Because, plain and simple, most of them are fujoshits. They get off on the idea of two dudes fucking, so of course they want all their ships to be representative of their yaoi fetish. They know that men CAN have platonic relationships, it's just that making that the case means they can't cram their fetish into it, so they'd much rather claim that any sort of platonic relationship between two men means they want to bone one-another.

Like @Android raptor mentioned, it wouldn't be a problem if the shippers just admitted they think two dudes fucking is hot in a porn sense but fan communities have this hangup about ships being better if they're canon. So basically because of that you've got these shippers trying to justify their ship by nitpicking the writing because canon is good so it needs to be canon. The hangup isn't even just a gay ship thing, as people who were into Avatar the last airbender will remember with Kataang and Zutara.

Have I got a story for you guys.
League of Legends is not known for having deep lore, deep characters, or deep stories. Still there is some sort of depth to its writing. But most of the time it is straightforward. Like with Garen and Katarina, one of League's most famous couples. They are rivals turned lovers. That is oretty much it.
However, some dude from China refuses to accept this, and thinks Garen should be with Taric, a dude who is extremely flanboyant, but not confirmed to be gay. He makes all sorts of reaches and justifications to make this ship work, despite my earlier comments about League's writing.
But that's not the worst thing. No, the worst thing is he creates multiple alts to reply and argue against the Garen Katarina ship. Sometimes he will actually use a character's name and try to act in character, but of course, only to his weird interpretation.
He has had Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit accounts for this shit. When the ofdicial League of Legends board was still up, he had an account there too. He probably has more in other social media accounts.
If I remember right, the Garen mains subreddit tolerated him at first, but then banned him and his alts when his posts started spamming the subreddit.
I'll come back with pics tomorrow.

Another thing I've noticed is that shippers (SJW/fujoshits, anyway) seem to have a contradictory view about incest. They'll hiss and shriek at it if it involves a hetero incest ship, but then salivate over it if it's gay. I guess incest is okay if it means they can't risk reproducing with each other while also catering to their gay fetishes.
