I was wondering something. Is it true that antibacterial hand soap doesn't really help? I've heard that it doesn't work as well as regular soap. Which sucks if it's true because I checked the soap I have and it's antibacterial.

Coronavirus spreading fast outside China but stigma is more dangerous: WHO

MARCH 2, 2020 / 7:07 AM / UPDATED 12 MINUTES AGO

GENEVA/BEIJING (Reuters) - The new coronavirus now appears to be spreading much more rapidly outside China than within but can still be contained, and stigma is more dangerous than the disease itself, the World Health Organization said on Monday.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said almost eight times as many cases had been reported outside China as inside in the previous 24 hours, adding that the risk of coronavirus spreading was now very high at a global level.

He said outbreaks in South Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan were the greatest concern, but that there was evidence that close surveillance was working in South Korea, the worst affected country outside China, and the epidemic could be contained there.

“Stigma, to be honest, is more dangerous than the virus itself. Let’s really underline that. Stigma is the most dangerous enemy,” he told a news briefing in Geneva.

He said the fight against the coronavirus should become a bridge for peace, commending the United States for supporting sending medical aid to Iran despite the tensions between them.

“I think we have a common enemy now,” he said.

The global death toll exceeded 3,000, with the number of dead in Italy jumping by 18 to 52. Latvia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Morocco reported cases for the first time, bringing the total to more than 60 countries with the illness known as COVID-19.

But equity markets surged after their worst plunge since the financial 2008 crisis last week, encouraged by the prospect of government action to stem the economic impact. In the United States, the Dow jumped nearly 1,300 points, or 5%, while the S&P 500 closed 4.6% higher.

Finance ministers of the G7 group of leading industrialized democracies were expected to discuss measures in a conference call on Tuesday, sources told Reuters.

Oil prices jumped 4% amid hopes of a deeper output cut by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

MORE THAN PREDICTED
A senior U.S. official said he was concerned about a likely jump in the number of cases in the United States, which has had more than 90, with six deaths.

“When you have a number of cases that you’ve identified and they’ve been in the community for a while, you’re going to wind up seeing a lot more cases than you would have predicted,” Dr Anthony Fauci, head of the infectious diseases unit at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, told CNN.

South Korea has had 26 deaths and reported another 599 infections on Monday, taking its tally to 4,335.

Of the new cases in South Korea, 377 were from the city of Daegu. That is home to a branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, to which most of South Korea’s cases have been traced after some members visited the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the disease emerged.

The Seoul government asked prosecutors to launch a murder investigation into leaders of the church. Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon said that if founder Lee Man-hee and other heads of the church had cooperated, fatalities could have been prevented.

Lee knelt and apologized to the country, saying that one church member had infected many others and calling the epidemic a “great calamity”. “We did our best but were not able to stop the spread of the virus,” Lee told reporters.

It was not immediately known how many of South Korea’s dead were members of the church.

‘OUTBREAKS ARE CURBED’
But Wuhan itself, at the center of the epidemic, shut the first of 16 specially built hospitals that were hurriedly put up to treat coronavirus cases, the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said.

There was also a steep fall in new cases in Hubei, the province around Wuhan, but China remained on alert for people returning home with the virus from other countries.

The virus broke out in Wuhan late last year and has since infected more than 86,500 people, mostly in China.

Only eight cases were reported in China beyond Hubei on Sunday, the WHO said.

China’s U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun, at a news conference at the United Nations to mark China’s presidency of the Security Council for March, said: “We definitely believe that with the coming of spring we’re not far from the coming of the victory of the final defeat of COVID-19.”

Outside China, there are now more than 8,700 infected and over 125 deaths.

Iran, one of the worst-hit nations, reported infections rising to 1,501, with 66 deaths, including a senior official. With stocks of gloves and other medical supplies running low in pharmacies, authorities uncovered a hoard of supplies including millions of gloves.

In Britain, which has 40 confirmed cases, Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged people to be prepared for a further spread.

