Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

If the previous stories of the Coronavirus didn't make people in the US panic buy then this definitely will.

  • Hospitals across the U.S. are unprepared to identify and treat the new coronavirus, which has begun to spread across the country, New York City-based physician and author Dr. Matt McCarthy told CNBC.
  • Federal agencies are increasing coronavirus testing capabilities at state and local labs, U.S. health officials said Friday, and plan to streamline the process for private development of test kits.
  • McCarthy, a staff physician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, says he still does not have access to test kits.

Hospitals across the U.S. are unprepared to identify and treat the new coronavirus, which has begun to spread across the country, New York City-based physician and author Dr. Matt McCarthy said Monday.
"Before I came here this morning, I was in the emergency room seeing patients," he said on CNBC's "Squawk Box." "I still do not have a rapid diagnostic test available to me."
McCarthy pointed to problems identified with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's diagnostic tests for the virus.
The CDC sent test kits earlier in the outbreak to public health labs around the country, but those kits were problematic and potentially inaccurate, CDC officials have since said. Because local clinicians can't depend on the test kits, some have had to ship samples to a laboratory with the ability to run the tests, delaying the process of diagnosis and treatment.
McCarthy, a staff physician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, says he still does not have access to test kits.
"I'm here to tell you, right now, at one of the busiest hospitals in the country, I don't have it at my fingertips," he said. "I still have to make my case, plead to test people. This is not good. We know that there are 88 cases in the United States. There are going to be hundreds by the middle of the week. There's going to be thousands by next week. And this is a testing issue."
The team at New York-Presbyterian Hospital is isolating suspected coronavirus patients and taking proper precautions to prevent the spread, McCarthy said, but "they're hamstrung."
New York state and city officials confirmed the first case in New York City on Sunday.
"In New York state, the person who tested positive is only the 32nd test we've done in this state," he said. "That is a national scandal."
As of Monday morning, there are 86 confirmed cases in the U.S. Two people, both located in Washington state, have died from the virus. On Saturday, health officials said that more than 50 people in a Washington state nursing facility called Life Care are sick and being tested for the virus.
Federal agencies are increasing COVID-19 testing capabilities at state and local labs, U.S. health officials said Friday, and plan to streamline the process for private development of test kits.
In South Korea, health officials have tested more than 100,000 people amid an outbreak that has infected more than 4,000 people in the country and killed 22. The U.S. has tested 472 as of Feb. 29, according to the CDC.
"They're testing 10,000 a day in some countries, and we can't get this off the ground," McCarthy said. "I'm a practitioner on the firing line, and I don't have the tools to properly care for patients today."
The COVID-19 outbreak has infected more than 89,100 as of Monday, and killed at least 3,040 people, mostly in China. In recent weeks, the outbreak has crossed borders and onto five continents. The virus is now present in about 50 countries, according to world health officials, who have warned governments around the world to prepare for an epidemic in their countries.

That'll do it.

I knew we were fucked when that pozzed dude showed up in Everett.

There were babies reported early on, ill mothers who gave birth in quarantine. Maybe backtracking this thread to the early days might shake it out. I recall reading where one died. Children have often been recorded as asymptomatic, but I would wonder if they aren't still getting some damage- ie chinese kid whose family all got it severely and he didn't, but on imaging was shown to have the cobwebbed lungs of coronachan.

Just because you got to walk away doesn't mean you weren't kissed.

It's as blue as Illinois, which means not really once you leave the large exceptional city that dominates the state. You'd be surprised at how reasonable most of us are outside those counties.
It’s incredibly stupid to think this won’t spread to red states or hasn’t already. It started on the west coast thanks to the Chinese roaches that came here from before the travel ban. I will never step foot in china town again after this.

Come talk to me in 2 weeks when cases start popping up in those red states after people who travelled to the west coast return and start showing symptoms.

There have been plague and typhus outbreaks in California in 2019. It’s all very progressive
Bubonic plague in California was a thing in the desert, mountains and high altitude rural areas when I was growing up. Rodents are the main vector but I remember someone got it from his pet cat's fleas. Of course I'm sure with hobos squatting everywhere it's in the cities.

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but China released mortality rates by age group
Not sure if this was confirmed or not but wasn't there a video a couple of pages back that showed the some Chinese dudes packing like 4 kids into a body bag to make it look like one person?

