Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

The "new" Whitehouse Chief of staff has just been ordered into Quarantine. Now we know why Trump left the stage - he is freaking...the...fuck...out...
Not even close. Just found out why the bond yield is less than 1%.

20% of the US Economy is based on health care. 60% of that figure comes from treatments that are only useful in the last 6 months of your life, like chemo and bypasses.

This virus mostly kills old people. Think about it - this virus just became the Silver Bullet. If we don't save all the Grans, they never get the life preserving treatment that employs so many.

Trump has to get this shit under control right now or a large part of the economy goes away forever and he's never forgiven by grieving loved ones. The options he has suck, he has to pick the least worst and there aren't enough hours in the day to think it over.

Considering the virus is now in Coachella (3 cases) they really should consider cancelling the Coachella concert in April. That concert is always popular, crowded and it's an all day event for a couple of days. Any band or musician that's in the lineup should pull out. It also attracts a lot of celebrities.
There's no point in going to that concert as it's overrated and filled with hipsters.

I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. Aging unfortunately cannot be cured and it might be lean on the old folks for a bit but eventually you'll have a fresh crop.

Went to my local Lidl. No TP or kitchen roll (paper towels as it otherwise known as) to be found. But as previously mentioned, boxes and boxes of tissue. Not sure why as the value boxes of tissues, work great as TP, so that's dumb.
ARGH NO!! STOP STOP STOP!!

Unless it is shit, piss, or TOILET paper do not flush it down. I'm sure other people have already caught you on this (if I know this place at all) but add me in. Your toilet is not some magical miracle trash disposal unit. Quite the contrary, it is a specialized system that can and will completely seize up the moment someone puts the wrong thing down there. And you do not want what is down there to come up here.

Have you ever seen what happens when the municipal sewer backs up through a manhole or out of a floor drain? The shit literally moves because of all the larvae living down there. And yeah... there are other things living in there too. Some things you can see and a whole lot that you cannot see.

And ladies, you absolutely must not flush tampons down the toilet. I don't care how much you hate your vagina and want that stank to fucking go away. Take an extra couple seconds, wrap it up, and toss it in the bin. You know what that thing does inside of you all day; now imagine it inside a cold, rigid pipe that is meant for continuous, uninterrupted flow.

This whole damn situation literally becomes medieval on our asses if the municipal sewers fail. Respect your toilet or it will fucking nuke your civilization.

Good to see Trump realizing that he isn't going to get away without implementing a small fraction of the measures China is taking to successfully deal with the coronavirus issue, at least as far as economic continuity goes.

Still no action on actual quarantines or testing of course.
I hope Xi is at least paying you because if you're going around spewing this horseshit for free you're a sucker.

I agree they're under-reporting but this just butts back to the issue brought up time and again in the thread. It's very likely that large swathes of people are not that sick from it if it's already in the wild and spreading. You can lie about your numbers all you want but you can't easily cover-up massive amounts of death or near-death all over the country, especially when we live in the era of social media to the point some people in America consider their phone an extension of their arm.
It's barely started in the USA, in four weeks there will be more testing and a whole lot more infected. It can maybe mutate into a less virulent form, it might be more deadly or it may just fade away. This is terra incognita right now, thanks to those worthless commie chinks on the other side of the world.

There are no sewage risers in American apartment buildings? Good to know.

The plumbing codes in most American multi residence buildings (at least those built starting in the 70's) mandate a series of traps and backflow valves that mean you can't have another units wastewater coming out your drains or toilet. (The unintentional downside is when something goes wrong in the unit above you it has nowhere to go, bursts a pipe and comes straight down through the ceiling. But at least the plumbing is isolated.). The exact specifics varies by locale. in America Building Codes and Code enforcement is local not Federal. So there will be some variety as to what was put in place when, and what things were grandfathered, etc.

The greater plumbing related risk might be office buildings. While it varies, in most cases the plumbing is only isolated by floor, not individual unit. So Tenant A's shit might find it's way to Tenant B's toilets if they are on the same floor. Although once again that will vary wildly based on local code and type of buildings. Medical Office Buildings have tons of traps and almost complete isolation between offices.

In 4 weeks we will also be into the warmer Spring Weather in much of North America, and we will start to see if some of the theories about this behaving a bit like SARS or a Seasonal Flu are correct, and if it doesn't like the warmer seasons.

Bullshit. China was lying out their ass about infectious rates, and still are, and so in the US.

No country had any incentive to report or even test cases. Driving up the known number of infected or deaths hurts Government confidence, hurts Economic confidence. If they could get away with saying "no one at all in our country is infected" then they would.

So what's the verdict on this for the time being? Still thinking it's like a very bad flu year, other than people dying to Cornoa-chan from outside factors like pollution and pre-existing illnesses.

I'm wondering about that as well. California is already getting high humidity. We'll see if anything changes from it.

LIVE TRUMP BRIEFING ON CORONA
Holy shit are they going to suspend payroll taxes? Trump is shook. The people around him are all shook. Everyone is nodding along trying to reassure themselves. And outside of that room I haven't seen Xi Jinping in a month? Putin looks like he's aged a year. Kim Jong Un has started firing missiles again to distract. The Ayatollah's friends are dropping dead around him.

The "strong men" of the world may be disregarded or discredited, sometimes with good reason. But the personality type that rises to that level of power in such circumstances does not lightly show signs of worry or concern. And behaving conciliatory should be enough to give anyone pause.

The partisan crap ended with that speech today. I don't doubt that Trump will falter and sling mud, that is his hamartia. But any other politician that manipulates this situation for their own agenda is fucking dead to me after today.

Whoop I am dumb
If you're willing to learn, you are never ever going to be dumb.

Dr. Campbell put out a video on the importance of having enough Vitamin D. I'm sure Vitamin D was covered in the thread already, but I like having some information to back up the advice.

For reference, this is the research he's citing: https://www.bmj.com/content/356/bmj.i6583

  • Vitamin D plays a vital role in healthy immune function.
  • Major dietary sources: fatty fish, dairy products, egg yolks, some assorted fortified foods like cereals (check nutrition labels), even beef liver if that's your thing.
  • Darker skin puts you at greater risk for Vitamin D deficiency, especially living at higher latitudes. WE. WUZ. DEFICIENT.
  • Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased severity of viral infections.
  • Supplementation is easy, has no associated health risks, and greatly reduces the risk of contracting respiratory tract infections - largest benefit was seen in those going from "deficient" status to getting adequate Vitamin D.

IIRC, its two weekends now of days. Yeah, probably not good to have that many people when the virus in its in own house. People come from around the world to Coachella.

Though if they do, cancel the festival there will probably be people salty about it since they would lose money on tickets, gas money, air travel, hotel and house rental (for people who don't wanna stay on site). Also, people camp there during the fest. Its the most common sleeping arrangement. Not good for the containment of this virus.
