Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Ironically, a lot of the people in the most at risk groups will still need to go out frequently for essential medical appointments, even if they'd prefer to stay home and isolate themselves.
Agreed. Our oldest housemate has to go to a couple of appointments next week and that is worrying me because sitting in a waiting room is not the ideal place for people with serious conditions right now.
Probably because men are more prone to smoking, drinking and hard life shit, but also are likely to have industrial injuries that impair the lungs. Inhale the wrong thing for too many years, or even after a one-off reaction and it will mess with you later.

I have lung damage from a factory job. They changed solvents and I had a reaction to it. I was out for a month and it was scary because I literally could not breathe at times. I'm a bit nervous. I have scar tissue in these lungs although I kick ass considering my age. It's not males specifically, it's people who have damaged themselves to keep the world of industry running and those are disproportionately, yet not exclusively male. Insert asbestos, concrete dust, gypsum dust, chemical solvents here...

Smoking sounds like a logical explanation, yeah. I've seen something similar in South Korean stats, men making up 37% of all cases but 60% of all fatalities. It's why I'm worried about my father first and foremost, since he's over 60 and smokes quite a lot (but has been gradually cutting down in recent years). Still, he's never been diagnosed with any respiratory issues and is pretty hardy, toughened by long walks and a reasonable amount of physical work, hasn't had a cold or flu in ages despite spending quite a bit of time outside. Still, gotta make sure I don't accidentally bring this crap back home from the city.

I'm kinda puzzled by the situation in Japan. We know that Chinese lie. Do Japanese lie too? I would expect more infections over there, but it doesn't seem to grow as furiously as in Italy.

But seriously though last I read the Japanese are taking this seriously and most people are at home atm.

In case anyone is wondering about Italy, I found (late?) a visualization and a breakdown by region and severity:

I don't really know Italian, but guess the PDF goes as follows: the four yellow columns are active cases: recovered from symptoms, on intensive therapy, quarantined at home, and total. The next two columns are resolved cases: recovered and released for green, dead for red. Then you have the total, and I believe "tamponi" indicates the number of people tested. The differences in positive-to-tested ratios in the first three regions is somewhat striking.
366 mortality with 600 recoveries... that’s like 50% mortality rate in Italy in total. Is their health really that bad?
SARS had quite specific diagnostic criteria and only 27 people in the US were diagnosed with it. Your doctor might have been full of shit there, especially if he didn't refer you to the big public health agencies.

It's not a 50% mortality rate. The total number of confirmed infections is 7375. It's still over 10% though and that's still much higher than it should be in a country with a decent healthcare system.
Mistake on my part. However the recovery to death rate according to the graph is not very encouraging considering the age group mentioned in replies.

I hate to spoil this thread by posting actually useful information, but I think you will find that if you're concerned about toilet paper availability that searching Ebay or whatever the local equivalent is for 'bidet' or 'bum gun'* will offer you some options for easily usable toilet paper alternatives that cost less than a few months worth of toilet paper, while producing cleaner results.

Especially at currently inflated prices.

9:55 a.m. 1,000 cruise ship passengers headed to Travis Air Force base: About 1,000 California residents on board the Grand Princess will be taken to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield for testing after they disembark from the cruise ship, according to an official with the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.

I'm mostly resigned to all of this. I've got nothing. No, the airmen were not informed, including hospital staff.

It's probably because DoD is not being kept in the loop. The point departments for this are DHHS and State. It's probably petty beurocratic dick waving. Both of them are used to the DoD shitting on their authority and now the boot is on the other foot. They probably went to Pence and said "we can use travis AFB" and Pence said "great, do it" and put out a statement.