If that wasn't fake news then they are for sure fudging the numbers by saying there are no children fatalities. Those little kids couldn't have been more that 6 years old...

You're quite delusional if you think that China of all places would have better healthcare than any European nation. For the rich and powerful, yes, but for the common chinese? You serious?

When China was building all these glittering cities, railways, roads, etc. , it was assumed that there would be top-notch hospitals/medical systems. That was very quickly shown not to be the case. Not only does the Chinese medical system for the peons suck, but so does at least one major water system. Sorry, can't have a world-class city without a good water system, and can't have a world-class country without a good medical system. And having excellent medical care for the rich and the higher-ups in the CCP and their families doesn't count.

Since this all started, seemingly a million years ago, we've seen God knows how many examples of the utter failure of the Chinese medical system. Seen the body bags. Seen the "death houses". And no matter how hard the CCP tries to spin it, they have fucked up the response to the WuFlu on just about every level. For example, if action was taken in December when it was known the WuFlu would be a problem, perhaps the spread of the virus outside Wuhan might have been slowed down. But NOOOOO......dumb fucks have their "world's largest" potluck, then people by the hundreds of thousands leave town for the Lunar New Year. And what happens when doctors raise legitimate concerns about the WuFlu? They are arrested! Good thinking, CCP! The doctors were subsequently released after admitting they had done something wrong, and one doctor contracted the virus and died. Plenty more to mention.

All this stuff went viral. The CCP can't hide it or wipe it out. Now all the CCP seems to care about is getting their industries back in operation, any way they can. And we were treated to the sight of machinery running, doing nothing, without a worker in sight, in order to use enough electricity to show the CCP the factory is back in operation.

Seriously, you have to work amazingly hard to have fucked things up as badly as the CCP has fucked this up. But we can be grateful for the things we've learned. First, China isn't ten feet tall. They are more of a paper tiger. Great power? I don't think so. Not now, maybe not ever. Second, it has been utter folly to have put so many manufacturing and supply eggs in the Chinese basket. One little, microscopic virus snapped a bunch of supply chains, all by its' lonesome. Gonna see more companies moving out of China. Gonna see companies finding/developing second sources for all critical components/supplies. This cannot be allowed to happen again.

Interesting times for the CCP, not that I give a fuck. African swine flu, avian flu, the intractable mess in Hong Kong, and now the WuFlu.

One of the Washington deaths was from Mid February. Not infected with it then, but died. It has been around for well over two weeks at this point, and we're not seeing the end of the world.

So this is an update of info I have collected directly from 1st hand sources (that I have no reason to doubt) related to the situation in WA. There may be overlap with publicly released info.

School districts in western WA are responding individually as things develop. One district with no current cases (pending or confirmed) is openly excusing any student absences at the moment. 2 others, one of which does have a possible case, are closing for the week for teacher preparedness training. Additionally the closed schools will be sanitized top to bottom during the closure.

Medical and health facilities are all taking their own actions. Some medical facilities have very few staff wearing masks at all while some smaller dental clinics have every individual right down to front desk staff masked and gloved. One large health care facility even put a tent out front of the building entrance to be a sort of triage, evaluating and prepping incoming patients before allowing entrance.

Related to the nursing home event from the weekend, the EMTs that were quarantined represent 25% of the available responders in Kirkland. Contrary to perception of the images published with the initial story, it was not because the team was sent in ill-equipped. The individuals in those photos wearing very little protective gear were not the EMTs that entered the facility. I couldn't get details on why the quarantine happened other than something triggered a protocol.

Regarding panic among the people, all the expected pandemic goods have been gutted from any and all outlets...hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and masks of any type. Also, aisles at many stores normally filled with cheap Chinese housewares and such are already empty. Many Asian restaurants and stores are already taking a hit and some have voluntarily closed for the time being.

As far as I can gather these issues have not yet spread to Eastern WA or ID.

A number of Kiwis have brought up the Seattle homeless problem...and this is what I can provide to that conversation. In a region where many are very angry about the city constantly defending its choices to side with the homeless and against the tax paying citizenry, one would think any actions taken to course correct would be screamed from the mountain tops. But without any real fanfare or public announcement the largest and most toxic of the encampments started being razed about 3 weeks ago...the public land they were built upon now fenced off with "no trespass" signs posted. Small clusters moved to new locations, and some of those were scuttled along again. People have been begging for this to happen for a long time...so why now?
Speculation is that this was done in advance of what at the time might have been seen as a "possible situation" on the horizon.

