were beyond me but I recall the rubbish piling up, the anguish at the dead remaining unburied and so on. I also had older relatives in the old mill towns with outdoor toilets still back in the 1970s. Brought up on war stories. It's amazing how you can get by with very little when you absolutely have to. The key is planning and co-operation between people though. People back then relied on each other far more, there was less 'I've got mine, fuck everyone else' mentality among the working classes.
I remember the 'energy crisis', lines at gas pumps, and had parents who lived through the depession (and didn't have electricity until the forties; we recycled religiously) and grandparents who lived through shit like the Spanish flu. People were more cohesive then. It's much different now.

Dont forget to stock up on alchohol for the crippling alcoholic in you. You dont want to be caught without booze after 5 days of doing nothing like that one cruise ship. It's the Florida man way. things with higher alcohol content are good disinfectants for cuts if you're going that far

I personally am just gonna roll overand die, prepping is too hard.

Never a bad time to take up Mead home brewing. Probably my only marketable post apocalyptic skill set I have. Unlike beer is very hard to screw up unless your just careless and even then the common Bret contamination is probably not going to kill you.

Also fuck fruit flys.

SF mayor London Breed declares state of emergency over coronavirus

Amid intensifying worldwide concern about the spread of the new coronavirus, Mayor London Breed declared a state of emergency for San Francisco Tuesday, which will ramp up the city’s efforts to prepare for and confront potential cases.

There have been no confirmed coronavirus cases in San Francisco to date, but “the global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step-up preparedness,” Breed said in a statement.

Three people have been treated at San Francisco hospitals for coronavirus, two of which have been discharged, but to date no cases have originated inside the city.

“We see the virus spreading in new parts of the world every day, and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm.”

Declaring a state of emergency allows San Francisco officials to marshal resources and personnel to accelerate emergency planning measures and to expand capabilities for a rapid response to a potential coronavirus case in the city. Santa Clara County declared a state of emergency a few weeks ago for similar reasons.

City employees, for example, could be redirected from their normal duties to help share critical public health information in multiple languages.

“Given the high volume of travel between San Francisco and mainland China, there is a growing likelihood that we will see cases of (coronavirus) eventually,” said Dr. Tomás Aragón, San Francisco’s health officer. Wuhan, China, is considered to be the epicenter of the outbreak.

There are currently 57 confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S.

Federal officials have imposed strict travel restrictions for people returning from mainland China, including a mandatory two-week quarantine for U.S. citizens returning from Hubei Province.

“We are prioritizing children, people who live in congregate settings (such as single-room occupancy hotels and jails) and vulnerable populations as we plan to reduce the potential for harm from the virus in the community,” Aragón said. “We have been working closely with the Chinese community, who are so impacted by this situation, and also at risk for stigma and discrimination.”

City officials urged schools to begin creating plans for potential closures, and for businesses to consider their work-from-home policies and sick leave to support anyone who needs to self-quarantine.

The emergency declaration also makes it easier for San Francisco to secure emergency state and federal funding and other resources.

The declaration comes on the heels of a troubling update from officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tuesday, who said the United States should begin bracing for the virus to circulate more widely.

“It’s not a question of if, but when, and how many people in this country will have severe illness,” adding that the situation was moving “closer to definition of pandemic.”

The city is also expanding operations at an emergency operations center that opened nearly a month ago amid a proliferation of coronavirus diagnoses across the globe. As part of that effort, the city’s Department of Emergency Management said it planned to organize a “community branch” within the operations center to make it easier for officials to communicate and coordinate with businesses, faith-based organizations and schools.

The city’s health department has also been working with local hospitals to identify isolation rooms that can be used if diagnoses arises. Health care clinics in the city, San Francisco officials said, are also screening patients for their travel histories and screening for symptoms of the respiratory disease.

Chinese authorities weld the entrance shut with people inside.
... CCP knew of this beforehand. Apparently made no preparations. Then when doctors raised a concern they were arrested; one's dead. ...
Or even better one
North Korea successfully combated the virus!
Allegedly, the first verified carrier of coronachan in North Korea is executed.
Take notes governments of the world, this is a quick and easy solution.
Communists will never stop intriguing me.
All that interesting ideas to make people's life harder.
Good thing that ussr do not exist anymore, unfortunately in some cases mentality remained.