ECONOMIC DAMAGE
Factories worldwide took a beating in February from the outbreak, with activity in China shrinking at a record pace, surveys showed, raising the prospect of a coordinated policy response by central banks.

The epidemic has forced the postponement of festivals, exhibitions, trade fairs and sports events and damaged tourism, retail sales and global supply chains, especially in China, the world’s second-largest economy.

An official of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said airlines stood to lose $1.5 billion this year due to the virus and urged governments to help them.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development warned that the outbreak was pitching the world economy into its worst downturn since the global financial crisis, urging governments and central banks to fight back.

History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of man....

Oh no! Corona's got to go!

A silly question no doubt, but I'd rather be sure: shops and drug stores around me are pretty much out of sanitizers and other alcohol-based cosmetic products, but I can still get rubbing alcohol (70%) with an addition of camphor oil.

Lucky you. In the UK shops stopped selling rubbing alcohol to protect society.

I was wondering something. Is it true that antibacterial hand soap doesn't really help? I've heard that it doesn't work as well as regular soap. Which sucks if it's true because I checked the soap I have and it's antibacterial.

Soap is soap. if you wash your hands properly, working the soap between the fingers, making sure you get it over teh backs of your hands too, and washing for a decent time, not just a few seconds before rising, any soap will do the job you need it to do.

The anti-bac thing only really works if you leave it on the hands a minute or two so anyway, and obviously won't deal will viruses, but the point of washing hands is to mechanically remove the dirt, grease, and the germs that stick to them. Not to just kill stuff on impact. You're actually washing the germs down the drain physically along with the excess oils and bits of dirt etc. That's why it's important to really vigorusly rub hands together with soap while washing, and not just daintily dab a bit of soap on and rinse it off.

Hey look, the DOW spiked back up almost 1,300 points--making it the single largest one-day gain since 2009--now that people are starting to chill out about this, again.
Hopefully people take a realistic stance on this and realize that it's not the end of the world, but not something to be taken lightly either. There is actually a massive silver lining to all of this, which is that it makes it really hard for people to argue in favor of overtly parasitic global capitalism.

Just look up how to wash your hands properly - there will be loads of clips online.
Also the public health sites that certify people as food workers. If someone just bought a bunch of stuff but doesn't cook much or have a lot of experience, I'd consider walking through one of the state food handling tests. They don't generally ask for payment for the cert until the end so you can nope out after learning a few things.
I don't think anyone is wondering why when it showed up in Iran, it showed up in Qom, the center of their religious lunacy, first and heaviest.
Seems like "The Mandate of Heaven" is being explored in some interesting ways this flu season. Speaking of, any news on the pope?

A silly question no doubt, but I'd rather be sure: shops and drug stores around me are pretty much out of sanitizers and other alcohol-based cosmetic products, but I can still get rubbing alcohol (70%) with an addition of camphor oil. Would that work in a pinch?

You could slather your hands in vodka and so long as its got a high enough amount of alcohol in it itll make a fucking mess out of the membranes/capsides of whatever's in your skin.

Edit: also here's a guide on how to clean your hands. Yes its by the OMS (WHO in english) but its still good. Only reason its got their seal is bureaucratic bullshit, it was published by emergency services.

at this point if anyone denies that the "globalist elite" exist and/or don't give a fucking shit about you, they should do everyone a favor and open the borders of their body to this new virus. this guy is in charge of a global organization, and he's spewing a bullshit moral bromide which could literally get people killed.

Fauci just gave a bit of a non-answer re: knowing the risk is low given lack of testing

Yeah, I know people are touchy about the "it's just a flu bro!" thing, which is not what I'm trying to say at all, but it's worth considering what it would sound like if we reported on annual flu deaths the way they report on COVID-19 deaths.

During the 2017-18 flu season there were as many as 4,000 Americans dying every week from influenza, but it wasn't reported on in the way Wu flu is, so many people didn't even know how bad the flu was that year. As far as most people knew, nothing out of the ordinary was happening.