Some stuff, China, India, Turkey, Africa:
China: Study released which compares clinical outcomes of 'glorious' Traditional Chinese, against 'malicious' Western Medicine. The Study (done by Ruijin Qiu, et al. - 11 other proud members of the CCP) references over a hundred sources and unanimously concludes (well actually it doesn't conclude anything at all, just presents numbers in a table) that TCM is the clear winner. The mortality rate for patients treated by TCM approaches is a 'whooping' 5 times lower, than that of Patients treated with 'Western' Medicine. The only downside to the TCM approach seems to be a longer recovery time, consisting of 28 days, compared to 20 days for western medicine.
India: Guru getting Interviewed on National Television, gave legit good basic advice till he started stating how being a vegetarian increases your chances of successfully weathering the virus immensly... 39 cases currently... no one believes this, lets be honest.
Turk(e)y: YT channels, Twitter accounts claiming how Turks are the master race and immune to the disease. Meanwhile saw a video of a Turkish looking sod getting transferred from a Turkish hospital by full gear ppl with a MICU, could be one of the ppl they recovered from China, tho.
Oh btw.: Turkey developed their own test-kits, claiming those kits require only one third of the time that German, French, ..., tests require to give an accurate reading. This is from mid February and they had a massive amount of orders for them since then 🤔
South Africa, Africa in general:
YT channels, Twitter accounts claiming how... yeah you guessed it, Nigger race, master race. Press briefings, parroting CDC and WHO stuff, claiming they'll soon get some tests from somewhere. Some coofers (notably a cameraman, with some serious coofery) at those Press briefings, lots of officials sweating profusely.
Turkey developed its own Test-kits mid-February: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymEbw-JGT0U
Africa has no test-kits 05.03: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Oo0KqAmsVg
South Africa Press briefing Coof the cameraman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtxCrNqHUYY&t=933s
Exceptional CCP study: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.03.04.20031401v1.full.pdf

Chineses studies, were claiming something similar, the mortality difference in those equaled the difference (amount) in Male and Female cases tho.

The patient is also a doctor, so we're fucked

BuT iT’s JuSt ThE FlU

Apparently it’s someone young with no underlying health conditions either.

Being a doctor doesn't exempt you, we've already seen it makes you more susceptible. Li the doctor who died in china/was the whistleblower was relatively young too iirc. You're likely to be exposed to multiple strains across multiple patients. More if they're active in an area where they know Corona is it's very likely their stress levels are high. 'Healthy' is a relative term, you can assume so and then find our they're not at all because an underlying condition they had was never found until they get sick- like athletes who pass out on the field because of an diagnosed heart issue.

Guy is a doctor in NY, as he's a colleague of the poster whose location is Brooklyn, with a 9 month old child. I'm guessing some of this is that his immunity is down from sleep / stress. New child. Hard profession. Outbreak in New York. Etc.

There's going to be outliers in every group too as unfortunate as it is.

USA Dr are now on twitter trying to get help from other docs and pharmaceutical companies

What concerns me more about this is Doctors having discussions on twitter about what to do / try. You'd think with a global organization for world health they'd take the time to set up a website for all medical professionals to access with what has been tried and what you can try in patients who're at high risk.

This guy is in medicine and like??? He should know mass panic is not a wise thing to inflame. Being young and healthy also doesn't mean the regular flu can't kill you, that's an unwise POV to have- sure it's less likely to kill you but plenty of young people die from the standard flu every year. He's just being a normal human whose afraid because, I assume, a man whose his friend is now sick. It's not just a scary virus they are grappling with and watching as outsiders anymore, it's personal, and it's coloring his view point. Which is fine and expected because when it's someone close to it tends to make the situation more emotionally charged.

It's concerning but we won't know how significant it is until we know the outcomes of the thousands who are currently confirmed to be infected but who have neither died nor recovered yet.

I’ve been wondering this too, why aren’t chinese doctors basically publishing like crazy or talking to other doctors to get the word out about what works and doesn’t work?

What is that faggot Teodoros doing besides press junkets?

I don't mean to sound like a weeaboo, but Japan is a vastly more functional society than China. Japan also has lingering cultural memories of events like the Spanish Flu, which was so impactful that mask-wearing is seen as a habitual thing to do even today, though mostly as a fashion statement. Japanese are also cleaner and more respectful of authority in general. They will actually listen to the warnings and take reasonable precautions, so you should expect to see far lower rates of infection in Japan than in other Asian countries.

Well every chinese doctor worth a damn got replaced by CCP members and went off the radar. So I'm guessing they're all having a big old party to celebrate their recovery! Yeah and Chen is there too, just having a grand old time. I mean, that's why they can't connect to weibo or talk to their loved ones you know, it's, it's totally not because of the CCP or anything.