I should mention that Costco has started swabbing down all carts with alcohol wipes at the entrance because "it's flu season". 25kg bags of rice have been hard to get a hold of, but that's probably because the Chinese fags have been raiding Costco every weekend.
I'm suggesting anyone getting large bags of rice put them the freezer for at 24 hrs or in the the refrigerator for 2 hrs. same for flour, grits, oats, any kind of grains, to kill any weevil eggs that may be inside. Warm/hot weather can cause them to hatch and there goes your food.

Here's how to keep them from infesting your food stores:

So I'm not going to reveal my sources as some of it is semi-public anyway, but...

The NHS is being thrown into a full war footing as we speak.

Retired doctors, nurses and other staff are being given orders to stand to and be prepared to head to positions to help fight a mass outbreak. There may even be a quiet alteration to the law passed that allows people who've recently lost their qualifications (through retirement) may be given a quick refresher course to throw them back into the front line.

Also, while local hospitals are reporting "isolation rooms" to the public they're actually turning over entire wards ready for mass casualties.

They can apparently sidestep telling the public about coronavirus figures thanks to patient-confidentiality, so the figures might be a bit higher than possibly.

EDIT: This is apparently because of how quickly the Italians fucked everything up and they've decided to pull the trigger on the various civil contingency plans early and get ahead of the whole matter rather than wait until it gets like Italy and Iran.

I can confirm that some of this is happening. Was reading a plan for which ward will be used for segregation of cases. For the moment, it was only one ward which is already used for infectious diseases under normal circumstances.
Don't have any info on people being pulled out if retirement so can't confirm that.

Yersina Pestis was most likely introduced to the wilds of CA. during the San Francisco plague of 1900-1904. The wiki sums it up very well:
The San Francisco plague of 1900–1904 was an epidemic of bubonic plague centered on San Francisco's Chinatown. It was the first plague epidemic in the continental United States.[1] The epidemic was recognized by medical authorities in March 1900, but its existence was denied for more than two years by California's Governor Henry Gage. His denial was based on business reasons, to protect the reputations of San Francisco and California and to prevent the loss of revenue due to quarantine.

For the general population I believe they’ll mostly be ok, I’m talking about the boomers out there who many have pre-existing conditions. We have 7 deaths from the nursing home alone and 2 outside...all 40+ with health problems. This is the population I’m concerned with, it’s our parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles as well as those with compromised

What kind of container do you recommend for rice storage? I bought a 25lb bag but I don’t think I can freeze it all at once, I’ll have to do it in batches using a ziploc bag. I can’t find a decent sized container, though, for after.

8th confirmed case in BC (archive). I'm hoping that our favourite exceptional Yaniv catches Corona-chan next.

Seems odd to me that it has been shown that the virus has been circulating in Washington state since January, yet there's only 8 cases in BC next door.
The WHO is full of fools and China shills; ignore them.

Lol. In continuation, apparently.

Woolworths puts a limit on toilet paper purchases
Major supermarket Woolworths has announced it will place a four-per-person purchase limit on toilet paper packs in response to panic buying in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

A spokesman for the company told The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday morning it was applying the quantity limit to ensure customers could still access the products they needed. The four packs per person limit applies in store and online.

"It will help shore up stock levels as suppliers ramp up local production and deliveries in response to higher than usual demand," the spokesman said.

"Our teams are continuing to work hard on restocking stores with long-life food and groceries from our distribution centres. The vast majority of the products in our range remain available for our customers as normal."

"We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused by temporary stock shortages and thank them for their patience."

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison made a rare call to the chief executives of Woolworths and Coles, after community anxiety fuelled reports of panic-buying across the country.
Kimberly-Clark, which manufactures Kleenex toilet paper in Australia, said it had production lines running 24 hours a day at its South Australian factory to address the increased, short-term demand.

More to come
Us Australians are going to have the shiniest arses in the apocalypse, that's for sure.

I guarantee you we have more than 9 cases in BC. Vancouver and Vancouver Island not only has a high Chinese population, but has multiple daily ferries to Seattle and Port Angeles. Not to mention, the CBSA is a joke at these ports when it comes to stopping people from coming into the country.

I feel it's going to show up randomly in nursing home or a reserve one day and will produce the panic the government is so desperate to avoid.