Did they specifically declare a State of Emergency FOR Corona-Chan? Or are they simply stating the obvious that San Francisco is default in a Shit Filled State of Emergency? I mean Corona-Chan might actually be the emergency that solves all the other San Fran emergencies.

I seriously hope that come summer I am laughing at my own paranoia and looking for ways to integrate canned fruit and veg into our daily diets.
Yeah, this is why I don't buy anything I wouldn't normally eat. I detest canned veg, and doubt its nutritional value; if I do buy it, I'll never eat it, so I don't. Canned or dried fruit's okay, but I don't eat it very often, so I don't buy much.

That said, learning to identify, forage for, and cook wild greens (aka "weeds") is a good strategy, imo. Dandelion is common almost everywhere, and in the spring the leaves are good if you like stronger-tasting greens. The roots are edible, too. They can get really bitter once summer kicks into high gear, but par-boiling helps.

Plantain, nettles, burdock, and clover are just a few others I can think of where all or part of the plant can be consumed in a variety of ways, and there may be others local to your region. So it's worth looking into.

But yeah, this summer I hope to be able to laugh and say, "Well, at least I won't need to do any major grocery shopping for a while."

I'd highly recommend the movie contagion. This is Disease X ladies and gentlemen. If it doesn't impact you directly it will most certainly impact the supply chain and cause major malfunctions in the production of necessary items which may lead to shortages. The big one is for us burgerlanders if we start getting alot of cases here it will lead to paranoia and panic. All we need is one big outbreak in say NYC or Chicago or LA. People see martial law in those cities they'll freak out start panicing and all hell will break loose. I figure within a month we will have a big fucking problem here. Then that'll be fun. People scared to get sick don't go to work power generation facilities shutdown nuclear facilites shutdown water and waste treatment shutdown communications falter. The makings of a real shit show. Prepare now and expect 6mo your gonna be in some shit. Then hopefully after 6-8 months things start to normalize and some form of control is organized. We shall wait and fucking see.

How bad is it going to get in the US? NYC claims we have no Wuflu cases, I find that hard to believe.

I'm afraid my friend, we're completely fucked. I ride 3 types of public transport every day and I just look at the masses of people. JFK. Penn Station. AMTRAK. An incubation period of 14-24+ days. Asymptomatic spreading. Lives on surfaces for 9 days. Can be transmitted through feces and urine.

It is already here. There's no fucking way its not. To be quite honest, every major metropolitan area should do random population screenings.

Can't tell how many of you are being serious or are losing your goddamn minds.

I use 3 forms of public transport, work in a place with many international people and am very close to multiple airports with vast numbers of travelers from who knows where the fuck. There's not enough hand sanitizer on the planet that will keep me safe. I'm super fucked, there's no prevention for me. Hell, it could be incubating right now and I wouldn't know for 3 weeks.

I mean, I guess I'm prepping? Though part of me feels like its futile.

EDIT:
Just want to thank everyone for the tips. They're all bookmarked, if I'm not already completely fucked.

Fuck it and just crack each other's heads open and feast on the warm goo inside.

I fortunately already posses a good deal of knowledge on foraging including mycology. But I live in the north. We can always hunt year round but foraging isn't really an option when the ground is snow covered. Not to mention that what I am preparing for is isolation so scouring the land would defeat that purpose.

A lady at the checkout asked if I have a really big family. I said, "No. I am preparing for the potential socioeconomic fallout from a global pandemic of wuflu." Everyone looked at me like I was wearing a tinfoil hat. I guess I am in the crazy class now.

It's been a month of governments and the news downplaying the issue while things steadily got worse. Now containment is fucked, the governments are still being stupid, and there's still people going "haha its just the flu, bro."

I don't know if you just don't have skin in the game or what, but those of us with families to think of are going to be more wary than unencumbered people. And like we keep saying: best case scenario we'll just have more food and water we can use instead of grocery shopping for a while.

All this talk of survival and stocking up on food and of fucking course our big freezer had to up and die this past week. Tried fixing it with new parts, but it's not on warranty anymore and we haven't had the time to go freezer-hunting yet.

Fuck. :story:

(We have a food storage, though, but not a lot of meat for the time being.)
