I'm actually starting to get extremely worried that the Government is purposely downplaying it like China to keep the markets from immediately tanking. The CDC is just... quiet while, for example, students in Washington State are told to merely self-isolate for only 5 days after someone infected worked/studied there for the last week.

I also really don't like this, "its already here so there is nothing we can do" mentality; Cities that prepared for the Spanish Flu in 1918 fared better than the cities that were caught flatfooted. Merely closing down church, education, and community events while the virus ravages an area can make all the difference for deaths. From where I am looking the government is really giving the strongest impression they want to maximize potential deaths by doing literally nothing to slow the spread or even prepare people for it.

Right now the burden is on the individual to take matters into their own hands by avoiding crowds, gatherings and interacting as little as possible with the public. And stocking up on shelf stable food and otc/prescription medication.

They would have to be masked constantly and fully decontaminate after every contact because they have no idea when they show up just what the issue IS and where the person has been.
It's not being "unprepared" it's you and your hindsight that thinks they aren't doing their jobs correctly.
No one rigs the fuck up for "flu like or respiratory issues calls" because the for the first they had flu shots and for the second (trouble breathing) calls they have no reason to.

For the record. Assuming a respirator of sufficient quality or preferably rebreather is installed properly, and no part of the suit is taken off or opened, or infact accidentaly ripped, and proper procedure is taken to take it off after the act, then it would be safe. Also it would be impossible to have sex in, but hey, details. They'd probably get infected taking it off due to not cleaning their hands properly anyway, if you're gonna fuck you might as well fuck. Over the years the CDC has, as all bureaucracies tend to end up doing, over reached its mandate. Motorcycle helmet laws, TV violence, Gun violence among other things they have no business screwing around in while getting caught flat footed with the Wu Flu and what looks to be a serious problem with the test kit quality.

Its up there with NASA wasting money on Muslim outreach while our astronauts are really just hitchhikers bumming a ride on russian rockets.

All first responders have masks and all EMS units have disposable overlay gear. (Gloves gowns etc) for when you suspect that there is something going on. fitted n95 Respirator Masks for Medical Responders was made OSHA mandatory back around 1990. You don't use it for every call because it is next to impossible to function that way, and the costs of doing so rapidly outpace any possible benefits at an obscene rate. Departments should be being a bit more liberal on use of Masks etc. But they don't always have the resources because they have been effectively looted by everybody else. Just a reminder, last week the idiot Mayor of New York took the City's on hand supply of 1.5 million masks, and handed them out to random hobos. Then complained to the President that he didn't have no more for his responders. This is the sort of thinking that the responders must deal with.

As for Quarantining Responders and Emergency Services? Yeah once again an idiot move. I promise that policy will quickly end, and it will shift to only quarantining those symptomatic or testing positive. Because you can't lock up your responders to that degree without crippling your ability to respond. This is always about Risk Assesment and Allocation of Resources. Not the Media or some elitist bureaucrats concept of best practices. You can't put everybody in a Spacesuit. You can't quarantine the Health Care Providers and Responders simply for contact.

Johnny works night shift, so on his days off, he shitposts IRL at night. So I drove a ways and went to a bigger city.

Last night was a Wal-Mart 24 Hour center run. Stuff was cleaned up but saw a fucking Asian guy steal the hand sanitizer from the cart section. At 1AM.

Stuff gone like hot-dogs, canned Chef BoyRDee, cheap sandwich meat, hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, bottled water, cheap soda, water additives, hydrogen peroxide, shit like that. Overheard 2 phone calls where the person in the store was told "Don't fuck around. Get it, come home, stay safe." Chatted with a Wal-Mart stocker. Said they'd been having a serious run since Friday and this was more than a normal "It's the FIRST OF THE MONTH!" run. Cat food and dog food had been hit. Bags of rice were tanked, so were beans.

Went to another on the way home and found the same thing, just with no pollution goblins lurking around.

Rumors that the nearby military base is going to go lockdown. If that happens then ol' Uncle Johnny will start to worry. Right now you can still get on.

In the West, there are groups that will try and fight responsibility tooth and nail. People like the Oil Companies will argue till they're blue in the face that they're not responsible for environmental damage or climate change. But everybody knows they're just using legal arguments to preserve their businesses. In a way most people accept that. They even expect it. But in China, these kinds of people are genuinely baffled by the concept that they're supposed to be responsible for the wellbeing of the nation, environment, or any other entity larger than themselves. The concept simply does not compute on a fundamental, even biological level. These are the kinds of people that will stay in a sinking ship because somebody higher up the chain told them it was the right thing to do. This isn't even an exaggeration. Asians have drowned in their hundreds by staying aboard sinking vessels because nobody told them to get off. Even as the water rose around their ankles and the doors to the upper decks were clearly open, they let themselves die because it was unthinkable to go against the authority figures that assured them there was no reason to panic and that staying put was the safest thing to do.

The great leap forward and cultural revolution cultivated the most extreme manifestation of FYGM possible. People had to do anything in order to survive. "Anything" in this context means just that. There were too many people and not enough resources, and this environment forced people to bribe, lie, and cheat in order to make it. The good and charitable weren't so fortunate. There are accounts of people mudering their neighbors' female children to eat them, lest they starve to death. The descendents of these people are now the populace of modern China. They inherited these attitudes from their parents and grandparents. The Chinese sense of civility and critical thought was completely destroyed during this time period, and the current government is actively stamping out regrowth. It is fundamentally, absolutely corrupt.

I think thats why I enjoy watching various shows where I see people interact from China. It's so bizarrely alien to me. Like seriously, I was watching a variety show. And they had some priceless collectible on the table to show the TV audience, and the host is watching like a hawk one of the guests to make sure he doesn't pocket the collectible while he's looking at it. And this was on mainstream TV. There's the constant undercurrent of "I gotta watch my ass because no one is gonna watch it for me" even while trying to entertain people.

It's not banned. You can buy it legally and easily online in various quantities. I currently have a 500ml of 70% rubbing alcohol I bought from Amazon UK which I use for cleaning phone and keyboard etc. I've bought the same thing many times before online.

The difficulty is buying it in brick and mortar shops for some reason. Maybe it was to do with alkies trying to abuse it, I don't know what exactly the issue it. You can buy 'surgical spirit' which is basically isopropyl alcohol aka rubbing alcohol with camphor oil and some other shit in stores like Superdrug and Boots and local pharmacy type places fairly easily though.