It's just something worth putting into perspective, especially when we start getting into the really high number of deaths we're going to inevitably see with this virus.
The flu should be reported on more aggressively, yet another consequence of corporate owned don't disrupt the consumer reporting.

Maybe if people knew how virulent the flu is they'd stop spreading that shit everywhere.

any news on the pope?

The most recent bit seems to be a cancellation of this year's annual Lent retreat.

THE Pope has given up on a Lent tradition this year, as he is struggling to overcome a cold. He will skip a spiritual retreat this week, after falling ill in the middle of last week.

It is the first time in his seven-year papacy that he will miss the Lent retreat, but he plans to follow the prayers from the Vatican. As he sneezed and coughed throughout an address to pilgrims in St Peter’s Square yesterday, Francis, 83, said: “Unfortunately a cold will force me not to take part this year. I will do the spiritual exercises from home.”

The Pope, who had part of a lung removed in his twenties after contracting tuberculosis, has cancelled all appointments since coughing his way through an Ash Wednesday service.

The Vatican has announced he is suffering from no more than a cold.

However, his illness has prompted concern, as it coincides with the rising number of coronavirus cases in Italy.

I had no idea the Pope had gotten part of a lung removed in the past.

I'd thicken it a bit with xantham gum, maybe a quarter teaspoon per cup, possibly less, but you'd have to do some trial and error. You can probably find it in the gluten free or baking section of your grocery store. It's about $8/half pound through Amazon, too. Unless you're doing a lot of strange gluten free baking a half pound is probably a lifetime supply.

A tiny bit turns any liquid into a gel.

Firefighters in Orange County, California are quarantining themselves after they transported a patient over the weekend who may have the Coronavirus.

IRVINE (CBSLA)
– An Orange County Fire Authority crew based in Irvine has self-quarantined after allegedly coming into contact with a possible coronavirus patient.

The agency reported Monday that four personnel from Fire Station No. 20, located at 7050 Corsair, decided to self-quarantine after they transported a patient Saturday night to a local hospital who had recently traveled internationally and showed symptoms similar to COVID-19.

The firefighters quarantined themselves inside the fire station as a precaution. They were all tested and are awaiting results.

The rest of the Engine Company 20 firefighters who were not on the call, including the battalion chief, were moved to another station.

As of Monday morning, the O.C. Health Care Agency had reported only one confirmed case of coronavirus in the county. That patient has fully recovered.

The O.C. Board of Supervisors approved an emergency program Monday morning which calls for more specific training for first responders and medical providers on how to handle coronavirus patients. It will make it easier for the county to call on additional resources from state and federal authorities if there is an outbreak, officials say.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 is spread from person-to-person through close contact, usually within 6 feet, and mainly via respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. People are likely most contagious when they are most symptomatic.

Don’t provide our first responders with masks or nothing, just take entire crews out and quarantine them for 2 weeks. I don’t see anything wrong with that logic!

We’re going to run out of first responders at this rate if the stupidity continues. Why is the CDC not providing guidelines out to emergency operations on how to respond to flu like or respiratory issues calls?

We’re completely unprepared for being a 1st world nation, it’s embarrassing.

Well, if he does have Corona and not just a cold he's pretty much fucked. This is what it does to your lungs.

People shit talk China for the TCM and the filthcooking among the poor, but by and large the sort of measures they've gone to are well beyond what we are prepared to do here in the USA.

Maybe this is the emergency worker version of shooting yourself in the foot to get out of going to war?

When the analytical software kicks in of course you are going to get surges like this. Buy Low sell high. This is why I don't do stock anymore. You can not go up against the companies who have all of the inside trading and software to make those short to mid term choices for smaller choices of picking stock. You have to go long term with a broad portfolio to get ahead in life.

Chill is the wrong term. Vulture Capitalism is the right term on what happened here today.
